That Eddie Redmayne is a self serving privileged prick?

Where was he when he took the part in the Danish Girl that could have gone to a trans woman and elevated an actor who otherwise has no options open to them? AIBU in thinking Eddie Redmayne is jumping on a misogynistic bandwagon when he doesn’t actually give a shit about trans people or their rights?

FWIW I do believe there’s a world where women’s rights and trans rights can live side by side and support each other but it speaks volumes that the cis-rich-White-Male-heterosexual parade comes out and tries to antagonise a situation between two social groups that their particular social
Group has oppressed and abused and dehumanised and humiliated for thousands of years? Daniel Radcliffe is no better - his response to the original JKR tweet even only refers to transwomen and doesn’t even mention transmen!!!

They say they all need to just listen and be educated when it comes to racism but when it comes to feminism they tell women to sit down and shut up while they mansplain and admonish, fuck them

I am a woman who has chosen not to have periods since I was 30, now 58 and will never have another one, I am lucky to live in a country where I had that option, I have never had to wash old rags every month, or remove my filthy self from my home every month, I havent had to worry about the smell of blood following me around because my genitals have been mutilated, I have never been in fear of finding a safe place to go in the night to change my rag without being raped/assulted.

I am a woman and no man will tell me otherwise.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 11/06/2020 09:53

"would you only cast real witches and wizards for those roles in the HP films, too? It's called acting for a reason!"
Good point. Otherwise we'd have to have only murderers and paedophiles playing those parts in crime dramas. Only real spies playing James Bond or Jason Bourne. Utterly mad argument. You'd have to do away with all the awards ceremonies as there wouldn't be any great actors if they were all pretty much playing themselves.

Fluffybutter · 11/06/2020 09:53

A lot of these actors/ actresses have gone down in my estimations .
It’s like they’re blind to what she is actually saying and just trying to be seen as “woke” so they won’t lose money or work ..
So quick to turn

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/06/2020 09:53

YANBU, but why wouldn't he be? He's a celebrity. I would think being a self-serving prick is the rule rather than the exception.

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2020 09:56

It truly is glorious. Women seem to dread the menopause because as is frequently touted when its anything to do with female reproductive systems, it's bad and icky and everyone suffers from the hormonal monster.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/06/2020 09:57

Personally I've gone right off Eddie Redmayne and all the other thesps who are clearly just thinking about their careers.Jumping on the bandwagon.

TBQH for all that Laurence Fox has issues, I'm beginning to quite admire his 'tell it is as it is' approach. At least he is putting his head above the parapet (as with JK).

We are seeing free speech censored in a way that is frightening and dystopian. Wake up and smell the coffee.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 11/06/2020 09:57

A lot of these actors/ actresses have gone down in my estimations.

Not only is acting being what you aren't. It is reading out words written for you by someone else.

CaveMum · 11/06/2020 09:58

Men telling women how to “woman” correctly, how original of them.

I’d have far more respect for them if they said “I do not agree with JKR’s views on this issue, but the abuse she has been subjected to is indefensible.”

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/06/2020 09:58

I remember my mum getting angry a lot, but that too was glorious as it was always about stuff that she had every right to be pissed off about.

ChattyLion · 11/06/2020 09:59

Absolutely agree with your OP, OP. Well said. Misogynists and where to find them..

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 11/06/2020 10:02

I thoroughly recommend the film, Stage Beauty, in which a star of the restoration London stage who plays female parts educates his wardrobe mistress who aspires to acting herself. He patiently shows her how to act woman, the correct gestures and postures etc.

Billy Crudup and Claire Danes, both superb.

Boulshired · 11/06/2020 10:04

The Eddie Redmayne acting in the Danish girl could well be deemed offensive in years to come as it will be viewed in a different lens. There is anger in some areas of the US with non African Americans playing slave roles especially Black British. Eddie could be issuing his own apologies soon.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/06/2020 10:05

YesDifficultPifcultwe are for real. Have you seen how much abuse people get for not towing the party line? Case in point : JK Rowling.

Have you seen how much abuse transgender people, and anyone who supports them gets also.

It's not all one sided.

