London Demonstrations

Maybe iabu I don't know but I'm so pissed off at all of the photos online of the demonstrations taking place in London today. I know why they are doing it but ffs 15,000 people in a fucking park while we are only allowed to meet in a group of 6.

My kids have just returned to school for 2 days a week in small classes with only a few of their friends, my year 6er is missing everything and should be on a PGL trip this week. My husbands business is going down the drain but 15,000 fucking people can go and mix for a demonstration?

Let's just all wait for two weeks time shall we when the hospitals are busy again and people are screaming that their relatives are dying.

I'm really angry and fed up after seeing the photos, just feel like it's never going to end and we are never going to get away from these restrictions while other people don't give a shit.

@lauriefairycake apologies, a bit emotional about it (DH is an officer on shift today). You're right, i should have linked to a source but doesn't seem to be on mainstream press yes. Very clear pictures on social and a Guardian story. It looks like an officer being punched but the "suspect" had keys in his hand.

A police officer has been stabbed in the face. I consider that incredibly violent.

Do you have a link for this?

I agree it is absolute madness. I know a teacher who went to protest in London yet insists it is too risky for her to go back to work next week. We ended up arguing. Mass gatherings for any reason without adherence to social distancing protocol should equate to many hundred of fines being handed out. It is selfish and irisponsible.

You won’t be happy the day a law is passed decreeing all protests illegal.

I don't see how people attacking the UK police force will help or change anything

Exactly. Completely agree with the horror around George Floyd’s death but cannot support people putting UK police and emergency services at risk during a pandemic.

The protests here are like a litter of fluffy kittens compared to the one's in the US at the moment which would make sense but the issue is pretty much in the US.

Just finished watching a video of police officers in the US tazing then dragging a black man and woman out of a car because they stopped to film the police aggressively arresting another black man. Yes, you can see it from the start where they pull up, film, say something like don't be so heavy handed then the police react with such force. The two people are actually terrified to get out of the car. The police smash the windows of the car and everything

I think detractors should be grateful black people have been willing to talkand not be listened toand have been so incredibly gentle and peaceable for so fucking long

@Marzipancake I don't give a shit about people protesting normally, they can protest till the fucking cows come home but I do give a shit about it in the middle of a pandemic.

@Livelovebehappy Police have a fine line to thread, either way they will be criticised for not doing enough or for being heavy handed and escalating things. Remember they are out there having taking abuse and having people scream in their faces with no PPE. How many of us would be willing to do that job right now?

Report
Ylvamoon · 03/06/2020 20:14

... can we all go back to "normal" now? Kids back to school, people back to work, shops & restaurants open and a last minute Glastonbury?
Because judging by the pictures, nobody cares about the pandemic anymore... let's hope this is still true in 3- 6 weeks time when we run short of intensive care beds and the death toll rises.

nicsknackered · 03/06/2020 20:19

@Ylvamoon my thoughts exactly, the thought of the next few weeks makes me want to cry.

On the news an officer was sitting down on the floor by the van injured, not sure what happened.

Black lives Matter and it’s absolutely fucking disgusting in this day and age people have to go to such lengths to show how much their lives matter, it’s shameful that this is still happening.

I have been that job and would do it again, the best weapon you can have is your voice, have some compassion, understanding and above all treat people the way in which you would want to be treated, in 8 years I never once was assaulted.

ShutUpaYourFace · 03/06/2020 20:30

Agree OP, It is nothing to do with the reason behind the protest. What happened in the USA is disgraceful. BUT We are at a critical point now with covid. What happened to protect the NHS, Save lives? Do the elderly and the vulnerable don't matter any more? Obviously not to all the people out there breaking the rules! Social distancing is out the window. This also applies to all the dicks on the beaches. FFS 10 weeks of lockdown for nothing. It's crazy and irresponsible and selfish.

Shallwedancetomojito · 03/06/2020 20:33

Infact this protest is all okay. As long as they're not having sex in someone else's house, having more than six to a bbq or sharing a school desk with another child. 🙄

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/06/2020 20:34

The violence and aggression just proves to me that some people only go on marches - any old march - because they enjoy confrontation and preferably a ruck with the Old Bill.

Report
cherryblossommorningstoday · 03/06/2020 20:36

In a middle of a pandemic it IS selfish.

BAME communities are more at risk anyway.

I fully support protests in usual times but the pictures are just showing selfishness to the highest degree.

UngodlyScreech · 03/06/2020 20:37

there's no point in social distancing if you're going to be racially profiled and assaulted by the police. black people in this country are hurt by the police regularly, and so far no one in power has really done anything of any use

Report
RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 03/06/2020 20:37

above all treat people the way in which you would want to be treated, in 8 years I never once was assaulted

Although i agree with the first part of your sentence

The fact you weren’t assaulted isn’t necessarily down to the fact that you treated others a certain way

Report
Shallwedancetomojito · 03/06/2020 20:37

Actually this is a Good experiment to see if social distancing does anything. Because Ibet there's no changes in infections, hospitalizations or deaths.

I agree OP, but I try to console myself (as I do with the mass congregations on the beach/parks etc) is that it’s natural selection at its finest.

Its not natural selection at its finest

As the people crowded together may well infect others

So its natural selection at its shittist

It's all over the Irish news here. It looks very violent. Can I ask why they are beating /hitting /throwing things at your police? Is there alot of racism amongst some police?
