AIBU to think my friend can make £2k in a month?

This is unrelated to my other freelancing thread :)
My friend needs to make 2k in July due to unforeseen circumstances, won't go into details and not a begging thread.
I think as a one off, if she thinks about it now she could pull it off. She doesn't have kids so has lots of time (her words not mine!) and doesn't need to actually be paid for it in July, ideally in August.

I think she could do a combination of:
ebay/facebook marketplace selling
Making and selling face masks (she has a sewing machine and is very clever at stitching so would be easy for her)
Online surveys/e-moderation
Social media moderating
Transcribing

I wondered if Mumsnet thought it was possible and whether you've all got any other creative ideas? :)
Thank you in advance!

riotlady - a 'friend' helps... even so it's an easy £800.

CaveMum · 19/06/2020 18:53

There’s no way a total novice could make £2k in their first month of matched betting. The more lucrative offers require a large bankroll and if you are inexperienced you can make very costly mistakes.

I started in January 2018 and it took me a good 6 weeks to make my first £1k, albeit i was only doing it part time.

I agree with others who say it might be possible alongside a job.

If she hasn't had a declutter for a ,she could have a few 100 quid worth of stuff to sell. However, without a job she would be lucky to make more than £500.

For a while

I'd pay her good money to implement an edit button. Grin

I think if she can't be bothered to source even ideas for herself and she letting you do it for her then it's unlikely that she'll be motivated to do anything at all for herself.

As someone self employed, this is a really good point. She may well be doing this (researching, working out the numbers etc) already but if not then she's in for a shock!

If this thread is actually what is purporting to be, then this ^

This, with bells on!

GameSetMatch · 19/06/2020 19:04

If only it was that easy, if it was everybody would be doing it.

Viviennemary · 19/06/2020 19:06

No. Unless she has some very good things to sell.

Regularsizedrudy · 19/06/2020 19:07

Lol no

forgetthehousework · 19/06/2020 19:09

If she needs to have 2K in July , she'll need to make more than that to cover things like tax and NI. (No, I don't believe she'll even consider declaring any extra income either).

I just want to say that social media/website moderation isn't always easy to get into quickly it my experience, I do some contracting work for two companies, and it ranged between 3-12 months before I even heard back about applications. I don't mean to sound at all discouraging, but it's not likely your friend would be able to get started fast enough to have the money for August. Long term though it's certainly worth it, I average £10-£12 an hour through moderation work.

Cloudworkers is a good option if she's not too squeamish - it's an adult chat site. All text based, no personal details etc. I've seen people earn around £1500 a month before from that alone. She could get started within days too.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/06/2020 19:12

I agree that offering her services as a nanny for a couple of months, starting now, would be the only realistic way she will make any kind of money for the forseeable. All the normal WFH type jobs arent in demand anymore because people are doing their housework/ironing/gardening/dog walking themselves. And the freelance stuff you mentioned is cut throat, a small percentage make a decent living at it but it takes a long time to build up any sort of regular clientele, I know because I used to do it. She certainly wont manage it in a couple months, a couple of years would be more realistic.

Ebay selling could work but she would need to be on it all the time and treat it as a business.

butterry · 19/06/2020 19:18

I have a friend who sells hand sewn items on Etsy, she started making masks a few weeks ago and has sold over £12,000 worth in the last month. I don’t know what her profit margin is but still that’s pretty incredible for a one woman business!

Merryoldgoat · 19/06/2020 19:22

Matches betting will do it 👍🏽

C152H · 19/06/2020 19:25

Transcribing doesn't actually pay well. I think she'd be hard pressed to earn that much using just the methods you describe. As others have suggested, she's better off getting a temp job in an office, especially if she's got a fast typing speed.

nowaitaminute · 19/06/2020 19:25

@ShinyMe I know someone who has made over 4K selling masks since March...it's possible!!

Marsalimay · 19/06/2020 19:27

Let's say there are four weeks in the month, so 20 weekdays, meaning you're looking at earning £100 a day everyday.

I think it depends on how much time she has, what skills and resources etc.

Twillow · 19/06/2020 19:27

@butterry that's pretty impressive! I had an Etsy shop for a while but it was very hit and miss. Hand made things are notoriously difficult to sell for a price that factors in even the minimum wage for labour.
Masks, say.
Most sewers would be pressed to churn out many more than 10-15 a day.
Most customers would be unlikely to pay much more than £5 per mask.
Materials, say £1-2 per mask.
£3 profit - that's £45 profit per day. Even if you sold all the ones you made every day. Not great.

ShinyMe · 19/06/2020 19:29

I bet anyone making money making stuff and selling successfully has some kind of track record of selling and some business acumen though. OP's friend doesn't seem to have that.

Ariela · 19/06/2020 19:30

A friend of mine makes masks and has sold £6K worth in the last month. She has baskets in some local shops, the rest on Etsy and FB Each mask is in a cellophane bag, and is nice/trendy style fabric, has a slot to add a filter if you wish and looks very smart. They sell for £5.99 each.
She reckons they cost £1 in materials, the shops get 25%. So even if you said she sold all through the shops, she's cleared £3K in profit.

SodaSodaBanana · 19/06/2020 19:30

Are there any medical trials on at the moment? I 2 week residential would be £2-4k

Ickabog · 19/06/2020 19:32

Twillow Also the fees Etsy charge would make quite a dent in any profit.

I wonder how much of the 12k sales is actual profit.

Alsohuman · 19/06/2020 19:35

Apparently the going rate for cleaning holiday cottages is £25 an hour.
