That Eddie Redmayne is a self serving privileged prick?

Where was he when he took the part in the Danish Girl that could have gone to a trans woman and elevated an actor who otherwise has no options open to them? AIBU in thinking Eddie Redmayne is jumping on a misogynistic bandwagon when he doesn’t actually give a shit about trans people or their rights?

FWIW I do believe there’s a world where women’s rights and trans rights can live side by side and support each other but it speaks volumes that the cis-rich-White-Male-heterosexual parade comes out and tries to antagonise a situation between two social groups that their particular social
Group has oppressed and abused and dehumanised and humiliated for thousands of years? Daniel Radcliffe is no better - his response to the original JKR tweet even only refers to transwomen and doesn’t even mention transmen!!!

They say they all need to just listen and be educated when it comes to racism but when it comes to feminism they tell women to sit down and shut up while they mansplain and admonish, fuck them

I’m glad he stood up to JKR on her comments but I agree that it was totally inappropriate for him to be cast in the Danish Girl when they could have actually had someone trans play the part.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/06/2020 08:21

COVID-19 affected men and women differently yet JK Rowling is wrong for saying biological sex is real. Tell that to the scientist trying to unpick the sex based differences to the virus response.

It’s OK the blokes have stepped in and told us women that our concerns don’t matter.

TheMandalorian · 11/06/2020 08:22

They're thespians dahling! What actual life experience do they have? One of them barely has any schooling. They are immersed in that liberal artsy culture.
They are just drumming up a bit of publicity for themselves whilst (I would hope unknowingly) simultaneously throwing JK under a bus.
It's the whole trope of has-been actors becoming figurehead saviours of third world countries.

Or at the very least, someone Danish.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/06/2020 08:26

J K Rowling has presented a reasoned, carefully argued 3,000 word essay in which she develops and defends her points.

Redmayne has regurgitated the latest woke hashtags so as not to alienate his fanbase.

There's no comparison.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/06/2020 08:30

I’m glad he stood up to JKR on her comments

Her comments that women menstruate? Yeah, I can see why we need someone to stand up to her over that. How very dare she.

TheNavigator · 11/06/2020 08:30

Redmayne and Radcliffe just spout somebody elses words, I don't know why they think their opinion is so important they have to share it with the world.

I find Radcliffe more galling - he literally became rich and famous because of JKR. He is just an average actor who struck lucky. JKR wrote the damn books, without her he would just be an ordinary bloke. Talk about a complete lack of self-knowledge, humility and gratitude.

derxa · 11/06/2020 08:39

Redmayne and Radcliffe just spout somebody elses words, I don't know why they think their opinion is so important they have to share it with the world. I'm utterly sick of actors spouting their 'views'. Make it stop.

JKR's comments that trans lives matter, or that genuine trans people should be protected?
I'm genuinely curious

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2020 08:42

Amazing how all these men need to speak out against this brave woman speaking about periods but when women are raped, murdered, mutilated, trafficked, married off as children, denied basic healthcare there is radio silence. Funny that.

NearlyGranny · 11/06/2020 08:43

So, would you only cast real witches and wizards for those roles in the HP films, too? It's called acting for a reason!

I think it's really rude for actors to apologise on behalf of an author who knows her mind and has defended her position, too.

Soontobe60 · 11/06/2020 08:46

Which comments are you referring to?
NotTerfNorCis · 11/06/2020 08:47

The hate and antagonism coming from the TRAs is horrible to watch. No wonder Redmayne and Radcliffe picked that side, where they're safe from abuse.

Ultimately this is an argument between people who believe we are male or female based on our biological sex, and people who believe male and female is a state of mind. It should be possible to have this debate without all the violent hatred radiating from one side.

HandsOffMyRights · 11/06/2020 08:49

Men telling women how to behave again?

YANBU. He's a prick and JK has 5 decades of experiencing sex based oppression.

Woman is not a costume Eddie.

Which of her comments required "standing up" to? The one saying women menstruate? Is that incorrect? I must admit I pissed around a lot in biology at school but I think even I understood this basic premise.

Pertella · 11/06/2020 08:56

If we accept that 'only women have periods' is transphobic then it would be transphobic towards transmen.

So why are Redmayne and Radcliffe taking about transwomen? Have they even mentioned transmen?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 11/06/2020 08:56

I’m glad he stood up to JKR on her comments

The comments. People who menstruate are called women. Oh, and same-sex attraction exists.

I thought we'd left opposition to these behind decades ago, particularly the second part. Clearly not. Misogyny, homophobia and bigotry not only rife and openly displayed but used to collect woke points and applause from those who somehow see themselves as liberal. What has happened?

Flapjak · 11/06/2020 08:58

Whats galling is these men telling women that trans women are women, end of. No discussion on what that statement means for actual women. I am finding the double standards of the 'liberal elite males' vomit inducing. Whist they are happy to own their white privilidge and be educated etc etc, in regards to racism, they do not ever state they have male priviledge and need to educate themselves about sexism and misogny .

Theluggage15 · 11/06/2020 08:59

So much aggression and violence in the comments on JK’s Twitter account, I mean, come on, it’s there for everyone to see, no wonder so many women are extremely worried about trans rights. Just look at what they say when someone makes a perfectly reasonable point. It’s frightening.

And as for the patronising twaddle from those actors, especially Radcliffe whose success is down to JK Rowling, words fail me.

Dozer · 11/06/2020 08:59

Didn’t like his tweet.

On PP’s point, disagree that only trans actors should play trans parts.

DressingGownofDoom · 11/06/2020 08:59

Thank you ever so much to Daniel and Eddie for mansplaining our feminist concerns from their rich white male privileged positions. But just FYI, our women's rights aren't men's to give away.

MaeDanvers · 11/06/2020 08:59

@ShiveringCoyote

Yes, agreed. I think there is a certain type of man who quite enjoys giving women a kicking over trans issues. And I don't see many trans women telling them to take a seat because they are not women or trans women.
MMN123 · 11/06/2020 09:00

JK Rowling has spoken clearly and eloquently and she has said nothing to justify the negative responses she has received. Harry, Hermione and Ginny have come across as grabby little has-beens trying to self-promote by jumping on the nearest woke bandwagon without an iota of depth to their thinking. Youth and stupidity perhaps. But young women have been brainwashing into thinking all women no longer need protection from men. Long may their blissful ignorance continue. In the meantime it’s good to see that the older generation of women like Rowling have the insight and courage to speak out. Once our protections have been taken they won’t be easily won back. And they are being taken.
