AIBU to think my friend can make £2k in a month?

This is unrelated to my other freelancing thread :)
My friend needs to make 2k in July due to unforeseen circumstances, won't go into details and not a begging thread.
I think as a one off, if she thinks about it now she could pull it off. She doesn't have kids so has lots of time (her words not mine!) and doesn't need to actually be paid for it in July, ideally in August.

I think she could do a combination of:
ebay/facebook marketplace selling
Making and selling face masks (she has a sewing machine and is very clever at stitching so would be easy for her)
Online surveys/e-moderation
Social media moderating
Transcribing

I wondered if Mumsnet thought it was possible and whether you've all got any other creative ideas? :)
Thank you in advance!

Does she work?

DiddlySquatty · 19/06/2020 18:27

A lot of the stuff you’ve mentioned is very small £ especially stuff like surveys.

Unless she has a lot of high value items I’d say a few hundred max would be very good going if she goes on a real concentrated eBay spate.

Yes to matched betting but again you’re being unrealistic, she needs to be very numerate and you can make expensive mistakes. You also need a float to get going, again possibly £200 in the month would be realistic.

ritasueandbob · 19/06/2020 18:30

Matched betting - I've made 750 since last weekend

bridgetreilly · 19/06/2020 18:30

Unless she's got £2k worth of stuff to sell on eBay/FB, then no.

HaudMaDug · 19/06/2020 18:31

Fruit and veg picking might only be min wage but better than trying/hoping to sell on the internet.

DiddlySquatty · 19/06/2020 18:32

@ritasueandbob out of interest was that majority Ascot? Any casino in that?

I have done majority of the signups but debating signing up to oddsmonkey again if there are good reloads about. But realise I’ve just missed ascot.

Peanutbutterfingers · 19/06/2020 18:33

Does she have many friends wfh with kids? Babysitting/tutoring?

Smallsteps88 · 19/06/2020 18:33

@PurpleDaisies

That seems quite an ambitious target.

Maybe she could take in ironing.

I have an ironing business with an established client list. Pre covid I was chock full. I opened again a few weeks ago and not a single booking.
DiddlySquatty · 19/06/2020 18:34

But horses aren’t the best for a newbie so for this person £750 in a week on football offers is probably not realistic and casino can be hit and miss wi thy understanding the offers and the risk, rollover requirements etc.

Nikhedonia · 19/06/2020 18:35

What is matched betting?

The other suggestion seem quite unrealistic!

PurpleDaisies · 19/06/2020 18:35

Clearly I needed to have put a smiley face after “Maybe she could take in ironing”. That’s what’s always said on these threads. Smile

itswinetime · 19/06/2020 18:35

It's all about context really isn't it?

Does she have a lot of things she wants to sell and would get a decent price for on eBay?

Making masks? Is there really a big demand for the cloth home made masks I haven't seen many people wearing them plus you need the cash up front for supplies.

Online surveys pay a pittance I have no idea what e moderation or social meadow moderation pay but I'm guessing not much to a newbie with no experience! Don't most people start as volunteers and then work up to getting paid.

And transcribing possibly depends on her typing speed and qualifications for how many pence per line she could achieve. It might go some way to achieving her goal.

If there was a fast way to make money you can bet everyone would be doing it unless she has some unwanted family heirlooms to sell she's better of looking at trying to get a temporary job or possibly speaking to her bank. If the cash flow problem is because of covid there are things they can do to help.

titchy · 19/06/2020 18:38

There is - matched betting! And quite a lot do it. Though most wont because they don't understand how it works. £2k in a month assuming she has no current bookie accounts (and maybe a friend Wink) is easy by just doing loads of sign ups. Team Profit on Facebook...

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/06/2020 18:40

Selling what on Facebook? Not homemade shit, certainly.

Juanmorebeer · 19/06/2020 18:40

With this bloody childcare crisis the best thing she could do is become a full time nanny for someone who needs one. Has she got any experience, a DBS check etc? These things are not even legally needed to work as a nanny though.

In my area she could pretty much name her price right now there is such a lack of options.

nevermorelenore · 19/06/2020 18:42

I'm a freelance writer and can earn 2k or so in a month part time. But that is after years of networking and building an established client list. I think I earned about £200 a month for a while when I first started.

From what I understand, transcription work is really competitive and you'd need to buy equipment, learn how to do it properly etc. I used to be part of a freelancers club and there were quite a few women who did it and apparently work was spotty.

Loads of people are furloughed right now so will be doing stuff like ironing, dog walking etc as a side gig. It's probably not the best time to start something up.

Lockdownseperation · 19/06/2020 18:42

Is it a one off? It depends on what she has to sell but I can’t imagine someone having 2k worth of second hand stuff that’s she doesn’t want. Unless she is my MIL, in which case I’m sure she has that much.

riotlady · 19/06/2020 18:43

@titchy when I went through all the signups i earned about £800 profit, £2k feels like a stretch unless you have a massive amount to put down at the beginning

louloubelx · 19/06/2020 18:45

Sign up to fiver agency if she can do freelance work....
Or teaching English as a foreign language, you don’t always need a qualification for it, depends which agency you join...
Matched betting can be lucrative but ascot has loads of offers so that one will be missed. Also make sure she does her homework first as people can make costly mistakes.
Get a cleaning job, there are loads of them about at the moment....

MsJaneAusten · 19/06/2020 18:45

Unless she’s got six mulberry handbags lurking in the back of a cupboard, no.

nosnugglesforyou · 19/06/2020 18:46

Surveys? I used to fill these in as I enjoyed it. Used to make £100 a year......max

notalwaysalondoner · 19/06/2020 18:47

I’d agree with the nanny/tutoring suggestions. People desperate for childcare and she could do full time nannying plus the other stuff you mentioned on evenings/weekends. If she had decent A level grades could do tutoring - although both of these may require DBS check so may be too slow, but far more reliable and higher earning than the other ideas you mentioned.

Other efficient ideas are around renting - does she have a spare room she could rent out? She’d easily make a few hundred. She could even turn her living room into a bedroom for a month or two if she’s desperate - people still need places to live even in lockdown. If she lives in a touristy area she could even try and rent somewhere smaller/cheaper for herself and rent out her whole house/flat - demand for holidays is going to be massive in July/August.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 19/06/2020 18:50

I think if she can't be bothered to source even ideas for herself and she letting you do it for her then it's unlikely that she'll be motivated to do anything at all for herself. Hmm

Standrewsschool · 19/06/2020 18:50

Ambitious. Don’t be tempted to loan it to her unless you are willing to loose the money.

Can she get a bank loan?

bluebluezoo · 19/06/2020 18:51

I’d get an interest free credit card, dump 2 or 3 k on there and give myself the 18 months to pay it back....
