Hut tub dilemma

Cuntycovid · 26/06/2020 23:57

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?
Neighbour came.round fairly angry knocking on door

A low level background hum like that would drive me demented, I'd be planning ways to sabotage the bloody thing.

FourPlasticRings · 27/06/2020 00:18

Urgh, hot tubs. My neighbours have one- bloody menace. The novelty does, thankfully, seem to have worn off for them a bit now. And they do have the good sense to turn it off when not in use.

HeddaGarbled · 27/06/2020 00:18

DH thinks its jealousy as our house is much nicer than theirs 😃

neddle · 27/06/2020 00:19

Does it really need to be on all the time?
I’ve never used one, but don’t you just turn it on when you want to use it?

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:19

@Namechanged127865
Thanks for your helpful suggestions hubby just said he is gonna look into it as we do care how the neighbours feel we are not horrid people who want to make others miserable as other posters on here seem to think , problem we have is the only position for the tub is next to our fence which is also the neighbours fence , I'm thinking we might turn it off at night and keep lid on for the heat

FourPlasticRings · 27/06/2020 00:20

Using yours up to 11pm is quite late though even if allowed.

Totally agree.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:20

@HeddaGarbled I'm not trying to sound a cunt but honestly I think there is an element of this

FourPlasticRings · 27/06/2020 00:21

If you're keeping it heated all the time, isn't that terrible for the environment?

Pipandmum · 27/06/2020 00:21

They must hear it if they've complained about it. I have a pool and when the heater goes on you can hear a hum. I put a screen around it and grew a vine over it which has helped. No one has complained, but I can hear it myself. I tend to turn ot off at night and ambient noise generally disguises it during the day.

LoafingLiz · 27/06/2020 00:22

I wouldn't have the jets on until 11pm even if the council says it's ok.

We've all got our windows open because of the heat, that noise would do my head in.

As for the weed smell, I'd have raised that with them already. It fuckin stinks.

WhatWouldDominicDo · 27/06/2020 00:23

If you're keeping it heated all the time, isn't that terrible for the environment?

And you're going to have an enormous electricity bill.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:23

@Sceptre86
Thanks for your comments I agree 11pm is late and we definitely wouldnt use it until this time in the week due to ours jobs as we both get up early x

This happened here. Our neighbor has one and the people beside her kept complaining about the humming sound. We were asked and we cannot hear anything at all. I have very sensitive ears and am often driven mad by those mouse repellent things no one else hears. They even brought in other people to listen.

In that case I definitely think they just don't like the hot tub full stop as ten other people can't hear anything. Have you asked others if they can hear it?

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:25

@FourPlasticRings
Do you drive a car ? Terrible for the environment
Fly ?
Use hairspray ?
Eat meat?

All terrible for the environment

@BarbedBloom they are our only neighbours we are the end house they are next one in

HoneysuckIejasmine · 27/06/2020 00:27

Is it a rigid one or one of those inflatables?

We have a rigid one. I know one of our neighbours (#2) can hear it although they've never complained, just one passive aggressive comment, and we never turn the jets on at night (beyond about 8pm).

I did have a small giggle when the third neighbour got an inflatable one though - now those are noisy, all the time. Jets are very loud indeed. They've taken it down now.

Must point out - ours is as far from neighbouring houses as it is possible to be i.e. at least 20m, if not more. The inflatable one of neighbour #3 was put up against fence under neighbour 2s bedroom window.

FourPlasticRings · 27/06/2020 00:28

*Do you drive a car ? Terrible for the environment

All terrible for the environment*

Daft argument, OP. Just because you aren't willing to eschew everything that's not great for the environment doesn't mean you should go out of your way to put nails in the coffin to save 30 minutes of waiting to use an outdoor bath thrice a week.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:28

@WhatWouldDominicDo
Electric bill has gone up 70 quid a month but as it's a new build our bill was only 30 a month to start with as the house retains heat so well and even in winter we rarely have the heating on
We do have larger electric bill you are correct but we get alot of enjoyment from the tub and have DD1 so we
cant go out much anyway so that's our treat

@HoneysuckIejasmine
It's the inflatable lazy spa Vegas version

Notcontent · 27/06/2020 00:31

There is no law that says you can make noise until 11pm - that’s a myth and the council person who told you that is wrong. 11 pm is often used as a guide - e.g. many leases say that there should be no noise coming from your flat after 11pm. But otherwise it’s really a matter of common sense.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:32

@FourPlasticRings
My point being that daily life in bad for the environment just look at how the environment has recovered during lockdown and natural wildlife
I am not going to carry that burden sorry me and my hot tub are not responsible for global warming

OP posts:
Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:34

@Notcontent I actually obtained this in writing from the council cant post as that would be outing but I was told that they would only deal with a noise complaint outside the hours of 7am and 11pm , these were the words of my local council

Caplin · 27/06/2020 00:38

Our neighbours had a hot tub, the noise was fecking annoying as it was opposite our living room at night. Luckily they moved.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 27/06/2020 00:39

Ah i see. They are noisier and they also lose heat more quickly so they will fire up more often to maintain temp. Ours hadn't ticked over at all for a few days now as it's been so warm.

However, I can't abide the smell of weed. Whatever the cool kids of MN say, it's vile and it's causing MH problems in young men in particular, as well as fueling crime and exploitation. So for that reason, I'd do fuck all about your hot tub.

Cuntycovid · 27/06/2020 00:42

@HoneysuckIejasmine
The weed thing is a nightmare to be honest and we have DD1 whom when she gets older might start asking what the smell is , if never brought this up with them as dont want conflict but hubby thinks it's the perfect time to mention it as he thinks if they can raise issues so can we
