That Eddie Redmayne is a self serving privileged prick?

Where was he when he took the part in the Danish Girl that could have gone to a trans woman and elevated an actor who otherwise has no options open to them? AIBU in thinking Eddie Redmayne is jumping on a misogynistic bandwagon when he doesn’t actually give a shit about trans people or their rights?

FWIW I do believe there’s a world where women’s rights and trans rights can live side by side and support each other but it speaks volumes that the cis-rich-White-Male-heterosexual parade comes out and tries to antagonise a situation between two social groups that their particular social
Group has oppressed and abused and dehumanised and humiliated for thousands of years? Daniel Radcliffe is no better - his response to the original JKR tweet even only refers to transwomen and doesn’t even mention transmen!!!

They say they all need to just listen and be educated when it comes to racism but when it comes to feminism they tell women to sit down and shut up while they mansplain and admonish, fuck them

What's wrong with JKR's views?

And no it wasn't wrong for him to get cast as trans. That's the whole point of acting, you portray someone you're not.

Dozer · 11/06/2020 09:02

Saying TWAW doesn’t make it true.

No comments from these actors on sports, refuges, prisons, single sex services and facilities, scholarships and business schemes for girls/women, people being categorised in the other sex in crime and other stats.

Nor on self ID meaning that previously single sex facilities and services meaning that all men - not only transwomen - will have access.

cdtaylornats · 11/06/2020 09:06

There are simple questions for trans-rights supporters

What would a postmortem conclude the sex to be?
Would you be comfortable with the trans person supervising your child changing for swimming?
Would you have sex with a trans-person?

Pinkyyy · 11/06/2020 09:06

The whole part of acting is to become a different person/character. Why would we bother having actors if people just played themselves?

Mumfun · 11/06/2020 09:06

Well known that Radcliffe not talented and is hired to put potter fan bums on seats. Completely disloyal and self serving. At least Evanna Lynch stood up for JKR as a person before saying she disagreed and protecting herself by spouting the mantra and saying she needed to educate herself and do better.

Redmayne and Radcliife both self serving privileged rich white male kids who have stood up for the white male group for which the trans movement was originally centred around (see Jane Clare Jones analysis of where original trans data and research came from -eye opening : twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1270632633052127232) I just can not say how despicable and disgusting I think they both are. They have no knowledge of how tough unprivileged women's lives are especially outside Europe and western countries. But they dont care - they just jumo on the MRA bandwagon.

Kljnmw3459 · 11/06/2020 09:07

This is such a strange story that only seems to exist in twitter. I'm only seeing posts about covid, schools and BLM in my social media. Though I did see a tweet someone posted here from JKR and I don't think she's unreasonable or outrageous?

CourtneyLurve · 11/06/2020 09:09

Eddie took a starring role that could have gone to a trans person and his career and reputation haven't been impacted.

Here's Daniel Radcliffe talking about having racist friends:

“I know some really f*king racist people, friends I vehemently disagree with,” actor Daniel Radcliffe recently declared in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter.

“They’re not white supremacists, they would never be that extreme, but they are anti-immigration and absolutely voted to leave in Brexit,” Radcliffe added.

“And I’m still friends with them because I don’t think that friendship should be drawn along those lines.”

Both of them are misogynist hypocrites.

Her comments that women menstruate? Is that the definition of being a woman? So I stopped being a woman when I had a hysterectomy?

Not a great definition.

Luaa · 11/06/2020 09:13

For me, JKR is really summarising how I feel on this issue. I have no problem with trans women or trans men. I have a problem with a man being able to say I am a woman and access female spaces when he has no intention of ever taking any hormones or changing his body in any way. I do not think trans women will be a risk to me and my daughters in a changing room. I do think some men will be.
I do not accept the title cis. If other people people are allowed to define how they are referred to, I should be allowed to choose not to be called cis.
I am concerned how quickly children are pushed down a path that changes their bodies forever.
And it makes me mad that I can't stand up and say that on Twitter for fear of someone complaining to my employer or threatening me, so I appreciate her for using her position to do so and for standing by what she believes.

SarahMcDonald · 11/06/2020 09:15

They say they all need to just listen and be educated when it comes to racism but when it comes to feminism they tell women to sit down and shut up while they mansplain and admonish

This.

