To be irritated by receiving flowers

Firstly let be clear I did politely thank the sender, I'm not terrible. But I was sent flowers in the post yesterday and my only reaction was annoyance.

I don't own a vase so had to find a jug big enough for them. Loads of random wrapping that makes a big mess, loads of water in the wrapping that I didn't know about so flooded the table, spilt half the packet of the food liquid stuff which is very sticky, couldn't cut through the thick stems with first pair of scissors and had to use a knife.

Then they last a little while and don't even look that nice, and once they are past their best there's smelly, slimy water to deal with a drippy bunch of dead plant matter to chuck away.

I would happily never be sent or given flowers ever again. Just me or anyone else not like them?

Personally not a huge fan either especially not proper bouquets from a florist - so expensive! On our 10th wedding anniversary my husband (who buys me a cheap £2.99 Aldi bunch most weeks) apologised for not getting me flowers as part of my gift. I took the opportunity to tell him it was FINE as I’m really not a huge fan of flowers and much prefer chocolate or alcohol (true). The next day a replica bouquet of my wedding flowers turned up at the door (ordered in advance but too short notice to be delivered on the actual anniversary). Hastily apologised to husband and was genuinely touched (but they were still a faff to look after Grin

YABU and miserable and clumsy and ungrateful...I'm a bit jealous, I want gifted flowers!

LeSquigh · 18/06/2020 18:19

YANBU. Flowers are a huge waste of money - they die relatively quickly and just take up space. You occasionally look at them and what? A plant would be nicer.

My fave quote about flowers Grin

Don't be a tw*t

kennycat · 18/06/2020 18:52

I’m at a point where I cringe when I get flowers. I do t get them often but my dad died six months ago and I got sent flowers then so if I get hem them now I just feel sad.
When I got flowers during that time I willed them to die quickly so I could chuck them as it was just a reminder of why I’d got them in the first place.

Im sure this will pass but that’s where I currently am. X

shamalidacdak · 18/06/2020 19:21

Wow. Just wow.

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 18/06/2020 19:26

@kennycat that’s so sad you still feel like that. Hope it gets easier for you.
My dad died a few days ago and I feel so lucky that so many people have taken the time to send me flowers. I did have to buy a new vase and rinse out a couple of Kilner jars to put them in though.

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 19:53

Sorry to hear that kennycat. I hope you will be able to enjoy flowers again sometime soon.

Wow, the OP's post really shows that there is literally no limit to what people will get pissed off about. You're seriously annoyed that people send you flowers?

littlemisskt · 18/06/2020 19:58

I like flowers because I don’t have to keep them forever....I’ve even asked for a flower post subscription from our local florist for my birthday

ChilliCheese123 · 18/06/2020 19:59

My primary school age child can unwrap a bunch of flowers and pop them in a vase, with minimal mess. Do you also make such a meal of cooking a meal, or doing laundry?

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 20:00

Yes, for all the reasons I listed! Annoyed, not furious or devastated or any such nonsense but irritated by the mess they create and the chore they entail.

Wondered if anyone else felt the same, quite a few people do.

There almost certainly is no limit to what will piss people off. Somebody, somewhere has the potential to be irritated by everything I would assume.

Send them my way then !! I love flowers so much the brighten up the house so much and so pretty to look at

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 20:04

DH does 95% of the cooking. Laundry? No, not at all. I am quite particular about how neatly I hang it. Don't bother with any of that sorting though, everything goes in together.

This thread has made me get out and sort out my Sweet Williams which were all in one of my jugs and too cramped. I've been meaning to put some in another vase since Monday and now it's done and I have a jug in the living room and a vase in my bedroom.

I love cut flowers and if I was being sent them on a regular basis by someone, or even just once in a while, I'd be happy as a pig in muck.

Buffs · 18/06/2020 20:19

Totally with you. I hate them.

Paddyclova · 18/06/2020 20:51

You’ve taken it all well Dappled. As much as I dislike the ungratefulness I think I quite like you Grin A couple of years ago my friend had a party and got lots of champagne. She doesn’t drink it and was sneering about it and being dismissive. It was just so bad mannered in my opinion that this wound me up a bit. Some expensive ones too. People work hard for the money they spend and if they spend it on you instead of themselves I just think you should be nothing other than grateful Smile

DappledThings · 18/06/2020 21:01

Nackajory · 18/06/2020 21:08

Me too OP. I think they're overpriced and many of them dont even look that nice. After a few days they just get chucked in the bin. They usually come across as an insincere gift. I feel similarly unimpressed by cards. Unncessay clutter. Both wasteful IMO.

Chickoletta · 18/06/2020 21:10

One of the most obnoxious things I’ve ever read on MN. Well done.

I’m loving all of the ‘flowers by post’ adverts on this thread.
I love the pictures of them, pity they die though
