It’s not really AIBU as it’s my opinion but anyway...

I was at work yesterday and a young woman came in and clear as day had lip fillers. I was looking thinking , I can not understand why people pay to have this done. It looks awful.

You can tell straight away that they’ve had fillers

I assume slightly enhancing them can be a positive in some cases, but some just go too far until they look like comedy lips and over do it.

I was just looking thinking, I bet that woman looked more appealing and attractive to the average person with her own, natural lips!

I felt sorry for her that she was thinking that would make her more attractive....

I dread my DD growing up seeing these imagines and finding them beautiful.

It’s down to the individual, I’ve had fillers and Botox, the doctor who does it is expensive but she prides herself on aftercare and a natural appearance, she too has had work but would never have guessed. Just little tweaks to enhance. Only recently had Botox and Dr said I didn’t really need it (she’s put me off for years) I’ll be honest, wasn’t sure it would make much of a difference but love it, had one frown line I wanted to get rid of but just feel fresher and firmer overall, Hubby says I don’t need but it’s just a little confidence boost. Most close friends have had some kind of work done on the sly, it’s not something any of us shout about.

A girl I know was bitching/confiding in me last year that her bf’s ex would rather spends hundreds of his maintenance on ridiculous Fillers/Botox, when she should be spending it on her children, terrible mum, never spends time with her children, looks stupid and fake bla bla bla, Friend would never spend on herself when she could spend that money on her children, didn’t have the heart to tell her I’d had them too 🙈 anyway a few months ago said friend had her lips done, it was all over Snapchat and Facebook ‘love my new lips’ tagged herself with the girl that did them, glowing review. Think the person who did them was a beauty therapist, they were quite obvious and friend was happy, she looked nice, that’s her choice. I did wonder if secretly she might have been a little envious of her BF’s ex.

Noticed that some people love to shout about it and think it’s becoming a modern day wealth marker/status thing, some people like the fake look and if they weren’t obvious then people wouldn’t know they’d spent money on them... might be wrong, just my observation on Social Media.

Some people love them, others hate them, if you don’t like them that’s your choice too.

There are risks and yes having daughters myself I wouldn’t encourage them but it’s something that works for me.

I think done well fillers can enhance what you already have. I think the issue is it can become addictive and that's when you see the overfilled look.

I don't believe natural looking fillers are immediately distinguishable from naturally full lips either.

I didn't realise this was a thing. I don't really understand it either as surely most people can access credit cards &/or plans?

I saw an article the other day with Trisha Goddard talking about the Keith Lemon/Bo' Selecta stuff and I found it interesting when she said It was the big lips, and all the things that every black child has been bullied about.

Genuine question to those out there who are more knowledgeable about this than me - why are big lips are considered attractive on white women but used as a racial slur towards black women? Is this just another form of everyday racism do you think?

DarkUnicorn · 13/06/2020 10:42

Never thought about this, good point.

My friend is Caucasian with naturally fuller lips and got comments at school, she is stunning so put it down to the boys trying to get attention from her.

The fillers are advertised along the lines of ‘ as we age we lose collagen and elastin, the fuller lips are a sign of youth’ ... supposedly.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/06/2020 10:42

Genuine question to those out there who are more knowledgeable about this than me - why are big lips are considered attractive on white women but used as a racial slur towards black women? It most likely is racism though I went to school with a white girl she was bullied relentlessly for having big full lips.
Personally I think they look much better on black women more natural.
My niece was trying to say her friends were bigger, yes they are but there natural.
Ireland is racist I've read so many stories lately though in my niece's and friends daughter's groups everyone mixes they are envious of their black friends lips and bum in a kind way.

mungrymutt · 13/06/2020 10:46

Some argue it's cultural appropriation, a white person who injects her lips & butt & sculpts her waist & darkens her skin with a filter (blackfishing) a kind of Barbie vision of black identity & still gets to keep her white privilege. Lots of celebs play up to this, look at Ariana Grande & how she is ambiguous

However I remember one of my good friends dad (black) would say (20 yrs ago) that mixed race would become the future & the most desired look. I think he did this in part to build up her confidence but I think he may have had a point.

