Hut tub dilemma

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

I also think having a hot tub in your garden is distasteful.

It would be different if you had some sort of enclosed space in the garden, with doors so that the sound was minimal. Also would need to be the £5000 version and not the cheap inflatable version.

What do you do with it when it rains?

You owe courtesy to your next door neighbours who are having to tolerate it. If you like it that much, go to a spa.

Lottery winnings dreams ; a separate indoor pool with sauna and hot tub.
Miles from neighbours and no one to see me in my costume!
Will never happen but I can but dream.

If no-one can see, why bother with a costume? I wouldn't!

The hot tub noise wouldn't bother me.
The car wouldn't bother me
The car in the garden wouldn't bother me

The music playing absolutely would bother me.

I suspect your neighbours are totally fed up of you. There needs to be some consideration for them.

Babyroobs · 27/06/2020 12:29

We have neighbours two doors away from us who have one and yes the humming was noticeable and used to drive me mad before we swapped rooms with my dd. Doesn't bother her but then she's a teenager who sleeps deeply !

Beautiful3 · 27/06/2020 12:31

My neighbours had one. It definitely hummed and smelled of chlorine. Was annoying. I'm glad it broke down, twice. They longer have it.

Zeusthemoose · 27/06/2020 12:39

The snobbery is hilarious. Those of you making a point to differentiate yourselves from those with awful inflatable hot tubs as if your somehow superior because you can afford the permanent solid ones are just ridiculous. People can use their gardens for whatever they like as long as you don't do that whatever too early or too late and show consideration. I personally think 11pm is too late to have the jets on.

I lived next door to a family that had kids out 24/7 screaming in a trampoline. I could never have 5 mins peace to enjoy the birds etc. I would have preferred a hot tub tbh but the point is I would have been unreasonable to expect them to be quiet because everyone has a right to use their gardens they wish within reasonable times.

Suzie6789 · 27/06/2020 13:00

SayakaMurata
Is anyone else getting hot tub adverts now?

Yes! I quite fancy one now 😁

Ellisandra · 27/06/2020 13:01

I agree @Zeusthemoose !
If people don’t like them - that’s their business.
If people feel snobby about them - that’s shitty, but we all have things we think are nice and not nice.
But to think an inflatable is somehow worse than a permanent? I’d be ashamed of myself to be snobby based on price. Dicks.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 27/06/2020 13:12

£70 a month to run a jazzed up paddling pool? I'm shocked they are that expensive.

Itwasntme1 · 27/06/2020 13:40

I think the snobbery started when the claims of jealousy were made.

But to focus on the question in hand. The neighbours can hear the hot tub, they are irritated by it. You are irritated by them.

A gesture of good will might make for better neighbour Relations.

Apologise for the nuisance. Say you can’t stop using it entirely but you are doing x, y and z to reduce the noise.

Once you have these measures in place, call round and tell them the smell of weed is annoying to you and ask if they wouldn’t mind trying to reduce the nuisance.

Glitterb · 27/06/2020 13:54

Sorry OP but they do hum and you can hear it, and it would drive me demented.
My next door neighbour hired one for the weekend and I was just about ready to go round and pop it.

mornington444 · 27/06/2020 13:57

Agree an earlier time that 11pm for not using it.

I think they would be an idiot to complain, as if they have weed in the house then how they obtained it would have broken Covid 19 restrictions, even if it was legal.

comingintomyown · 27/06/2020 14:05

Fortunately neither of my immediate neighbours are likely to be purchasing a hot tub.I think the problem is we all have a different tolerance for noise and if you are someone sensitive to noise then a constant hum would be horrendous day in day out.
You ask if you are being unreasonable in wanting to enjoy your garden but that’s not the issue is it what you are wanting to enjoy is your hot tub and if the neighbour has said it’s intrusive then to them it’s intrusive whether or not you feel it is.
Once your DH has boxed it in I would pop over and tell them to show you are trying to reduce the noise and go from there. Mentioning the weed would be petty and tit for tat although if they don’t do it at the end of the garden then you could ask them if they could ?

LakieLady · 27/06/2020 14:12

I lived next door to a family that had kids out 24/7 screaming in a trampoline

Sounds like my SIL, @Zeusthemoose. If they also had a "garden room" built for the kids to game in, while shouting their heads off, I'll be almost convinced it's my SIL.

comingintomyown · 27/06/2020 14:21

Two doors down have a trampoline and the children on it used to spend ages screaming, literally screaming like witnessing a murder, as they were using it. I would have been outside yanking my DC back inside after a few seconds of it but these days it seems to be perfectly ok.
Thankfully they have outgrown it now and I can enjoy the hiatus before the inevitable teen crap

SciFiScream · 27/06/2020 14:23

I would LOVE a hot tub in my garden. One of my favourite holiday treats is when we get a holiday cottage with a hot tub. (Water is changed between residents and checked daily)
I've never noticed a smell or a hum from those but they are the sturdy permanent ones with insulated sides and lids.

We did look into it but decided that the extra £30 a month it would cost in electricity, plus the chemicals needed plus the purchase was out of our price range.

We considered a wood burning hot tub but not ideal either.

So I worked out what it was I loved so much about the hut tub. I love sitting in deep hot water...alone!!!! I don't really like the bubbles. I find them too noisy.

So I'm saving up to have a Japanese deep bathing tub put in my house. I'll probably be able to afford it just around the time I'll be unable to climb in and out of it! GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

If you want to keep yours have a structure built around it to insulate both noise and heat.

Backbackandforth · 27/06/2020 14:29

If you want to stay on good terms with them OP then a compromise is needed all round.

No one - well mostly no one Grin - expects their neighbours to live in silence, but a constant humming would send me mad. Neighbours splashing around 3/4 nights a week with music on would send me mad. Low volume phone music is tinny and irritating -almost more so than if it was audible.

What about one day during the week until 9pm and then a Friday/Saturday until 11pm? They’d be hard pushed to say that wasn’t reasonable.

Switch it off overnight too it’s not fair for them to have to listen to that 24/7. If you boot it up a few hours before use or on the day before use (depending on how good it is at heating up) you keep them happy and save yourself £££ too.

I’m assuming if it’s blow up it’ll be put out the way come September/October? Gently remind them of this too when you’re proposing your compromise. For them to know there’s an end-date to this and not their life forevermore will help a lot.

SayakaMurata · 27/06/2020 14:59

PPs accusing people if snobbery, the OP herself is a crashing snob who thinks that people are out to get her because they are so jealous of her range rover and hot tub. It's hilarious!

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 27/06/2020 16:13

Switch it off at night but fine otherwise.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 27/06/2020 16:24

To be honest I think there will be some sort of noise coming from all neighbours, might be kids playing, dogs barking, TV or music, DIY noise or in your case the hot tub. People who can't live with some sort of general noise from neighbours should live rurally!

Yesterdayforgotten · 27/06/2020 16:29

'we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after'

How loud is the noise? If you're checking with the council I'd think it must be making a right racket. Also after 8pm you shouldn't be making unsociable noise on a week night where your neighbours cam hear it. People are putting their babies to bed or having early nights themselves for work.

Yesterdayforgotten · 27/06/2020 16:30

I think some noise is to.be expected but not noise pollution and there is a difference.

whattheactualfuckery · 27/06/2020 16:52

I've rtft and have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I bought a Vegas too during lockdown, so have a few friends. I wouldn't say I or them are chavs. I use it daily for an hour or 2 for hydro therapy and 2 as a plunge pool on hot days. It's heaven, though I will get rid at the end of summer or when gyms & spas are open again