Of course any threats, abuse and harassment transgender people and the people who love and support them is null and void because - "look what some trans activists have done, it's so much worse".

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 10:07

Lemon you need to have an honest and thorough look around and actually educate yourself.

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2020 10:07

Women are conditioned that anger is not womanly. We must always be kind and polite and put everyone before ourselves. If anything this media response to JKR thing is making women angry which is a good thing. We need to rage and demand. The Be Kind conditioning only benefits men and grinds down women.

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 10:07

Yes. ‘Be kind’ = get back in your cage.

Carriemac · 11/06/2020 10:08

self serving smug talentless prick

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/06/2020 10:09

Lemonyou need to have an honest and thorough look around and actually educate yourself.

Grin do you want try and be more patronising?

Just because my experience and views differ, it doesn't mean I'm not educated. Thanks for the advice though Grin

FFSFFSFFS · 11/06/2020 10:10

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult - well yes - no one denies that transgender are subject to awful abuse. JKR specifically refers to this.

But the abuse is coming from violent men. Not from people seeking to protect the rights of women and girls.

The problem is male violence. Why is no one focussing on stopping male violence?

OliveKitteridgeAgain · 11/06/2020 10:10

So, in the menstruation argument don't talk for me as a menopausal woman - I'll speak for myself if I'm annoyed and I'm more annoyed at being patronised by people who think they are allowed to use my menopausal status as an argument against facts thanks.

Hear hear. JKR is 55, and presumably is menopausal or peri-menopausal. She knows damn well she is a woman. And all the misogynists attacking her enjoy using her age against her, so please, spare us these spurious straw men arguments.

Here you go. This is what she said, and this is how the poor oppressed trans lobby respond.

All Broadway productions of Oliver! written by a jewish composer, feature a conspicuously non-jewish Fagin, so as not to offend.

Also, Johnathan Pryce was banned from taking his rMiss Saigon ole from the West End to Broadway because American Equity insisted that a Frenchman with some Indochinese ancestry had to be played by an Asian-American.

LochJessMonster · 11/06/2020 10:12

Interesting that no one is allowed to have their own opinion or disagree with the ‘goddess’ that is JK Rowling, without being ungrateful or self serving.

Most of the comments about DR are focussing on the fact that JK Rowling ‘gave him a career’- like that means he is not allowed to ever disagree with her.
And ER did a lot of research and meet ups with the trans community so it is obviously something that has stuck with him and means something to him.

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2020 10:12

Lemon yes that's very evident by all the "suck my dick" replies to JKR.

Onemorefuck · 11/06/2020 10:13

What I really disagree with is that everyone is talking about how Daniel Radcliffe and Eddie Redmayne have spoken up about JK Rowlings comments.
Once again - anything a woman says needs to be validated or condemned by a man to be more relevant.
JK Rowling is more than capable of having her own views and expressing them without anyone else juxtaposing/supporting to give their views.

StandWithYou · 11/06/2020 10:13

@LondonJax

I must admit I'm getting fed up with the 'oh JKR has alienated all those women who are in their menopause or have had an hysterectomy'. I'm almost 60. I don't menstruate anymore, haven't for about 10 years. My friend had her womb removed 15 years ago. I spoke to her about this last night and she said 'no I don't feel alienated by JKR's comments - in 1000 years, if they found my skeleton and had a debate about whether I may have menstruated, the answer would be yes. Because I have a female skeleton. They'd never tell if I had a hysterectomy, my age at death wouldn't matter. They'd look at the skeleton and say - yep odds on this person had a period at some stage in their life'.

They wouldn't look at my husband's skeleton and think the same - but that doesn't preclude him from being a transwoman. It doesn't preclude my niece from being a transman. It just means their bones tell a different story with regard to menstruating. That's just sex vs gender.

So, in the menstruation argument don't talk for me as a menopausal woman - I'll speak for myself if I'm annoyed and I'm more annoyed at being patronised by people who think they are allowed to use my menopausal status as an argument against facts thanks.

I’m in the same position and I completely agree with this.

I am so mad at white, privileged men telling me what I am and that I should be ‘kind’.
