Close friend ended friendship due to 'difference in morals'

Unpopularopinion1 · 21/06/2020 19:57

Name changed. I'm really hurt by what's happened, and I'm struggling with being told my opinions, which I've never thought are anything too uncommon, are that 'disgusting' (her words) that she cannot continue the friendship. We had a disagreement about a certain subject, which led to her blocking me. A few days later she unblocked me and attacked me with all these messages about different topics, asking me outright what I think as some sort of test, before concluding my answers weren't good enough for her high standards.

AIBU for thinking two close friends, of decades, should be able to have different opinions without cutting ties? I'm not sure I have any choice but to let it go. I'm just angry.

OP she sounds a right nasty piece of work. Sharing your tweets and then bitching about you next to them.

She is not a friend. Try not to be too sad.

FWIW I agree with you about JKR - I am also not going to be reduced to a person than menstruates....

Good luck OP and try not to let her upset you

I'd consider it a lucky escape to be honest. Although it certainly would hurt, I would wish I had ditched her first for her offensive views.

Your friend sounds like she's fallen into the zealot zone.

Chloemol · 21/06/2020 20:26

I think you just need to be grateful she has shown her true colours and let it go. Unfollow her on any social media , block her and be the bigger person and move on.

From what you have said she’s coming across as an intolerant bully, and someone you don’t need in your life

EmpressoftheMundane · 21/06/2020 20:26

I agree with you OP. I am sorry your friend has turned out to be so intolerant. Thirty years ago, tolerance was considered a virtue, now everyone is very sure of themselves and feels and sees it as their moral duty to be rigid and intolerant.

I fear this new Puritanism won't end well. Open debate, curiosity about other points of view, sincerely trying to understand people who see it differently makes society so much better.

Maybe you have outgrown this friend. It happens.

Regardless of where you both stand on the JKR issue, the rest of her behaviour (including the public-shaming) is totally out of proportion and verging on crazy Confused

Your friend sounds narrow minded, intolerant and slightly deranged. If I were you I couldn't be rid of her fast enough.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/06/2020 20:28

Your social circle must be vanishingly small in that case.

Quite, given that apparently here it just means "doesn't think JK Rowling was transphobic".

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 21/06/2020 20:28

I don't think it's about a difference in morals. It's actually about freedom of speech and not confusing social media posts with activism or campaigning - her confusion not your's. Pasting BLM over social media doesn't signify anything other than you have posted BLM over social media.

MsTSwift · 21/06/2020 20:29

She sounds none too bright. Good riddance!

calmcoolandcollected · 21/06/2020 20:29

Why would you want to be friends with someone who is so intolerant? Good riddance, I say.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/06/2020 20:29

The term for it is "slacktivism".

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 21/06/2020 20:29

She sounds like a nightmare, best off without her.

I've had lots of conversation with my husband recently about the TWAW debate, and even though we have slightly differing opinions we are able to discuss them rationally and decide where are viewpoints merge, where they differ and have a reasonable conversation about it.

Milicentbystander72 · 21/06/2020 20:29

Op my Bruce are all in their 20's, and even though one is a Lesbian they all feel very out if step with the Twittersphere.

I'm old, but have taken s huge step back from Twitter. I widened my reading matter and found there's plenty of people out there who don't think like Twitter. The majority in fact.

It's why the general election was such a shock to the left. They got sucked into thinking Twitter was real. People like Owen Jones were already celebrating,

I keep very quiet about my thoughts.

Milicentbystander72 · 21/06/2020 20:30

Bruce = neices.

Warpdrive · 21/06/2020 20:31

Your moral standard is holding opinions privately and not allowing any difference of opinion to stand in the way of the relationship. Her standard is to judge you for those differences, condemn you and expel you from her life.

So yes, on that basis alone it is inevitable the friendship cannot continue. Note, because of her not you.

Unpopularopinion1 · 21/06/2020 20:31

Yes she's fallen out with me for it but I didn't know what TWAW was. It's not a subject I've ever particularly looked into, but I'm on twitter and I see a lot of the things people say. I wouldn't ever say trans women aren't women, my argument is that I am a women and don't want that erased. If you genuinely feel you are in the wrong body, and you are an adult and are in the mental state to make that decision than by all means, come out as trans (apologies if that terminology is wrong) but I do consider that the exception not the rule and I believe gender/sex is real and I am a women. I don't think trans women aren't women. Is this a common phrase? Is this why she thinks I'm transphobic?

I think you are well shot of your unpleasant, vitriolic “friend”, OP. She sounds intolerant and incapable of constructive dialogue.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/06/2020 20:31

I'm getting sick of people making statements about trans rights without engaging critical thought, I bet if the majority were siding with JKR then she would be too.

The majority of people do agree with her. Just the people on social media who shout the loudest don't.

Theterrible42s · 21/06/2020 20:32

She sounds like a self-righteous, virtue-signallimg arse. A lot of people use these issues as an excuse to vent some pent-up aggression and feel good about themselves while doing it. You're better off without that shit in your life OP.

romdowa · 21/06/2020 20:32

It sounds like she has done you a favour tbh 🤷‍♀️ you cant have a difference of opinion with people like that sadly. They just try to dominate anyone who disagrees with aggression and abuse.
Well done for not backing down to her bs
