Actually, I KNOW I am, but it really annoys me that my mum pronounces the name Rachel, 'Racial'

I know {blush} I'm in a rush at work. Should check more carefully next time. Or not bunk off work laughing at these threads on mumsnet.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 25/09/2007 15:52

GoodGollyMissMolly · 25/09/2007 15:53

harpsichordcarrier · 25/09/2007 15:55

my dad used to say cosmestic. It made me murderous.

Greensleeves · 25/09/2007 15:57

my mother used to say "thee-etter" instead of theatre, and "meee-grain" instead of "my-grain" for migraine

WaynettaVonSlob · 25/09/2007 15:59

Mine pronounces e-v-e-r-y syllable of vegetable, so it sounds "veg-et-a-ble"

And tis-sue instead of tishue

but I do love her, honest!

Anna8888 · 25/09/2007 16:02

croissants

Anna8888 · 25/09/2007 16:03

mee-graine - nothing wrong with that, since migraine is a French word originally and is pronounced mee-graine

blousy · 25/09/2007 16:03

I have a friend who prounounces Eleanor 'Elean-OR' and Charlotte
'Charl- OTT' iyswim, drives me nuts for some reason. Also another friend says 'joovet' for duvet and 'AD-vocado pear'!!

Flamesparrow · 25/09/2007 16:07

Croissants is one that I grew up being told crozzants, so it has stuck. I feel like a ponce when I say it right.

Jenkeywoo · 25/09/2007 16:12

there was a woman at work who used to go on the internet to look at 'websides'.

I have a bug-bear and it chorizo - all those tv chefs called it 'shor-it-zo' when it should be said a la spanish - 'sho-ree-tho' .

Sad really I spose.

Jenkeywoo · 25/09/2007 16:14

Ooh ooh, I forgot my dear old grandad who is 86 refers to lasagne as 'la-zanj' and baguette as a 'bag-ooo-ett'.

My dh's aunty was a real mrs Bucket and she used to call towels 'tahls'

UnquietDad · 25/09/2007 16:16

My ILs have pasta issues too. They refer to penne as "penn".

Mercy · 25/09/2007 16:24

My step-grandfather once bought a new car which he said was a "Poogay".

Peugeot to the rest of us.

alittlebitshy · 25/09/2007 16:33

i had a friend who called tiramisu - tira meee soo.

or is that right and i'm wrong ?

Jackstini · 25/09/2007 16:35

My Dad calls those cars Pew-zho - does my head in!

Jenkeywoo · 25/09/2007 16:36

lol at pasta 'issues'. My mil has vegetable issues, calling an aubergine an 'orb-ah-geen'

binkleandflip · 25/09/2007 16:39

MIL:

Ciabatta pronounced See-a-batta
Foccacia pronounced Fok-a-k-a
Quesadiila pronounced Kwizzy-della!

Sparkletastic · 25/09/2007 16:40

ILs refer to keybobs (kebabs) and Ocaydo (Ocado) - clearly have 'y' issues

TnOgu · 25/09/2007 16:44

My mother pronounces, Volvo, as Vulva.

NoBiggy · 25/09/2007 16:51

My mum has pen pasta. I told my sister she'd had pen for lunch, she looked puzzled and said isn't that a swan?

ILs all like a bit of sallid.

Carotte · 25/09/2007 16:54

I had a friend who used to say Sam-mich.

She would say it to her children and I thought perhaps they pronounced it like that and she just repeated it to them, but then she asked me if I wanted a Sam-mich when we had lunch on our own.

I just said yes, please.

TnOgu · 25/09/2007 16:58

My granny used to always ask if you wanted a hang sanwich

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 25/09/2007 17:06

xMIL calls breakfast "brakfast" and so xH until I had a nervous breakdown over it and he stopped!

She also called velour "valorie" (tee hee) and terraced houses "terrance" houses.
