AIBU to think my friend can make £2k in a month?

This is unrelated to my other freelancing thread :)
My friend needs to make 2k in July due to unforeseen circumstances, won't go into details and not a begging thread.
I think as a one off, if she thinks about it now she could pull it off. She doesn't have kids so has lots of time (her words not mine!) and doesn't need to actually be paid for it in July, ideally in August.

I think she could do a combination of:
ebay/facebook marketplace selling
Making and selling face masks (she has a sewing machine and is very clever at stitching so would be easy for her)
Online surveys/e-moderation
Social media moderating
Transcribing

I wondered if Mumsnet thought it was possible and whether you've all got any other creative ideas? :)
Thank you in advance!

That seems quite an ambitious target.

Maybe she could take in ironing.

FriedasCarLoad · 19/06/2020 18:04

She'd do best getting a job - even a temporary minimum wage job for 35 hours a week will earn her money more quickly than crafting/surveys/eBay etc.

And she'd still have time to sell things, make masks, and do online work on the side.

ButteryPuffin · 19/06/2020 18:06

That's a lot to earn through those methods in that time. She'd be better looking at loans or jobs.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2020 18:09

Are you having a laugh? You can't make £2k doing those things for a month. Especially if you aren't already established as a transcriber/craftsperson.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2020 18:10

Reverse thread?

Lampan · 19/06/2020 18:11

I think it would be a push. Especially at the moment as lots people are branching out into these sorts of ways to make money - more people than ever are trying and there are probably fewer people than normal spending. As pp suggest maybe temp work with her other ideas as a sideline.
Can she make curtains? People who can see curtains are usually in demand in normal times... not sure about now but might be worth considering?

Lampan · 19/06/2020 18:11

*sew curtains

ShinyMe · 19/06/2020 18:11

Making facemasks? HAHaha. I'm a competent sewer and the most I've managed to make was 8 in a day. With a simpler pattern, maybe i could manage a dozen. But no way would you be able to make a substantial profit after paying costs. People don't want to pay a reasonable amount for homemade items.

QueenCT · 19/06/2020 18:12

Not as much about but matched betting if she has some money to start with

HollowTalk · 19/06/2020 18:13

Ironing? Loads of people are broke and loads of people aren't going out to work.

winterisstillcoming · 19/06/2020 18:13

Definitely get her on eBay if she has stuff worth selling. It's £1 max but I think her first month will be a limited number.

PurpleDaisies · 19/06/2020 18:14

You’ve obvious never seen this type of thread before hollow. Wink

PurBal · 19/06/2020 18:16

This is addition to eating and rent? Unlikely I think...

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 19/06/2020 18:17

Transcribing pays quite well if you work through an agency and lots are taking on new people at the moment which is why I suggested it - she's a very fast typer so would be able to turn it around quite quickly. Just an idea!
Of course it would be a challenge but I'm trying to be optimistic for her!

OP posts:
NC4Now · 19/06/2020 18:18

Does she already do all those things? Because starting from scratch, then no. Not likely!

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 19/06/2020 18:19

And I know it's ambitious, I need to make 1k a month freelancing and it's going to be a struggle but that's every month, I was thinking as a one off with lots of time to put into it, it could be doable

OP posts:
NC4Now · 19/06/2020 18:19

But how much transcription work will she get as a newcomer? Doesn’t it all get handed to the established transcribers first and you have to build it up?

Browzingss · 19/06/2020 18:20

Doable if she had an actual job to bring in the majority of it

arethereanyleftatall · 19/06/2020 18:21

Ordinary I'd say that's fairly easy. Dog walking is a big earner for example. But, right now, no one needs anyone to do these kind of jobs. Many are stuck at home with nothing to do themselves, so cleaners, making masks, dog walkers, ironing etc aren't really in demand right now.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2020 18:21

If she hasn't done transcribing before it takes time to get up to speed though, so she probably won't make as much as she'd like.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2020 18:22

Matched betting isn't a bad idea mind.

Toomanysofttoys · 19/06/2020 18:22

Two thousand in profit ? Unless she sells a lot of old vintage things on ebay.. record collections etc... she would need a job too. I cant see it happening myself.

Appuskidu · 19/06/2020 18:22

I would say that if she’s never done those things before, the chances of making £2000 in a month is almost nil.

£200 maybe.

PinkiOcelot · 19/06/2020 18:22

Medical transcription paid 8p a line when I last did it a few years ago.
I think it’s quite ambitious and no, not really achievable by the things you mentioned.

backseatcookers · 19/06/2020 18:24

If she needs it in July she needs to bring in the work, do it and get paid for it in six week.

If she doesn't have established clients and good to go projects for things like transcription and social media moderating she isn't going to make the figures you are suggesting.

Does she already do those things? There is huge competition for them...

You sound like a lovely friend but if you don't have experience of getting that kind of freelance money in that time frame without established clients then by saying this is definitely doable you're setting her up to fail rather than doing anything positive.
