Hut tub dilemma

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

As someone who has a neighbour with a new hot tub just on the other side of the fence of my tiny garden, I know the annoying humming sound it makes in the evening. My neighbours are noisy during the day, and the only peace I used to get to sit outside, was at night. Now I don't get that either. Luckily I'm moving soon.

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 27/06/2020 00:46

It probably is quite an annoying noise, but I would imagine it's within the realms of what is reasonable. Check with the council what noise level is acceptable and measure the sound.

I think when you have neighbours it's give and take. You smell stinky smoke coming from their garden, they hear a hot tub hum... it is unfortunately the price we pay for living on top of each other. If you are sensitive to these sorts of things then the solution is to move somewhere with plenty of space between you and your neighbours so you aren't bothering each other. The problem is that most people can't afford to do that, so you get these kind of situations cropping up.

I would turn the hot tub off after you have finished using it at night, so it at least isn't disturbing their sleep, and try and keep relations friendly. Enjoy using it in the evenings. The world will not end just because your neighbour can hear a humming noise for a couple of of hours in the evening.

No.
No.
No.
No.

So can I criticise your poor environmental decisions, since I am not a hypocrite according to you?

You are not solely responsible for climate change, but there is no doubt that your carbon and resource footprint was already higher than your fair share (like almost all westerners, not including me) and you have significantly added to it (never mind the extra embodied energy, and the noise pollution) by buying this item.

Anon0998 · 27/06/2020 00:47

You can't make noise past that times and remember weekends the time is reduced. If I were you use it how you wish to between 9-9 and otherwise switch it off. Next time however politely remind your neighbour about the illegal activities and noise breeches of those living around you and that they haven't seemed to complain about that yet.

Cross posted with y ou on a while bunch of points. I am typing with one hand and holding a child.with the other, sorry!

NellieandRufus · 27/06/2020 00:47

Our neighbours on both side have hot tubs, The smell of weed would bother me more than the low level noise they generate.

notangelinajolie · 27/06/2020 00:50

Tell them you will switch off the humming if they stop the drugs.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/06/2020 00:51

"We will happily turn off the hot tub if you can please find somewhere else to smoke your weed as it has been bothering us for a long time now. Or we can agree to both do as we have been doing so far, and tolerate the small annoyances to keep good neighbourly relations"

Starksforthewin · 27/06/2020 00:51

I’d hate to live next door to you, OP.

The hot tub would be the last straw. Why on earth do you have an outdoor bar in your garden? Is it a long way to carry a drink from your Kitchen?

Two wrongs don’t make a right. By all means complain about their weed smoking, but be aware noisy neighbours can seriously affect people’s mental health.

People trying to treat small suburban gardens as “outdoor rooms” is an absolute scourge of our times.

BrummyMum1 · 27/06/2020 00:52

I don’t think they’re jealous of your house, I think they’re just fed up with your hot tub.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:56

@Starksforthewin
We are not noisy we rarely have visitors as even pre Covid me and DH arnt big socialisers unless going out to actually pubs , the bar is for our enjoyment only although we might have the odd family BBQ we are not the cast of shameless FFS we have a 1 year old and are in bed by 11pm most nights lol

@Starksforthewin our garden is for our whole family to enjoy and comprises of not only the items mentioned but also swing , slide for my daughter, all her outdoor toys including her bike and play tunnels
Why shouldn't we enjoy our garden , my daughter loves being outside and So she should be to her her vitamin D also
Should we all just stay in and be a miserable as you sound ? And yes the garden is an extension of the house and is used accordingly

My neighbour has an inflatable germ tub right next to our fence just at our french doors, the noise is really annoying, so we moved our bbq right up next to where they have it. In the summer we bbq most nights.

RainbowMum11 · 27/06/2020 01:00

I imagine my DD bouncing on the trampoline or other neighbours intermittently mowing grass or cutting hedges would be far more disruptive.
You get used to a gentle low hum, people generally tune it out.

sicknote26 · 27/06/2020 01:02

Mine only makes a noise when the filter needs changing

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 01:02

@redyoyo

No, you're an average western woman. Globally, others suffer for that averageness. It is not about me being superior - I am only doing the absolute minimum expected, i.e. not stealing from others.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 01:08

@rosiejaune
I'm not going to burden the world problems,.its far to big a burden to carry
I do my bit , i donate to charity where I can and would help anybody out , I dont really get your point to be honest

Redyoyo · 27/06/2020 01:09

They haven't said it bothers them but i wouldn't want to be sitting in a hot tub less than 1 metre away from a smoking bbq. I was hoping they would move it over a bit but no joy.

murasaki · 27/06/2020 01:15

Hot tubs are a bit, er, nouveau, aren;t they, I would not like to live next to you.

MrsEricBana · 27/06/2020 01:16

murasaki · 27/06/2020 01:18
