In Laws own our house but won't spend money on it.

It's an endless source of frustration! In laws bought our house before we met as OH was struggling financially and they are well off.
They charge us rent which is slightly below the going rate but refuse to spend any money on it.
It's a fucking nightmare as I cannot divide loyalties with OH and now we are too old and with a less than perfect credit history to buy the damn thing.
It needs a new kitchen but aibu to not pay for it ourselves as we do not own it. To top it off in laws are having a new designer kitchen put in their house which they won't shut up about.
I am so annoyed at living like this!

Op come back and tell us what your thoughts are and what your husband thinks.

£700 pm is a perfectly normal rent in much of the country. It's £1400 a month for a titchy house that's not normal.

Surely what is normal depends on the area, in much of the SE higher prices are sadly normal, for now (we live in hope!). Round here 1,400 is more likely to be a titchy flat and 1900 up for a titchy house. It's madness, but it seems to pass for normal.

Don’t ever count on inheritance. So much can happen.

Move out. Give notice though so as not to cause any problems. Do tell them that you’re looking for something updated and you can understand that they’re not looking to do that to the house,so you’ll be moving out to avoid any conflict

Save up your rent deposit first.

£600-£700 in rent a month is a lot of money. It may be not where some posters live. However it is where I live.

£600 is pretty cheap if you’re London or SE. I used to pay more than that for a bedroom in a London house share and we now pay £1,000 for a pretty small 1 bedroom flat in SE London
