To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

Wealth inequality and the fact we go along with a shitshow of an economic system because 'thats what people want'.

History is a process of gradual liberalisation of rights followed by backlash over and over.

BristolProud · 11/06/2020 22:25

Racism

FrugiFan · 11/06/2020 22:32

Not allowing euthanasia. I think that clinics like dignitas will become more common as we become able to prolong lives which ought not to be prolonged. People from our generation who have watched older relatives become a shadow of their former self due to dementia/stroke/other are likely to want to have an alternative.

Cheap airlines allowing every man and his dog to fly around the world for a few £

Sweatshops and child labour

The old way of Living your whole life in one small box, in one country, paying a mortgage your whole life is a ridiculous way to live. It is not natural

That is an interesting way of living and I admit it sounds very attractive. Do you not have children? It sounds like you do not have to worry about their education. Nor does it sound like you have to worry about money much, or the resources that it buys. I can't see it being applicable to all, not unless it comes with free distribution of food and housing guaranteed under a world government.

Another prediction I have for 100 years in the future judging on current trends. Women will be breeding slaves, and men and the few upper class women they accept will laugh at the idea that they should ever have the rights to bodily autonomy. Depressing, but we're going backwards.

cremuel · 11/06/2020 22:39

Being so appalled at slavery (rightly so) but at the same time having an economy that’s based on manufacturing in developing nations in conditions that are not much better than slavery. I think this will be seen as hypocritical and bizarre that we did not see the contradiction.

The erosion of the rights of women and the prevalence of extreme pornography.

The standard of the press and the fact that it is owned by so few people.

Not being vegan.

Of course, this is all assuming we’re moving towards a more enlightened place, which is definitely not a given. Maybe people of the future will be amazed at the weird aberration of the late 20th / early 21st century where women came close to equality, before they were firmly put back in their box again. Aghhh, I hope not.

Pepperwort · 11/06/2020 22:39

I should probably have linked @Annamaria14 into that directly.

cremuel · 11/06/2020 22:40

Ha. Depressing crosspost with @Pepperwort.

Pepperwort · 11/06/2020 22:43

I hope this is the 'fools never differ' aspect of the old saying!

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 22:50

@Pepperwort I don't have children. You mentioned about money. Working remotely - it would cost me more to live in the UK full time, then it costs me to change country every month. With air b and b / hotels there are no bills and council tax. I currently work online and change country every month

Annamaria14 · 11/06/2020 22:51

Last year I lived in 12 countries

Giving away women's rights that previous generations fought so hard for.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 11/06/2020 22:53

Disposable nappies
Eating meat and the (current) dairy industry
Plastic bags

FizzyGreenWater · 11/06/2020 22:54

Transactivist misogyny and associated erosion of women's rights and child abuse - the detransitioning has already started.

Extreme porn

Climate apathy

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 11/06/2020 22:56

Oh and balloons, and most single use plastic in general

Pepperwort · 11/06/2020 23:01

Sounds lovely while you have no ties. If we all did that though I wonder how long any form of public service or even group organisation, starting with distributing water and food, could last, without taxation to fund it. It could not work for many people. Or it would be a world run by private companies functioning as national governments and you'd have to be tied to one of those.

NameChangeForThisOneToday · 11/06/2020 23:01

Medicating people for mental health problems

Seeing someone as 'ill' and putting them in hospital because they've had a shit life and suffered endless trauma.

Locking up offenders rather than helping them

Putting kids in multiple 'care' homes, moving them from foster carer to foster carer.

indemMUND · 11/06/2020 23:06

To be honest I hope that the descendants of the ridiculously entitled, selfish morons so recklessly abundant now can actually pick a real reason to look down on society at this point from a truly civilised point of view. The way so many people act and behave so mindlessly and pass that on to their kids gives us a pretty dim view of future generations. I do hope that some of the very real issues now actually make an impact large enough to resound through ongoing history. I'm an avid historian and in an ideal world I'd like to think that people nowadays can learn from the past. I feel it's doubtful now watching people devolve into what affects them only and what they deem important. Sad state of affairs given how far we've come.

TeacupDrama · 11/06/2020 23:14

many people can't see wood for the trees as to what we think is right now may not be right in a few years
the world rarely exists as simply as the oppressed and the oppressor but lots of people are both both now and historically the world is not neatly divided into good and bad people good and bad philosophies, balance is hard as it requires thought, time, effort, reflection and nuance and extremeism easy as it has a few simple rules no thought required as it has been done for you and here's a few sound bites to reassure you
A black man may be oppressed because of his skin colour and in turn oppresses women
A white woman may do much for womens rights like so many of the suffragettes but have very racist views
Some one like the Irish or Scottish crofter is driven from their ancestral home and forced to go elsewhere , but when they arrive elsewhere they then deprive, drive the native people s from their land without somehow connecting the two,
Being topical how many crofters driven out of Sutherland by the Duke of Sutherland ( they have been trying to get rid of his staue for years too) arrived in America and proceeded to drive Native Americans off the prairies in the mid west to stake homesteads
Some new ideas like eugenics did take off briefly as a new better way by some proponents but it was swiftly rejected and in a few decades was seen as abhorent, other ideas took centuries to be seen as abhorent, some changes recently will be seen positively in the future other may be seen as a horrible abherration like eugenics
Personally I think allowing children and young teenagers to change their bodies irreversibly and rendering themselves permanently infertile for a decision they made at 13 without a full risk assessment knowing the teenage mind was not fully mature will be seen as horrendous child abuse and irrational (when at the same time tattooos on minors was illegal) and will be subject to a huge number of legal cases in the future a bit like child abuse at orphanges and thalidomide rolled into one

Dylaninthemovies1 · 11/06/2020 23:18

So.. quite a few people have touched on eradication of womens rights. Do you really think that’s a thing these days? I genuinely thought that this is the best time (so far) to be a woman. I know it’s not perfect, but better than previous generations had it.

Also, a lot of people commenting on eating meat:dairy. Are many of you vegan? I’ve not eaten meat for 26 years, but don’t imagine society will ever turn away from eating meat

Smacking children as a way to discipline

Dylaninthemovies1 · 11/06/2020 23:28

Weary... no, I’m not.

These days it’s illegal to discriminate in the workplace based on sex. Woman have the right to vote, drive, buy property, in fact, all the rights men have. It’s no longer legal to rape your wife. It’s not perfect, not by a long shot, but it’s a lot better than previous generations had it
