To wonder what happens in society now that will be frowned upon by our descendants

There is lots of things our ancestors did in the past that we quite rightly think are morally reprehensible.

I’m wondering how history will judge us! What things will our descendants judge us for?

I’m thinking:
Destroying the environment
People in 3rd world country making our clothes for peanuts

Mainly the older generation it has to be said........people of my age and younger were appalled. Because our generation are fighting back ^And we won't stand for that sort of nonsense^
Quite right too!!!

sessell · 12/06/2020 10:42

Eating meat - environmental and health catastrophy.
Long-distance business travel.
Chemotherapy
Poorly insulated housing
Cheap disposable plastic and fashion

Annamaria14 · 12/06/2020 11:13

Women need to rise up for our rights next on a huge scale.

I was talking to my friend in the USA. He said there is a lot of racism there as we all now. But he said if you are found out to be racist there are serious consequences. Like you could lose your job. He said that on other hand, if you are sexist in the USA, no one bata an eyelid. That everywhere tells you it is totally fine to treat women as "being worth less".

Anyone starting a protest yet?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 13/06/2020 07:45

Screwing over the younger generation.
10 yrars ago I was 25 and working full time as a teacher. I had no savings and £1000s in student debt. My mum, enjoying early retirement, playing sport every day and owning 3 houses and 2 cars, had just got a free bus pass. At my age, on just her wage as a teacher, she had bought a house and paid for a wedding.
Those 5 years younger than me had more debt as student fees had tripled.
And look what we're doing to young people now.

lljkk · 13/06/2020 08:04

things things will somewhat confuse everyone in 200 years...

That we let climate change happen.

Social inequalities, how did sweet little children turn in to criminals, why didn't we understand how to stop that.

child abuse in homes, why didn't we do more to stop that.

Substance abuse & addiction in general, public drunken-ness; our norms now will be considered barbaric.

Poor support for people with severe mental health problems: we'll be considered very unenlightened & primitive about depression & psychosis.

Private polluting cars everywhere and high road traffic accident rates will be considered bizarre.

Our current hygiene habits will be considered very unacceptable by 2122, never mind 2222.

I agree about public drunkenness but I don’t know how addiction/alcoholism will be stopped. Billions have been poured into looking for a cure or prevention of this most destructive condition with no success whatsoever.
Of course in the future a solution may come up which would remove all sorts of suffering both from the addict and those close to him/her.

Considering half of MN bleaches the shit out of everything, it’s difficult to see how much more extreme hygiene could get. Unless you mean that it will be recognised that excessive cleanliness creates allergies and future generations will revert to a more relaxed approach.

lljkk · 13/06/2020 11:40

I hope you're right, AlsoH, and that in general future people become more risk tolerant than now and see healthy immune systems as ones that have encountered germs. But the trend over time seems to be to become much less tolerant of any type of risks, in every single area of life. My guess is that that trend will continue.

Kazzyhoward · 13/06/2020 12:42

Considering half of MN bleaches the shit out of everything, it’s difficult to see how much more extreme hygiene could get.

That's because the other half don't give a shit about personal hygiene, can't be arsed to wash their hands properly, too lazy to catch coughs/sneezes, etc.

If people observed simple hygiene and cleanliness, we wouldn't be where we are now in the middle of a pandemic.

Kazzyhoward · 13/06/2020 12:44

Screwing over the younger generation.

We did far worse with both WW1 and WW2 where millions of "younger generation" were sent off to fight, many never coming home, and then those who did survive had a pretty austere life when they returned and we still had rationing, etc., not to mention national service continuing for many years after WW2.

Devlesko · 13/06/2020 12:46

Removing history and rewriting it, will be a biggie.

Wrong. A few of the other half perhaps. Most manage to wash their hands and sneeze into a tissue. What they don’t do is wash everything after one use, get through a bottle of bleach a week and treat shoes and animals as if they’re hotbeds of infection, all at the expense of the planet.
YeOldeTrout · 13/06/2020 13:40

I predict that fake news & misinformation is gonna be worse than ever in future. Lots of fabricated videos of political leaders doing terrible things, for instance. Possibly blatent two+ tier levels of citizenship in most countries, and strict limits on how much material wealth the 2nd class citizens are allowed. Where richer & more powerful people have more rights & power & the masses have less civil rights but are told their compensation is a welfare safety net in spite of their feckless ways.

I agree with you. I'm gobsmacked at the amount of bleach some posters use. Do they know where it goes - into the water cycle.
They can't be that stupid, can they ???

I know industrial use of chemicals is far far worse but we've got to make an effort ourselves for future generations - for our children and grandchildren.

A wipe for this and a wipe for that - give me strength!!!!

Transphobia

Hopefully exploitative Capitalism

Tolerance of religious cultism. Religiosity will be treated as a delusional illness.

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 15/06/2020 16:01

Sterilising and mutilating gay or gender dysphoric children and teenagers.
Recording trans identifying male crimes as female crimes.
Prostitution.
Surrogacy.
Eating meat.

IrmaFayLear · 15/06/2020 16:02

But there’s another kind of delusional cultism now: social media. People blindly following the herd and being desperate to be seen to be in with the latest thing.

Last night I watched the documentary on the Jim Jones cult and was musing on why cults were out of fashion (when I was young in the 80s we even had school assemblies warning about the danger of cults) and then it dawned on me that today you don’t have to leave your bedroom to join a particular tribe.

I recommended the Jones cult film (netflix I think) to my sons who thought it was very good. I think it is important teenagers watch things like that and keep independent thought.

Alsohuman · 15/06/2020 16:54

It’s lasted millennia across virtually every culture so I very much doubt that. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went the other way.
