Do you wear a face covering at the supermarket?

I don’t normally but I have a coldsore so think I’ll wear one tomorrow, hopefully I won’t get any passive aggressive comments from other shoppers that have been reported here.

It's recommended at the moment

Only if you can’t socially distance. That’s not true for the supermarkets here.

Angelnix · 12/06/2020 23:36

Yes, I've been wearing one in enclosed public spaces (supermarkets etc) since social distancing was introduced. I don't wear gloves though, just good hand hygiene.

For those who are having glasses steaming up, try some shaving foam or washing up liquid wiped on you glasses and then off again with a soft cloth, helps to repel moisture (top tip from a nurse who wears glasses and masks all day!)

Hingeandbracket · 12/06/2020 23:38

The only people who have failed to maintain appropriate social distancing in my visits to the Supermarket have all been wearing masks!!

IndiaMay · 12/06/2020 23:41

No, a few people do round here. I've not seen anyone make comments. The only thing that annoys me is people literally shove into you as they seem to think putting a hanky like material over your mouth is akin to a lead shield and that no social distancing then applies

WotsitWiggle · 12/06/2020 23:42

I thought the idea was that we all wore masks to protect each other, not ourselves?

I didn't wear one, up until last week when I read that the above was why they are worn in Asia. So my mask protects you if I am ill, your mask protects me if you are ill. So it needs everyone to buy in to it.

I'm finding there's less distancing going on in the supermarkets now, whilst people are mainly following the arrows, there's less inclination to wait at the end of an aisle. So i feel more comfortable if most people are wearing masks.

WagathaChristieDoesItAgain · 12/06/2020 23:45

Yes I do - because I go to a corner shop where people keep coming close to me

SingingInTheShithouse · 12/06/2020 23:47

Yes, always, we all do & have had no negative comments at all

Woventabby · 12/06/2020 23:48

Yes, I do in shops.

DancingWithTheDevil · 12/06/2020 23:51

I do, and today while I was out it seemed that at least 50% of people had some kind of face covering on.

nancy75 · 12/06/2020 23:52

I do because the people working in the shop have people breathing on them all day. I’m there by choice, they’ve got to work. The least I can do is keep my germs to myself as much as possible.

Seelow · 12/06/2020 23:53

Less than 10% do here in the big supermarkets

Megan2018 · 12/06/2020 23:56

I’ve not been in yet but have one ready, DH does. We get most of our shopping delivered.

I wish they’d just make it mandatory so people have to get on with it.

idontlookoldenough · 12/06/2020 23:57

Not many around here are wearing masks, I had a chuckle to myself a couple of weeks ago when I was in the queue to get into Tesco at the irony of the bloke who passed me with his mask around his chin so he could smoke his cigaretteGrin

PurpleDaisies · 13/06/2020 00:03

I wish they’d just make it mandatory so people have to get on with it.

People seem to not realise there are disadvantages to everyone wearing masks, particularly for people who rely on lip reading to support their communication.

When there isn’t good evidence that masks help when you can socially distance effectively, we shouldn’t be making life more difficult for literally millions of people.

tillyandmilly · 13/06/2020 00:06

I always wear one when I go into shops/supermarkets. Its selfish not to - its for other people really not for you. In case you are asymptomatic and you could pass it onto other people.

MrsClatterbuck · 13/06/2020 00:09

I do though sometimes I forget. In Toronto it is mandatory to wear them in some stores. They won't let you in without one. Not sure if it is a government requirement. A mask as I understand it will not protect you but other people so if everyone wears one they are all protecting each other.

CalliopeMeansMusic · 13/06/2020 00:11

No I don’t and I flipping hate them. I struggle to hear what people are saying anyway, let alone when they are behind a face mask and two feet of plastic screens! Am dreading them becoming prevalent as it’s going to be a massive barrier to shopping and travelling independently, especially when it come to noisy trains/buses/shops etc.

Aveisenim · 13/06/2020 00:13

I have the very few times I've visited shops, my glasses get fogged up but I don't care.

PickAChew · 13/06/2020 00:18

How do you know what you're buying, @Aveisenim?

I struggle when i can't lip read too.I think the biggest change that shops need to make, right now, is losing the musak, though coop can keep theirs because it's always entertaining.

Starcup · 13/06/2020 00:20

No I don’t at all.

I’m late 30’s, BMI of 20, no underlying health conditions, don’t smoke etc.... and work with the public and deal with about 50 people each day I’m working. Some lick their fingers before handing me their money/cheque 😦🤢but I take it and then wash my baby’s afterwards (getting slagged off and hugged and puffed fat by the person next in the queue- sorry I’m washing my hands mainly for you sir, clearly in you’re mud 70’s and overweight. Now jets pay in your £10 cash and £5 cheque..... 😦🤨🙄😫 if if wasn’t so ridiculous I’d have to laugh.

I can’t laugh though, as I have friends and family losing their jobs left right and centre that’s it’s the fucking travesty in it all

PickAChew · 13/06/2020 00:20

And has anyone whittering on about protecting others properly analysed the community transmission rates vs prevalence? Pretty negligible, now.

Starcup · 13/06/2020 00:22

You’ve got to love fucking predictive text!!👆

Sh05 · 13/06/2020 00:39

@MereDintofPandiculation
Thanks for that!
I will try the soap trick and see how it goes.

raeray · 13/06/2020 00:45

Yes I wear one. Public transport, shops etc.
Cloth one bought from eBay.
I also socially distance/don't touch my face/wash my hands...so wearing a mask doesn't stop me doing all the other things we're meant to do.
There's more and more evidence showing that face coverings do make a difference.
It's uncomfortable for the first few mins and it's a relief when you can take it off but I figure if surgeons can't do 6 hours operations in full PPE then my trip round the supermarket I can wear my simple face covering!

I'm also a health professional who has seen Covid and it's effects on patients- it'd be interesting to know if there is a higher percentage of us in the NHS that wear masks in supermarkets etc than those who don't work in health care.

EC22 · 13/06/2020 00:50

I do.
