To be irritated by receiving flowers

Firstly let be clear I did politely thank the sender, I'm not terrible. But I was sent flowers in the post yesterday and my only reaction was annoyance.

I don't own a vase so had to find a jug big enough for them. Loads of random wrapping that makes a big mess, loads of water in the wrapping that I didn't know about so flooded the table, spilt half the packet of the food liquid stuff which is very sticky, couldn't cut through the thick stems with first pair of scissors and had to use a knife.

Then they last a little while and don't even look that nice, and once they are past their best there's smelly, slimy water to deal with a drippy bunch of dead plant matter to chuck away.

I would happily never be sent or given flowers ever again. Just me or anyone else not like them?

Love it @MartinDry!! Grin

Lozz22 · 18/06/2020 12:22

The rose in the middle is fake but the 4 roses around it are the ones I dried in the airing cupboard.

Yup *Imissmoominmumma

I always turn up with wine, flowers and nice chocolate. My friends must hate me!

Yup, sorry. Wine goes to cupboard to take with my cola to a party, Iris gets the flowers, and chocolates go to DCs who leave the nutty ones.

Now if you brought cheese... we'd be friends forever ! Grin

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 12:27

Iris gets the flowers

I also have an elderley neighbour called Iris. Had it not been coronaramadrama going on she might have liked them.

@Lozz22 sorry for your loss .

@Sparticuscaticus You really have to know those you are visiting quite well to give them cheese.

giantangryrooster · 18/06/2020 12:33

Lozz Thanks

Imissmoominmama · 18/06/2020 12:35

@Sparticuscaticus- I take the wine for the dinner party!

I have taken cheese on occasion too. We have a very good cheese stall on our high Street.

HunkyPunk · 18/06/2020 12:43

I'd much rather have flowers which can be enjoyed, then dumped, than have to house extra 'stuff' I haven't got room for!

Btw, your op said that the flowers were wrapped, but with water in which went everywhere? Isn't that actually a ready-to-display aquapak, meant to be a helpful way of giving flowers without the bother of having to decant them into a vase? Grin

It was an irritating halfway house as far as I can see. There was clear cellophane filled with blocks of white stuff a bit like oasis. Then pink tissue paper round the outside. The white stuff and the pink cover disguised the volume of water inside. It wasn't one of those solid, bulbous bases that look like a bulb so I just cut into the cellophane not realising it was full of water.

My mu always said it's a shame because they die quickly. So she either gets live plant or edibles... See picGrin (for illustration purposes)

GrinGrin coronaramadrama 😂😂

It wouldn't phase my Iris. She loaded bombs into RAF planes during the war. She's very staunch about it all "I'm not 70, I'm 96 you know.., they said 70 year olds had to stay in.." 🤣🤣
(She hasn't been out tho, we wave through the window. She take my flowers in if I'd had any, Coronavirus or not!)

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 13:01

Sparticuscaticus I love the sound of your Iris!

Cannot BEAR them. My MIL will be here in a minute and she will bring them, always does. Drives me mad!

EachandEveryone · 18/06/2020 13:04

I adore flowers and treat myself to a bunch once a month. They come in a box. No fuss.

Imissmoominmumma you can be my friend Grin

Yes, exactly. If you're my friend visiting me, you'd know cheese is the answer. It's no secret. Smile

Who sent DapplesThing the flowers doesn't know her really... if you like flowers yourself you tend to notice it in other peoples houses, who has cut flowers and vases and who doesn't. Cheese people find each other. Flavoured Gin sinkers, ditto... Wink

I'm pretty sure I can figure what'd make my friends smile and few would it be flowers... Also Did you know you can get old stylie Icecups, white mice, bonbons on amazon? Now that's a fabulous gift delivery service ...

StampMc · 18/06/2020 13:18

I hate them. Too faffy and already dead. Little corpses in a vase. And I feel I need to keep a vase which is a waste of cupboard space. I hate the slime and I hate the whole concept of cutting them down and I hate the idea of all those women spraying pesticides in poly tunnels to grow stuff that will be sliming up peoples wheely bins in a fortnight. I like chocolate and most food gifts and at least alcohol can be kept and regifted. I like toilets, goats and also like a bunch of daffs on mother’s day because I AM UNREASONABLE
I thank people dutifully if they gift me flowers because I am polite but if you think that every gift you have ever given anyone has delighted the recipient from the tips of their hair to the soles of their boots then you are probably a little delusional.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 18/06/2020 13:23

I'm allergic to pollen and get allergy-related asthma. I always presume flowers are an attempt on my life. I think I'd rather receive anthrax in the post, to be honest.

CherryPavlova · 18/06/2020 13:25

I always have fresh flowers in the house. My one indulgence. My husband always brings me flowers each week but I often top up so we have three of four vases full. Sweet peas at the moment.

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 13:25

Little corpses in a vase 🤣🤣🤣

StampMc that entire post was excellent!

Extreme, but not unreasonable in the circumstances.

I accept any tribute, I am always iffy about charity farm animals though in case they are badly treated. But food, drink, flowers, plants, a donkey rescue, whatever. Although just now I'd like a visit from some nice! I'm fed up with chatting to neighbours, pleasant as they are.

Well maybe not anthrax. Icycups yes..

See DappledThing 😄 you have found your people!

Jonas14 · 18/06/2020 17:44

I’d feel irritated too. I’d rather pick my own from the garden or weeds on the side of the road. Can be so pretty and much more eco friendly. Give me expensive chocs every time 😂

IYCBABeKind · 18/06/2020 17:53

See I'm with the op mostly I can't be bothered with the hassle although I do like flowers but I've told my husband I don't want cheep supermarket flowers I'd rather he only bought me them once in a blue moon and if he does I want a beautiful bouquet! One that is worth the hassle of looking after otherwise just don't bother as I wouldn't appreciate them (I seem to get more chocolate now too 🥰 bonus!)

skyblu · 18/06/2020 18:09

YANBU to not really like flowers....each to their own.

YABU in the fact that somebody paid you a kind gesture, which they didn’t have to and would’ve cost them money and they did it to brighten your day/thought you’d like them.
