Do you wear a face covering at the supermarket?

I don’t normally but I have a coldsore so think I’ll wear one tomorrow, hopefully I won’t get any passive aggressive comments from other shoppers that have been reported here.

I thought the idea was that we all wore masks to protect each other, not ourselves?

So when I wear a mask, I'm protecting you, but by not wearing one, you're not protecting me 😕

I understand medical exceptions but around here there is almost no-one wearing a mask. When all the scientific advice in most countries is suggesting that we should be wearing masks in public, I can't help but feel that people are being selfish by not wearing one.

If social distancing were sufficient, the scientists wouldn't be advising wearing masks/face covering. It just feels like people don't give a shit about others, and they're almost bragging about not wearing one.

If social distancing were sufficient, the scientists wouldn't be advising wearing masks/face covering.

Scientists are only recommending it when social distancing is difficult, for example on public transport.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/06/2020 23:01

Yes. ScribblyGum I was surprised how quickly I stopped feeling like a bit of a wally for wearing one.

Cantata · 12/06/2020 23:02

No. I don't own one. If they become law (which would be absolutely disgraceful, but nothing is impossible in this climate of complete hysteria and collective leave-taking of sanity), I will make a vague attempt to push a scarf up a bit higher, for about 5 seconds.

Sparklesocks · 12/06/2020 23:06

Yes. Makes me feel between to wear on in shops, but I don’t wear it if I’m just walking outside. I have a black cotton one I bought from Etsy. Most other people wear them too. Nobody has ever commented.

DamnYankee · 12/06/2020 23:06

Yes. Most people do here.
However, I wouldn't judge someone for not wearing one.
(I do hate mine, though. Makes me very anxious...)

Idontbelieveit12 · 12/06/2020 23:08

No. Everyone who I have encountered in a shop with them on seems to decide they are invincible and they don’t need to socially distance.

MayFayre · 12/06/2020 23:10

No. I carry one in case I get told to put one on, but hope I don’t have to use it. I don’t judge others who do wear them.

Lynda07 · 12/06/2020 23:11

Of course you won't if you're covering your face. I would wear a mask if I went out but I haven't been out for months. I'm thinking of crossing the road tomorrow to post letters :-).

gaggiagirl · 12/06/2020 23:11

I really feel the odd one out if I don't wear a mask in shops here. The majority wear them. Even the big gangs of teenagers wear them. There are a lot of brands aimed at young people that make branded, colourful and dare I say trendy masks. God I said trendy. That makes me sound ancient.

DameFanny · 12/06/2020 23:14

I do. No one's judged me so far I don't think, and this week I got nearly instant relief from hayfever while I was wearing it - I was tempted to keep it on for the rest of the day Grin

LuluJakey1 · 12/06/2020 23:14

No but I will on the metro from tomorrow and might if shops get busy once more of them open. I have made 3 each for me, DH and 3 DC plus PIL and DH's grandma. I am quite pleased with myself Grin They are all double layered cotton and have a cotton insert layer sewn in as well. I have used really pretty materials- close weave cotton. Dead simple to make. I made a few different ones to see what worked best in terms of fit.
DH is a bit meh about wearing one but he'll get on with it. The children are quite excited- not Ds2 who is too little.

StarintheMorning · 12/06/2020 23:15

ExhaustedFlamingo Yes, ‘my mask protects you, your mask protects me’ is the slogan most of Europe have used.

I wear one when supermarket shopping, most people here seem to.

I you want to cover up a cold sore then the patches are the best thing ever, take away any pain, and get rid of them very quickly.

Wakemeuuuup · 12/06/2020 23:16

I do and I wear gloves. I'm in the minority though

ShebaShimmyShake · 12/06/2020 23:16

Yes. Never been an issue.

paxillin · 12/06/2020 23:18

No, but there are always a few people who do, nobody reacts to this in my RL.

thistimeofyear · 12/06/2020 23:20

I wear one out of respect for other people and shop staff ( who I think deserve a medal). The reason people don’t wear a mask is because it doesn’t “benefit” them. There was a lovely clergyman on Zoe Ball one morning who said something like “love is wearing a mask” or something like that.

DotForShort · 12/06/2020 23:22

Absolutely, every single time.

WitsEnding · 12/06/2020 23:25

Not in the supermarket, but I do on the bus. It’s probably 20% of people in the shops and 10% on the bus who wear them at the moment.

autumnhare · 12/06/2020 23:27

I don't but have some ordered. However if I'd been aware of the double chin smoothing properties as @ExCwmbranDweller said, I'd have been wearing them for years. About 20% of people wear them when I'm at my local Tesco.

Jokes aside, the problem is the government have been so unclear and dithery about masks that people have been left unsure about them. What they ought to have done is (upon relevant scientific research) encouraged all to wear them wherever possible whenever out in confined public places like shops right from the start.

Mask wearing isn't even new, where I live, as we (usually) have a massive population of Chinese students.

Chickychickydodah · 12/06/2020 23:32

Yes and gloves

TimeWastingButFun · 12/06/2020 23:33

Of course. It's recommended at the moment. I hope it will become compulsory as a load of idiots still think it's ok to go between two people on the arrows.

Chochito · 12/06/2020 23:34

Where I live (abroad) it is the law to wear a mask. It seems completely normal now.