Pinkdelight3 · 11/06/2020 09:17

I don't disagree with your general thrust, but the notion that The Danish Girl would have got made with anyone who wasn't already a 'name' in the lead shows total naivety about how films get funded and made. The director had been trying to make TDG for years with no luck given the non-commercial subject matter. It was only after he hit big with Les Mis and got Eddie R attached that it got greenlit. Today even that wouldn't happen as the world has changed and they couldn't cast him in that part anyway so the film just wouldn't get made, or at least not on that scale.

FFSFFSFFS · 11/06/2020 09:17

@1forsorrow

Not all women menstruate but only women can menstruate.

This is the wildly bigoted position JKR took.

If anyone was to be excluded from this it is transmen. However strangely not many people have been mentioning transmen. Its all about transwomen (i.e. the people who were born with penises). It is offensive to exclude them from the group of people who may menstruate.

Pukkatea · 11/06/2020 09:18

They're the lead actors in JKR's two film franchises, they are going to be asked and not answering isn't really an option. For what it's worth, Emma Watson has also said the same as them, it's not just men commenting.

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 09:18

@1forsorrow no that’s not what she said.

Don’t you ever read anything at source for yourself? Are all your opinions and all your reasonings on hugely important issues like this formed from picking up regurgitated nonsense?

InOmniaParatus42 · 11/06/2020 09:20

I've been completely in support of JKR throughout this ridiculous argument, but then a friend sent me this article -massivesci.com/articles/sex-gender-intersex-transgender-identity-discrimination-title-ix/
I always thought sex was binary but gender was a spectrum. This article claims that sex is also a spectrum. Can someone who is wiser than me please explain if this article is correct?
My friend thinks JKR's comments were wrong on the basis of this article.

P. S. I want to be referred to as a woman and not 'someone who menstruates'!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/06/2020 09:21

He stood up to Rowling's comments that only women menstruate and sex based oppression exists, as does sex based attraction? Gosh, I sure am glad that someone told her what's what about all that. Imagine if he hadn't, people might have thought that it was OK for women to have opinions about things that have an impact on their own lives, and that really wouldn't be on at all.

Hmm
Tanith · 11/06/2020 09:21

He's not really. He and the others have to keep their industry sweet or they'll never work again.

What's worrying is that so many people honestly think unqualified actors should have the definitive opinion.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/06/2020 09:22

The article is nonsense, InOmnia. It's like saying "a small number of people are born missing a foot therefore humans are not a bipedal species".

Alyssum34456 · 11/06/2020 09:23

It's depressing.

Pinkdelight3 · 11/06/2020 09:25

*Her comments that women menstruate? Is that the definition of being a woman? So I stopped being a woman when I had a hysterectomy?

Not a great definition.*

I don't get why people flip it to seemingly wilfully misunderstand. Obviously not all women menstruate, but surely she means no 'people' who aren't women menstruate.

(Although, in truth, the 'people who menstruate' thing bothers me less than a lot of these furores, because I'm taking it to mean that some trans-men who still have women's plumbing still menstruate, and I think trans-men tend to get the least recognition of any group in these kinds of debates that take up such a disproportionate amount of airtime).

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2020 09:25

When transwomen bleed from their genitals it is generally a medical emergency. When women bleed from their genitals we get to pay luxury tax for the products.

cheeseismydownfall · 11/06/2020 09:25

Actually I am grateful for them. By taking such an high-profile, unconsidered, nakedly self serving position on this topic they are signposting the women (and men) who previously thought that the TWAW debate was something that didn't effect them towards JKR's detailed exploration of what is at stake here.

Of course, not everyone will bother to read what she actually has to say, in her own words (as demonstrated by a PP). But some will. And it is so important that they do.

Ninkanink · 11/06/2020 09:26

No, sex is not on a spectrum.

There are two sexes, and that is biological fact.

Luaa · 11/06/2020 09:26

1forsorrow that's not what she said. There was something that referred to "people who menstrate" and she pointed out there was a word for those people - women. She didn't at all say women menstrate or you have to menstrate to be a woman.

HipTightOnions · 11/06/2020 09:26

Sex is binary InOmnia

Female - the type of body that produces eggs.
Male - the type of body that produces sperm.

There’s no “in between” gamete. (sperg? spegg?)
