AIBU to think my friend can make £2k in a month?

This is unrelated to my other freelancing thread :)
My friend needs to make 2k in July due to unforeseen circumstances, won't go into details and not a begging thread.
I think as a one off, if she thinks about it now she could pull it off. She doesn't have kids so has lots of time (her words not mine!) and doesn't need to actually be paid for it in July, ideally in August.

I think she could do a combination of:
ebay/facebook marketplace selling
Making and selling face masks (she has a sewing machine and is very clever at stitching so would be easy for her)
Online surveys/e-moderation
Social media moderating
Transcribing

I wondered if Mumsnet thought it was possible and whether you've all got any other creative ideas? :)
Thank you in advance!

I know someone who has made over 4K selling masks since March...it's possible!!

Is that 'made' as in turnover or profit though? Such a big difference. I sound boring but as a business owner - turnover is vanity, profit is sanity!

JaniceWebster · 19/06/2020 19:38

that's around £70 a day, it's very possible but I wouldn't waste too much time with things earning pennies.

A cleaner at £12 an hour (standard rate here) can easily earn that.

rayoflightboy · 19/06/2020 19:40

I suppose if shes serious, theres always the oldest profession

Kay1341 · 19/06/2020 19:40

I used to get £1 per minute of tape transcribed. Transcribing an hour of tape with the help of a pedal took me about 4hrs so ny hourly rate was about £15. At that rate, you'd have to work 134 hours to earn £2000 and that's before tax and NI.

There are a lot of ways YOU could make extra money. There are several listed here for you to try.

Try the one you feel you are best at or try a few and good luck.

nowaitaminute · 19/06/2020 19:44

@backseatcookers yes made.... she had lots of materials already and I think some elastic and then she bought more as time went on.

Matched betting/ casino offers. There’s an easy £2k in sign up offers if you have the bank for it. I made more than that in my first month doing it but I started off with £1k so could make money faster ( you need a lot of cash in your exchange accounts for laying off bets).
It’s easy money if you have the time and a full set if accounts, I think I had maybe 70 bookie accounts to start with.

I make about £30 a day and I’ve lost quite a few lucrative accounts such as Sky and Paddy power.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 19/06/2020 19:48

@Alsohuman - I find that rather hard to believe... Hmm have you got a link to that employer? Thanking you in advance.

Carolbaskinstiger · 19/06/2020 19:52

It’s ambitious. I’m a full time “freelancer” (well sort of) and this month I’ve barely scraped £2.5k (usually it’s at least double that). I spend £500 on advertising have a website that ranks at the top of google for what I do, and charge T least £50 hour. There’s not a lot of work our there right now sadly.

3rdNamechange · 19/06/2020 19:52

Local hospital bank HCA , more for weekends and nights. BR tax though if she's already working.

sergeilavrov · 19/06/2020 19:52

Right now, academics in my field are doing so many survey experiments via MTurk because we know everyone is at home. My experiments take about 15 minutes and it’s $2 payment. If she has special characteristics, she will earn more. For example, veterans, ethnic minorities, different nationality (I am desperately seeking Saudi nationals for example) get $6 for the same experiment.

TooTiredTodayOk · 19/06/2020 19:55

I think if she can't be bothered to source even ideas for herself and she letting you do it for her then it's unlikely that she'll be motivated to do anything at all for herself

This.

Yes, it's possible to make 2k in a month, I've done it, but in my case it involved an outlay of about £600 to then make the 2k profit.

Merryoldgoat · 19/06/2020 19:55

I’m having this 👍🏽

Floraflower3 · 19/06/2020 19:56

It's definitely possible with face masks if you get the right market.

My friend started a face mask business (her and her mum make the masks at home with help from another family member). In a month and a half of trading they have made a minimum of 9k turnover (cheapest mask 9 pounds, over 1000 sales). I don't think their costs are high as they work from home.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/06/2020 20:00

You clearly don’t have the first clue about business if you think this is doable immediately. Suggest you mind your own business

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:01

Take in ironing? She'd have to be ironing for the queen to earn £2k. And why is 'take in ironing' the de facto fall back? I doubt anyone will want an ironing service right now.

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:02

Ah, sorry @PurpleDaisies - I should have known Wink

So 1000 masks in 6 weeks- £9 a mask/ 3 people= £3 a mask = £3000/person in 6 weeks which is £2000/person turnover in 4 weeks. So well below £2000 profit for one person a month.

BIWI · 19/06/2020 20:05

Re transcribing - in the market research world a lot/most is being done via Zoom right now, and (with the right platform) they are automatically transcribed, so cutting out the need for a human being.

Not only immediate, but also free - so work for human transcribers is likely to be less and less.

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 19/06/2020 20:07

I made £1k selling on Marketplace but it took me 6 months and emptied my house of 4 years of DC stuff. £2k in a month and still have clothes to wear and chairs to sit on would be tough.

MrsWombat · 19/06/2020 20:08

I've guessed you've seen the £10 a day thread on Money Matters which is where you've got some of your ideas from.

It may well be possible if your friend has got lots of her own stuff she can sell? However, I've dabbled in matched betting and it will take more than a month to make that amount, and I've been doing social media evaluation, social media moderation and transcripting for a while now and it's all £10 an hour, takes a long time to get on the good projects and you would get July's money at the end of August as it's all paid NET30. If she's really lucky, she could get £2000 extra over 2-3 months?

goingtotown · 19/06/2020 20:11

OP Why are you asking for a friend?

Vodkacranberryplease · 19/06/2020 20:12

Nope, I had two friends try this for years and neither made anything even close to proper money. They had both come ftom senior marketing positions and didn't want to work - but ended up scrabbling around and probably spending more time to make bugger all.

Spending your time on bits and bobs doesn't work. You have to pick one that you can put the effort into that has potential to start with. Not masks and if social media she would have to be extraordinarily good and it would take a long time.

Redtartanshoes · 19/06/2020 20:15

If she has any sort of English I maybe or science qualification tutoring would kill it right now

Pipandmum · 19/06/2020 20:16

Hopefully she will declare her income like a good citizen. So she'd have to make closer to £3000.
