Hut tub dilemma

As did half the country we decided to get a hot tub during lockdown , its causing no end of problems with the neighours though

We have lived in the same new build home for a while , friends with the neighbours no problems whatsoever and generally get on well. Dont socialise together but always pleasant exchanges so no problems , we turn a blind eye to some antisocial behaviour on their part. mainly smoking weed in their garden that blows into ours because on the whole they are good people , no loud parties or noise from theirs ect

They seem however to have taken exception to our hot tub as they dont like what they call a loud humming sound that they can hear , we are at a loss what to do about this as we canny move the hottub anywhere else in the garden , we have a large decking for garden furniture /bbq and a home made bar that take up the other spaces in the garden , my husband has spent a considerable time putting electric cables in the garden so repositioning this would be out of the question, we are mindful not to put the jets on after 11pm (checked with local council and this is the time that noise wouldnt be acceptable after) we also spent a fair whack on a set up so we would not consider not using this
Any suggestions other than moving house ?
AiBU for wanting to enjoy my garden ?

Gosh, I've been desperate to get a hot tub!!! Im not worried about posters going on about environmental stuff as I never fly so can justify it Grin

TabbyMumz · 28/06/2020 08:49

My neighbour was in hers with a girlfriend for most of last night, talking and laughing. It's under my bedroom window so we had to shut window, but could still hear her. Reckon they got out at midnight. I hate her.

CherryPavlova · 28/06/2020 08:57

We like our hot tub. It doesn’t make much noise at all.

What would really upset me, if I had closely located neighbours would be a party garden with a bar, music and a sense of entitlement that as long as it was quiet enough after 11pm, it was OK.

A garden bar suggest frequent, raucous, parties. Most people just fill an ice bucket or two with a few bottles of wine once in a while. That is probably the unpleasant bit.

Can’t imagine Sunday with no hot tub now! Coffee and papers in there this morning lovely

chateaudekaleidoscope · 28/06/2020 09:32

If you live within close proximity to your neighbours and use it regularly until late they are a bad idea. Having a constant noise all the time especially at night is not fair on any neighbour. General garden noise during the day has to be accepted but on a night surely things should quieten down.

makingmammaries · 28/06/2020 13:14

OP, get rid of some of the unnecessary stuff from your tiny sounding garden and move the hot tub to the opposite fence.

Problem solved.

At least 2 PPs have asked about the size of your garden and you haven’t wanted to tell us.

People who insist on having all the trappings while living in a tiny space where they are breathing down their neighbours’ necks are BVU. We moved house to get away from a fancy pants swimming pool set right on the boundary. The screaming and splashing was driving me beserk. No jealousy involved, though, come to mention it, they also had a fancy car.

MorganKitten · 28/06/2020 13:33

You get used to a gentle low hum, people generally tune it out.

Unless like me you have Hyperacusis and that noise cuts right through you

Cherrysoup · 28/06/2020 13:42

Fml, every time a hot tub is mentioned some pp haul out the old cliché of sex pond. I wouldn’t dream of having sex in it, it would need immediate emptying and scrubbing! Jesus, get a new line.

God knows what type of hot tub people have that makes constant noise, ours is silent. I have to open it to ensure it’s on. The only time it makes a noise is the self cleaning cycle for 5 minutes.

transformandriseup · 28/06/2020 14:12

We have an inflatable hot tub which does have a very low hum but we have made it a lot quieter but putting foam underneath it. We also only have it on at weekends so the noise isn't constant.

Also I think it depends on how close you are from your neighbours. We are detached from ours but I think it we were in a mid terrace property it would be more of a problem.

Snowdown24 · 28/06/2020 14:29

No one expects their neighbours to live in silence, if you want that you need to purchase a detached house with land, if you can’t afford that luxury then that’s part of being poor- this is what my neighbors said to me after I discovered that having a house party in our terrace row once a month isn’t normal and moaned.

I tried to argue the point...but thought maybe it was valid, does not having money mean you have to live with others and therefore some noise?

We will be buying a detached house in 5 years, was going to be in 2 years but Covid happened Sad

£70 a month for a hot tub is just silly, insulate the sides and lid with the foil bubble wrap from hardware stores OP.

11pm is maybe a bit late to have the jets on. It may not be against council rules but it doesn't mean it's ok. If I start at 7.00am then I'm often in bed by 10pm and I sleep with my window open as the fresh air helps me to drift off. I'd say 9.30pm would be the latest to have those on. However it seems to be when they are in the garden that it's annoying them. I would as someone else has said, try and build something around the pump unit to muffle the noise.

RachelGreen45 · 28/06/2020 14:54

Fuck it OP nothing can be done, tell them you don’t much like getting big waffs of weed while your tryna relax in your tub! Sounds a bit like jealousy could play a part. My neighbours have one and I don’t hear it, it makes a humming noise that can be heard in the garden but with quiet music it doesn’t bother me.

bridgetreilly · 28/06/2020 14:58

3/4 nights a week with the jets on until 11pm is incredibly selfish and rude. Until 9pm okay, with occasional later use, fine. And no, the heater doesn't need to be switched on all day every day.

Dominicgoings · 28/06/2020 14:59

‘God knows what type of hot tub people have that makes constant noise’

The cheap, mass produced badly made type that have been churned out en masse to meet the hot tub obsession
?

bridgetreilly · 28/06/2020 15:00

does not having money mean you have to live with others and therefore some noise?

Yes, of course. The question is how much noise is reasonable and fair. The OP seems to have decided that so long as they aren't at the limits of getting an ASBO, that's fair. Others disagree.

BikerWife · 28/06/2020 15:04

Insulate your hot tub. Our routine is: Turn heater and filter off at 10pm, put it back on and check chemicals when getting up next morning. Definitely no jets after 9.30pm! It's back up to temperature before lunch.

We can't hear ours from house usually (detached, decent size garden) but on still nights with window wide open DD reckoned she could hear it humming whilst laid in her bed so we turn it off now.
