Actually, I KNOW I am, but it really annoys me that my mum pronounces the name Rachel, 'Racial'

glutton-free".

lolol

fireflyfairy2 · 25/09/2007 15:09

2 of my sisters are TA's for children who have learning difficulties. They have lots of disagreements about the word "Statemented"

One just says 'statemented' & claims she is correct, yet the other says "STATEmented" with the emphasis on the STATE part

Can't see the problem myself, but then it's not a word I use every day.... they have actually seperately complained to me about the other's use of the word!

UnquietDad · 25/09/2007 15:19

While I'm here, that Omega 3 advert over there --->

It ought to be "without THEIR suspecting a thing."

pagwatch · 25/09/2007 15:23

I fell in love with a woman in Waitrose who asked very loudly, in best Queenie accent, for
Tar - mar - slar- tar !

thats what I always call it now ( and always very loudly )

minouminou · 25/09/2007 15:24

oooohhhhh...dp says "sack-sumas" and "kershew" nuts, as well as "mandareens"
it drives me quite insane - he picked it up from his mother - the pair of them are horrendously dyslexic, but it still makes me want to rap him over the knuckles with a ruler
another bugbear is when people say things like "breakfastses" rather than breakfasts

kittylouise · 25/09/2007 15:27

An ex bf used to need lumbar support because of his bad back, but pronounced it slumber support. One of the myriad things he did that annoyed me.

magaddict · 25/09/2007 15:28

my dp once went into KFC and ordered a COL-ON-EL burger (cringe)

mytwopenceworth · 25/09/2007 15:31

pagwatch, can you translate that for me, please?

fireflyfairy2 · 25/09/2007 15:34

pagwatch.. what was it she was looking for?

mytwopenceworth · 25/09/2007 15:34

Is there an echo in here?

Lorayn · 25/09/2007 15:35

colonel, as it 'kernel', like colonel sanders, from KFC

glammama · 25/09/2007 15:37

taramoslata (sp?) I believe. Cod roe pate.

Flamesparrow · 25/09/2007 15:38

"archeries" for arteries

Oh, and bloody "proNOUNCiation" - it is proNUNciation. Tis how it is written, it is the word for saying things correctly and yet it is the one that is said wrongly most often

(sorry, get a touch riled with that one)

pagwatch · 25/09/2007 15:38

sorry - yep taramasalate, next to the humus !

glammama · 25/09/2007 15:40

My lovely dyslexic mate asked poor youth working in Homebase for a Dildo rail instead of a dado rail.

Lorayn · 25/09/2007 15:40

oops, i translated the wrong one, wondered why people didnt understand col-on-el burger

Flamesparrow · 25/09/2007 15:40

My big thing is with ginger cake.

My mum always called it jammica (said fast) ginger cake - I've forgotten why, there was some story about it, probably someone she knew said it. But now, I can't see it as "Jamaica Ginger Cake" it is always jammica I must sound insane if I actually say it in public.

cheeset · 25/09/2007 15:41

Uberalice, my mum also says sangwiches, she pronounces Smith as Smit, she's Irish so allowed those.

Also says 'She don't like it' instead of she doesn't or does not, bless! Mumisms!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 25/09/2007 15:42

My mum wanted to call me Marie but as my dad was a scouser he pronounced it Maarri (like in Andrew Marr)which set her teeth on edge - quite glad as I prefer the name I was given.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/09/2007 15:42

better than tarama salata pronounciation....makes me for some unknown reason......

She also pronounces celeriac as cele-ree-ack.

There was a group of blokes running through town recently, wearing just thongs, to raise money for charity. I heard a woman going on about the runners wearing those throngs. She said it so many times, it had to be more than a one off slip of the tongue.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/09/2007 15:44

oh god there are so many....I do try and correct but she gets really upset....

marthamoo · 25/09/2007 15:46

My Dad says margarine with a hard g .

And I overheard an old lady in M&S once, "oh I don't like this Pruner [Per Una] stuff." I always call it Pruner now
