AIBU or is my neighbour?

I live on a new build estate where the houses back onto a shared car park. Each house either has a garage and a designated parking space or 2 designated spaces with no garage. I have a garage and one space.

The car park also has a visitor space. In the last few months I've been using this visitor space whenever it's free as my partner has moved in with me and now uses my space (his vehicle is too big to fit in the visitor car port). If the visitor space is being used I use one of my neighbours spare spaces they don't use. This was suggested by them and I'm very grateful however I don't want to take liberties so use the visitor space as much as possible.

There are 8 other houses that share this car park and no one is bothered about me using this space apart from one neighbour. We have had issues in the past which means he is being petty and regularly takes the visitor space if it's free. He has 2 cars, one in the garage and one he keeps on his space. He doesn't need the visitors but does it to wind me up.

As an example I went out earlier for an hour and he jumped straight into the space. When I then went out again he had moved back to his space and luckily I got it back but it made me laugh how petty he was to take it.

AIBU to take it when 7 other households are not bothered and only one is?

toomanyplants - sorry forgot to add my partner keeps his motorbike in the garage so can't fit my car in too.

Well it's a visitors space, for visitors, no a permanent resident space. As above poster, why can't you use your garage?

Using the visitor space on the regular like that is a total no no.

It's bang out of order.

You need to rethink.

Can you pay the neighbour a small fee to 'have' their space?

I used to live in a place with this and people nabbing the visitor space for themselves is a dick move.

Not aware of any covenants about parking there. I think if there were the neighbour with a problem would have pointed it out!

I don't feel comfortable using my neighbours space all the time. For example if my petty neighbour uses the visitor space and I use my neighbours spare space it means if they have a visitor they have nowhere to park which is obviously not right.

No, a visitors space is for people drooping by. Friends, family, decorators, carers etc.

Taking it for you is a dick move.

I can see you won't be agreeing with that.

In my old flats a strongly worded letter from the management company would be coming your way.

He's being petty but you're being unreasonable. You don't have 3 spaces. Accept it. Could the motorbike be out of the garage and not taking up a space as it's smaller? Keep it in the garden?

Sorry I think you need to use your garage, park on the street or pay to use a neighbours space.

My parents live in an area like this, one of their neighbours always uses the visitors spot so whenever I visit (pre lockdown) I have to park on the road, no easy with 2 under 3. When he isn't there and I get the parking space he blocks me in, also blocking someone else's garage in the process because he claims its his space even though its got a huge V in it.

nancy - that's what I think too. I have no issue with people who are visitors using the space of course. My issue is with my neighbour taking it purely to cause me a problem. If he had a visitor it would be different.

He may be petty, but assuming you are entitled to use the only designated visitors space whenever you want because your household has three vehicles, is massively unreasonable.

How often does your Bf use the bike? Could he keep it at a friend/relatives so you can use your garage? You are essentially taking up 3 spaces when you're only actually entitled to 2.

Your partner is being unreasonable in taking both the spaces that come with the property then expecting you to park in the visitor's space. The visitor's space is for any other resident that has visitor's, at any time of day or night. Your partner needs to find a new home for one of his vehicles or find out if any of your neighbours would be happy to rent you their space. I'd be complaining to the factor if a resident was using the visitor's space as a third parking space.

I'm not keen on the motorbike in the garden as the small is fairly small anyway and I love lounging out in it. I think a motorbike would sort of kill the vibe iycwim.

I have taken comments on board. It's just frustrating when nobody else apart from one has an issue. If everyone felt the same I'd feel different.

The visitors space is for visitors...it is incredibly entitled of you and your neighbour to park in it - thereby depriving all of your neighbours of the visitors space.

You either need to park on the road or only own as many vehicles as you have space for.
