To be irritated by receiving flowers

Firstly let be clear I did politely thank the sender, I'm not terrible. But I was sent flowers in the post yesterday and my only reaction was annoyance.

I don't own a vase so had to find a jug big enough for them. Loads of random wrapping that makes a big mess, loads of water in the wrapping that I didn't know about so flooded the table, spilt half the packet of the food liquid stuff which is very sticky, couldn't cut through the thick stems with first pair of scissors and had to use a knife.

Then they last a little while and don't even look that nice, and once they are past their best there's smelly, slimy water to deal with a drippy bunch of dead plant matter to chuck away.

I would happily never be sent or given flowers ever again. Just me or anyone else not like them?

I love having vases of flowers around the house, especially when not having a garden

You shouldn't have been so clumsy with the packaging

Catwaving · 18/06/2020 22:42

Those sorts of flowers are a disaster ecologically. Plus all the vile crackly plastic, I'd be much happier and grateful to receive something someone has picked themselves locally

helpIhateclothesshopping · 18/06/2020 23:06

I was going to buy some for a friend who's had a tough couple of weeks, not sure I will now. Buying an inoffensive gift is such a minefield isn't it? Too many toiletries-risk them thinking you think they smell, chocolate- they could get fat, gin- they're an alcoholic? Probably best not to send gifts to people unless you know them well?

Harls1969 · 18/06/2020 23:20

I do know exactly what you mean. Whilst receiving any gift is always lovely...I have to put flowers up high or one of my cats tries to attack them, do then I can't see or appreciate them

NeverForgetYourDreams · 18/06/2020 23:25

I'm with you OP. I don't like flowers and don't own a vase. We used an old Nespresso water container for the ones I received by post this week.....

Ineke · 19/06/2020 07:58

I am in agreement with you OP they they take a bit of work and sadly don't last long but I love receiving them and often buy a small bunch from Aldi for £2.00. Had some sunflowers delivered to me, from my son for my birthday last week .They have lasted ages and bring sunshine into the house. Being Dutch I would love to have more indoor plants everywhere but my house is not suitable from a light perspective so only a few spots for flowers and plants.

HappydaysArehere · 19/06/2020 09:22

I tend to send a plant if possible simply because they last longer. However, I enjoy receiving flowers simply because I cannot bring myself to cut garden flowers (I feel like a murderer) and I usually paint them.

I think getting someone a bottle of naice gin, wine or whatever is fine unless you know they're Muslim/in AA/can't drink for medical reasons, and a box of chocolates is too. If they don't want it, it can be stashed away and will make a handy re-gift at some point. Flowers can't even be re-gifted unless you do it the same day you receive them! They're just such an inconvenient thing to be given! FlowersAngry

I dont think your BU, however I think your being rather miserable about it.
Flowers are lovely, they smell lovely, they look lovely and are a beautiful gesture that someone was thinking about you.

I love being sent flowers. Especially as a suprise.

Rache49 · 19/06/2020 14:58

I would be delighted to think someone took the time to send Flowers. Fancy not having a vase to hand !! I have one in my lounge which looks nice even without Flowers . I bought it when I moved into my flat so at least I would have one. Accept unexpected gifts with a bit better grace next time or you will complain in here that no-one is sending you anything.

As I've said a few times I thanked the sender nicely so I think that's covered. As for not being sent anything that is actually the dream scenario.

YANBU. I hate flowers for exactly these reasons.

Lottielouc · 19/06/2020 16:00

I got sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers from friends this year for my birthday, a lovely surprise! I rarely get flowers from my partner these days as the dog is allergic to everything so if I receive any I get chrysanthemumas! Lol
I probably wouldn’t want them very regularly because of all you outlined but they are beautiful and it’s an occasional treat!

Catwaving do you mean wild flowers, or from someone’s garden? Is there a field (like strawberry picking) where you can pick your own flowers?
Removing flowers from the wild means no one else gets to enjoy them and it’s illegal in many cases (public areas etc)

screwthedoldrums · 19/06/2020 16:37

I've received 2 flower deliveries in lockdown. First from my sister, a frontline nurse to thank me for supporting our dad through cancer treatments whilst she is unable to and the second from my best friend who is shielding her daughter with CF, so I'm shopping for them.

Both made me weep. Flowers are a beautiful gesture right now.

screwthedoldrums · 19/06/2020 16:39

I bought myself a bunch of 5 chrysanthemums 3 weeks ago, those big fluffy ones. They still look like new in my window now. A fiver.

KeepingPlain · 19/06/2020 16:53

I wish I could have flowers in my house, my damn partner gets hay-fever quite bad if I get them, so I have to choose between him breathing and flowers. When he annoys me I choose the flowers. Grin

kennypppppppp · 19/06/2020 16:58

I hate being sent flowers. I don't even get them in the house - I give them to a neighbour (that's not me being smug, it is to show how much I HATE getting flowers).

For a million reasons I hate getting flowers and I hate getting them so much that I cba to even give one reason as to my high levels of hate.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Like other PPs, I believe people are plotting to kill me sometimes....Asthma and hayfever

But because it's flowers you still have to put the damn Posies Of Death in a vase, enthuse Thankyou and pretend they are pretty & lovely, not methods of your imminent assassination.

KeepingPlain · 19/06/2020 17:26

@Idiidntstop

Next time you get flowers, you should be thinking 'how did I annoy them this time?' 😂

Idiidntstop · 19/06/2020 17:44

😂😂😂

Guylan · 19/06/2020 17:47

Each to their own but I adore flowers and am delighted if anyone sends them to me. They are expensive so a lovely treat.

ProbablyFault · 19/06/2020 18:02

I don't usually love getting flowers, although I sometimes send other people flowers because I think I'm probably odd.
