It’s not really AIBU as it’s my opinion but anyway...

I was at work yesterday and a young woman came in and clear as day had lip fillers. I was looking thinking , I can not understand why people pay to have this done. It looks awful.

You can tell straight away that they’ve had fillers

I assume slightly enhancing them can be a positive in some cases, but some just go too far until they look like comedy lips and over do it.

I was just looking thinking, I bet that woman looked more appealing and attractive to the average person with her own, natural lips!

I felt sorry for her that she was thinking that would make her more attractive....

I dread my DD growing up seeing these imagines and finding them beautiful.

@MorrisZapp

The reason why you've never seen a natural pair is because if they looked natural you wouldn't know it was filler.

I usually have botox, nobody knows or has noticed. So the idea that injections 'never look natural' just means 'some people overdo it and end up with an obvious result'.

Yep, I have Botox and Mumsnet swears they would all be able to tell. I promise you that nobody can. As you'll know, it doesn't make you look frozen or plastic unless you madly overdo it. It just gets rid of the lines and makes you look less tired and angry. My own husband hasn't noticed, nor has my mother, nor any of my closest friends. I've even been in conversations where people derided Botox passionately, clearly completely that I've done it. No, they weren't being passive aggressive. They did not know I've done it. Why would they?

I'm letting everyone think they can ALWAYS tell, though, because it means they definitely won't know that I have!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/06/2020 17:05

I also think you can keep your 'pity' to yourself. It sounds very, very fake.

candilemon · 12/06/2020 17:05

In Pic 1 the person's bottom lip is rounded, as if it is swollen - which it is, I guess. The person is doing that pouting thing, too.

In Pic 2 the lips are not puffed. They are normal and lovely.

Disregard · 12/06/2020 17:05

I don't think it's helpful to critique individual women for their choices - we should be critiquing a culture in which women are expected to invest time and money to achieve a look we have been conditioned to believe is beautiful. Who says thin lips aren't beautiful? We should be questioning where these norms come from and why so many of us buy into them unquestioningly.

motherheroic · 12/06/2020 17:06

Seeing a lot of talk about fashion here but the ordinary woman who gets it done does it because having paper thin upper lip makes you appear gummy when you smile. Made worse if you have larger teeth.

I have large teeth, but I have bigger lips so it balances out. If I had a paper thin top lip I would absolutely get it done. It would look ridiculous otherwise.

My lips are so thin and rapidly disappearing with middle age! I would definitely consider going to see a reputable physician to have them filled, if I had the spare money

Me too, I won't have anywhere to put my lippy soon!

I'd be scared of ending up with a trout pout though.

fridpst · 12/06/2020 17:08

I'm not sure the argument regarding "work" done well isn't noticeable. If that were true how come so many celebrities with their wealth & contacts look like they have had work done?

Herecomethehotstepper · 12/06/2020 17:08

It's a trend like anything else. I follow some and don't judge those who follow others.

But I just cannot believe that they are harmless to a person's long term health! Botox, fillers and implants must surely be harmful, even if they are done properly. Saying that, I had my eyebrows microbladed, so cognitive dissonance? 🤷‍♀️

Circe2020 · 12/06/2020 17:08

YeahWhatevver I always think of Leslie Ash when I see that, poor cow did it before it became safer.

YeahWhatevver · 12/06/2020 17:10

Eckhart

Yes, I think rather than them wanting it to be obvious, they didn't really mind if it was obvious, when asked what they felt if people realised they'd had work done and the response was that it's a show of wealth/status/self investment etc.

I think that the "good cosmetic work shouldn't be visible" idea only works within very small limits, as soon as you're beyond those limits in terms of size/scope of work, it can be the best work in the world and its still visible. There's no hiding excessive cosmetic surgery of any kind I don't think.

I think some people must be in complete denial about their appearance if they really think people don't know.

whatthehay · 12/06/2020 17:11

YABU

You don't have to have them and you don't need to judge people who do.

That girl doesn't care what you think.

Kaathesnake · 12/06/2020 17:11

I fell up the kitchen step about 3 years ago, straight into my face... I ended up with huge lips... it’s certainly a weird feeling ... and a weird look!! They took about 10 days to go back to normal. It’s not a look I’d choose, tbh (and I have botox😳)
Each to their own I guess. A lot of the young girls at work have their lips done... they are only 18 or 19, which I feel is very young for it.

Starcup · 12/06/2020 17:11

**See now OP, if you were talking about tattoos you'd have your arse handed to you.

But, as it's lip-fillers, fair game eh?

I don't have them, no tattoos either but why do you and others feel the need to comment so spitefully on what other women do? Dressing it up as 'opinion' doesn't cut it really either**

That’s your opinion, of which you’re quite entitled to.

I’m allowed to feel as I like. And I feel that women are under so much pressure to look a certain way that they are willing to put chemicals in their lips. That worries me.

I thunk they would look far better without, again I’m allowed to think that

Fridpst because they're surrounded by 'Yes' people.

Snowdown24 · 12/06/2020 17:11

Picture in the left looks like it has fillers because they don’t ‘test’ together properly, even though I think that’s the one with fillers I wouldn’t say it was a bad job at all.

Second photo looks natural.

People say you can’t tell but you can. (Now hoping it is photo one with the fillers) Grin

@fridpst

Because we have seen so so much of them before, and we know how old they really are, and because so many of them get too much done.

I had Botox and the lines between my brows disappeared. That's all. I can still frown and raise my brows. I don't look younger but that wasn't the intention. I just no longer look scowly and miserable. Nobody has noticed, and in fact when I told a couple of friends, they didn't believe me.

I'm so tickled that people who have never had these procedures nor know for sure who in their circles has had them, are so sure that they'd be experts in spotting it. You go on believing that, guys. Works to my advantage!

fridpst · 12/06/2020 17:12

@circe2020 oh I thought it was because it's not possible to stop the ageing process.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 12/06/2020 17:12

I think the bad things about fillers personally are:

1.The ease of access to untrained administrators. A beauty salon where the person had 2 hours of training is shocking.

  1. The cost and upkeep. Women are taking out loans to keep on top of the 6 monthly top ups.
  1. They get more extreme the more socisty gets used to them. Girls getting more and more put in and at younger ages where once you hit a point of no return its almost impossible to go back to your normal look.
  1. The negative misogynist connotations of blow jobs lips/blow up doll lips/porn star lips. Whatever nickname its all offensive.
Circe2020 · 12/06/2020 17:14

Fair enough Grin

Also filler and botox isnt the same thing so not sure why pp is comparing. People definitely notice if your lips get bigger. Ditto if your nose got smaller people notice. Lack of frownlines not as noticeable.

@MorrisZapp People are generally polite and tend not to comment about Botox to your face and pretend they didn't realise if you tell them - doesn't mean it looks natural!
FatalSecrets · 12/06/2020 17:15

Criticising other women under the guise of "I feel sooooo sorry for you" is a far more worrying trend than what a woman chooses to do with her body.

Circe2020 · 12/06/2020 17:16

Yes agree that there's a lot more subtle botox going on, lip fillers not so much.
