To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

Eating meat (I'm not a vegan)

the dairy industry

Single use plastic, or most plastic in fact

Fast fashion

Zoos

Aquariums with mammals

Consumerism

The eco conscious few will become to masses. It'll be frowned upon, or seen as lower class for any of the above.
I guess the world will be a better place in some aspects but otherwise it'll be harder for the poor as it'll be another thing for them to be looked down upon for.

@Alsohuman you are scared of your face without make up. Why?

I go for months and months without wearing make up. I would say that I put on make up about once a year, as sometimes it is fun to olay with it.

Make up was originally brought in, to tell women that they are not beautiful. That they need to be painted and covered up. Believing this lie, that we are ugly and disgusting without make up, is what keeps the make up industry going.

Why don't men wear make up?

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 20:38

Porn is the biggest one that I am so disgusted and frustrated about in this generation. There are so many videos showing violence and abuse to women. This completely warps how men view women. It leads to violence and rapes against women.

Ted Bundy said he started murdering women after watching hardcore porn for example . And there was a rape case near me, where the man said he thought it was ok to treat her like that, because he had seen it in porn

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 20:39

Another thing I was thinking about. We have had black people rise up for their rights recently, causing huge structural change in the USA.

Will we women be next. I would love to protest for our rights and cause real change. Number 1) get porn regulated

Women wore makeup in ancient Egypt, so did men. Ever seen Tutankhamen’s death mask? You’re entirely wrong about its function.

I’m old. I look ancient without makeup, why wouldn’t I want to look better? You do you, I’ll do me.

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 20:46

@alsohuman why don't men wear make up NOW. I am suspicious of anything aimed at one gender. I work with a woman in her twenties, who told me that she is scared to leave her house without make up.

Yes, wear it if you want. But when you start to hear lots of women saying they would be terrified to leave their house without it, how can it be good for them! Lots of men do not like it either. I have had loads of men say to me that they much prefer women without make up. That natural is best.

Alsohuman · 11/06/2020 20:51

I don’t do it for men. I do it for me.

Do you not find it somewhat illogical that you rubbish make up on feminist grounds then add that a lot of men don’t like it? Who gives a fuck what men like?

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 21:01

@alsohuman because a lot of make up exists, only for the reason of making women look more sexually attractive to men. Look it up!

One examples - make up companies make red lipstick for women, specifically to remind men of aroused vaginal lips

Alsohuman · 11/06/2020 21:03

because a lot of make up exists, only for the reason of making women look more sexually attractive to men. Look it up!

Oh do make up your mind! You said a minute ago men don’t like it. I’m pretty sure I know more about the origins of cosmetics than you do, given that it’s been one of my passions for 50 years.

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 21:03

And I didn't rubbish make up on feminist grounds.

I said they are companies that make huge profit, by telling women that they are ugly

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 21:04

@Alsohuman what are you on about?

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 21:06

I said both things-

Make up companies say to women that they are ugly, and they also say that women are more sexually attractive to men.

And I also said, that I have met many men over the years who do not like it at all.

So the make up industry is a con all round

Alsohuman · 11/06/2020 21:06

If you can’t even keep track of your own argument this is pretty pointless. Have a good evening.

@Alsohuman it is a bit arrogant of you to take this personally. I don't give a crap what you do.

I said if women want to wear it fine. But no woman should be terrified to leave the house without it. And i have met many women who have said that. They would literally be scared to leave the house without it

I don't really expect people to be much different so I imagine much of what we frown on before will be similarly frowned on later like misuse and maldistribution of resources, particularly food and other essentials.

why don't men wear make up NOW.
In Western Europe and many of their former colonies, because of various events in the late 18th through the 19th century, including upper class women copying what was then commonly men adornments (particularly heels and certain clothes) which then, as things go, went down the classes causing mixed responses, taxes being put on things like powdered wigs, and various revolts against the wealthy and decadence encouraged many men in power to take more plain, utilitarian appearances that still remains. Why it did not have a similar effect on women's clothing is still largely up for debate, but many of them probably didn't have room to profit from recommending and being seen in utilitarian clothing while still selling more expensive materials.

Do you think our great grandparents would scorn us?
The one I knew didn't seem particularly bothered by much we did, she was just happy that she had succeeding in getting out of her childhood circumstances and helping her own have a better life than she had. I think she would raise an eyebrow that her great-great grandson has an interest in farming (she didn't even like gardening), as she worked very hard to get out of it. I know of others who have older relatives who get on them about wasting the greater opportunities they have, but nothing I would call scorn - though probably some have kin who would.

I assume any direct descendants of mine interested enough in family history to look back will frown that the family tree is sparsely recorded and confusing - too many changed our names, immigration, and connections with some weird organizations that are just never really explained in what little is left. Maybe they'll be disappointed or really happy I left the US. On a societal level, I assume that any such history probably won't focus much on people of my social standing much as I wouldn't look at the ills of 100-200 years ago and focus on subsistence farmers. I don't think people will be very different, and what is different will likely be beyond my imagination.

The trans lobby. OJ Simpson and all the ways that justice is bought. Probably amazement that the right to free speech used to supersede the right to be offended.

Society not accepting or catering for people with disabilities

Sophiafour · 11/06/2020 21:58

If you haven't already seen it, and it's still on Netflix, then the Canadian TV series "Travelers" gives a pretty damning forecast of what we'll be despised for in the future. Yes, there are science fiction elements, but don't let that put you off.