They are always obvious- as obvious as fake nails. People who have then and think no one will tell, you are deluding yourself- people just won’t tell you!
Yes so do feel sorry for the person because I think why are they doing it? Especially younger women. To feel better about how they look? To fit in? Because they have seen influencers or friends and they want to be like them? Because they don’t like their natural lips? Why does society have to make women so unhappy with their facial features that they need to inject something into them in their 20’s? Really sad that this is ok and normal IMO

FabulouslyElegantTits · 13/06/2020 10:53

Interesting @mungrymutt 👍🏻

Titsywoo · 13/06/2020 10:54

I think it can be hard to tell from a photo tbh. People who have had lip fillers fairly subtley still look like they are slightly pouting their lips all the time which is what gives it away for me. So some of the pics on here I would say yes they look filled but it could be someone pouting for the camera.

mungrymutt · 13/06/2020 10:59

@FabulouslyElegantTits I'm by no means an expert this is just based on convos over the years with friends.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/06/2020 11:00

@mungrymutt Your friends dad was very wise.

bushhbb · 13/06/2020 11:01

When you get fillers, the excessive ones in particular, you get these lines around the corners of the mouth. Looks like a permanent pout. I've never once seen this on a black woman or anyone with naturally full lips.

mungrymutt · 13/06/2020 11:08

@EmeraldShamrock he really was! So many things he said we would be like err ok but he was absolutely right I just didn't understand it.

peaceanddove · 13/06/2020 11:15

@Hermanhessescat

Not read all the thread. I was looking at an old school photo on facebook the other day. Early 80s and we were probably 13/14. It was noticeable how different we looked. All shapes and sizes, hairstyles long and short, curly and straight. Quite a few obvious home perms too Grin. All looked their ages. Fast forward 20 odd years looking at ds1's class photo and there's a certain look on all the girls, no funky short hair styles, quirkiness, just long hair, glamorous, perfect looking. Most looked a couple of years older. Just thought it was quite sad really.
Yes I see this with my teenage DD and get friends. I often can't tell her friends apart as they're so homogeneous with their long straight hair, no fringe, perfect eyebrows and eyeliner flicks.
EmeraldShamrock · 13/06/2020 11:16

@mungrymutt He sounds lovely. Smile
I'm actually shocked by the Ariana's photo comparison I assumed she was genuinely dark skinned.

mungrymutt · 13/06/2020 11:18

She's Italian with a fondness for a spray tan 😁

Raaaa · 13/06/2020 11:21

My opinion is I don't think they make people look any better, my DD nursery teacher is a young girl very attractive and has these balloon lips

Yes.
PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/06/2020 11:32

Michelle Keegan looks better with them imo.Its not going over the top that makes it look natural.

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 13/06/2020 11:34

This is what I mean

To feel sorry for woman who believe their lip fillers make them more attractive??
PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/06/2020 11:34

Weird name change for some reason

blosstree · 13/06/2020 11:44

I know she denies it but I think Michelle Keegan has had other work done which has made more of a difference to her face than her lips being done.

vikingwife · 13/06/2020 11:44

There is a difference between above girl having literally no top lip & correcting it so she had one, to having 2 lips & plumping them up like balloons.

The above to me is more corrective as having one lip may make it impossible to ever wear lipstick, maybe other oral issues ?

I find Ariana Grande problematic & think Pete Davidson was a legend to call her out on her basically blackfacing. She has also had work done. I am glad did not have children so they would not idolise these people.

vikingwife · 13/06/2020 11:46

Also she is not just Italian with a spray tan. Who gets a spray tan & comes out that colour. She must be tearing through her Egyptian cotton sheets with that level of tan.
