London Demonstrations

Maybe iabu I don't know but I'm so pissed off at all of the photos online of the demonstrations taking place in London today. I know why they are doing it but ffs 15,000 people in a fucking park while we are only allowed to meet in a group of 6.

My kids have just returned to school for 2 days a week in small classes with only a few of their friends, my year 6er is missing everything and should be on a PGL trip this week. My husbands business is going down the drain but 15,000 fucking people can go and mix for a demonstration?

Let's just all wait for two weeks time shall we when the hospitals are busy again and people are screaming that their relatives are dying.

I'm really angry and fed up after seeing the photos, just feel like it's never going to end and we are never going to get away from these restrictions while other people don't give a shit.

@1stmonkey

Say it again for the people who can't understand that! Woo girl, I clapped at your comment!

edwinbear · 03/06/2020 20:45

Yes, of course the risk of them infecting others is desperately worrying but personally, (and I live in London), I will be going back down into lockdown for the next few weeks because I really fear a second wave now. Many of my London based friends and colleagues feel the same after today’s events.

MamaLion1319 · 03/06/2020 20:48

@woodmarsh
Because UK police have killed black men and women in their custody too! If you cared you'd see their names, my cousin was a victim aged 22.

MLK advocated peaceful protests.
malcom x advocated violence.

Both got results.
Sadly if there was no violence, there's no attention. If it takes this for people to LISTEN then do be it.

Fight my people, for our children.
80 years of marching, we cannot stop now!

SquirmOfEels · 03/06/2020 20:54

The protests in Windrush Square were adequately socially distanced, and did get some coverage on the London news.

I support completely that sort of protest, and wish it got more general coverage on the news - powerful, quiet, pandemic-compliant and in such a resonant location.

I an concerned about COVID containment, and think it is a shame that other protests seemed to be such a potential transmission risk.

It's not just a glib thing to be saying today, to be concerned about the higher disease and death rates in BAME communities. It's something that needs proper investigation, and unless/until bottomed out as less than it seems, it is unnerving to see a higher risk population closely packed together.

nicsknackered · 03/06/2020 20:54

@edwinbear I'm in London as well and I'm terrified now of a second wave. My kids have just gone back to school which was a massive decision for us and now I'm thinking it was the wrong decision. Can't see this ever ending..

Wow how many on here complaining are white? If you then go check yourself seriously because how lucky are you that you wont ever have suffer racism and be treated differently because of the colour of your skin.

Its institutional racism that's been going on for generations and it's not got better in the USA or in the UK. If people esp those more at risk of Covid have decided to take a stand I don't blame them nor would I be starting a post about how selfish they are for standing up to what they have to face their entire lives, what their parents have had to face etc.

Didnt see any posts about other protests that have been going on either. So why is this one so special?

Woodmarsh · 03/06/2020 20:55

@mamalion1319 I'm sorry that happened but I can't agree that it justifies further violence

june2007 · 03/06/2020 20:57

At this time I don,t know how it can be allowed tBH.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:01

I’m sure some people do feel anger at seeing people protest now

Though I doubt it’s the same anger and hurt and dismay that many are feeling about the brutal murder of George Floyd. He was murdered simply because he was black no other reason like for many their father, brother, grandfather, son

Anger often turns to violence this isn’t just about George Floyd this is about history and as society is now in 2020 that we apparently have an equal society yet this is still happening

Ylvamoon · 03/06/2020 21:02

@cyclingmad - but it's the same people who are currently on the streets that will complain about the higher than average infection/ death rate in the BAME community when the virus hits again!

Pebblexox · 03/06/2020 21:02

In my opinion, the biggest issue with this whole thing is that it has to have gotten this far for these people to be heard. You're right, it shouldn't be in the middle of a pandemic. Unfortunately if it's now now, everyone else will have forgotten again the black community will be left back exactly where the started. This is the most momentum the blm movement has had in a long time, they have to run with it whilst it's still front and centre.

nicsknackered · 03/06/2020 21:02

@cyclingmad it's selfish because we are in the middle of a pandemic, people are dying ffs so now is not the time to get 15,000 people together in a park.

But never mind the NHS staff can carry on working and getting sick, the supermarket workers can continue to be abused because people have to queue and my Mum and Dad can carry on being prisoners in their tiny home because they are terrified of catching it. Oh and my kids schools can shut down again so they are miserable and sad.

Selfish.

edwinbear · 03/06/2020 21:04

@nicsknackered yes, I also have a DC in Y6 just started back too. I will keep mine in school for now as we’re SE and not vulnerable, but I’d be reconsidering that decision if we were. The thought of demonstrators on public transport after being so closely together is frightening, as well as the risk to the police and impact on our hospitals which are just getting some breathing space back. Unfortunately I think the protestors will find this has completely the opposite effect to the one they wanted.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:06

London appears to be back to normal heavy traffic shopping areas busy (for the few that are open) I don’t see much social distancing

A second wave was likely to happen it’s a virus it hasn’t magically disappeared that some people are protesting has nothing to do with that

Shallwedancetomojito · 03/06/2020 21:06

Maybe this protest has more to do with Corona virus creating a pressure cooker situation. Lock people down like caged animals and they will act like one.

WhoWhatWheree · 03/06/2020 21:06

It just goes to show the levels of frustration that those who are BAME experiencing if they’re willing to protest against this institutional racism during a worldwide fucking pandemic- considering they are most at risk. But I suppose the prospect of FINALLY being listened to and coming together in solidarity to protest against the shit they have to go through ON A DAY TO DAY FUCKING BASIS is worth it.

How many of you complaining are white?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:09

Why will it have the opposite effect

Either you suppprt a change in society for racism to no longer be tolerated or you don’t you are quite happy to keep things as they are

That George Floyd was murdered during this time in history makes no difference to how people are feeling - should feelings and demand for changes be put on hold to a more convenient time

rainkeepsfallingdown · 03/06/2020 21:12

I love the assumption that just because I'm against a protest in the middle of a pandemic I must be white.

I'm not.

I just don't want people dying needlessly.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:12

No one has been locked down like cadged animals we have always been able to go out

I wonder if you would call football hooligans cadges animals

People are protesting and are hurt and angry I’ve personally never seen any animals holding up placards and marching in the streets

WhoWhatWheree · 03/06/2020 21:15

I just don't want people dying needlessly.

And you think those who are BAME want to die needlessly at the hands of the police due to their skin colour?

Shallwedancetomojito · 03/06/2020 21:16

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed

It's called metaphorically speaking.

MadameMarie · 03/06/2020 21:17

@PicsInRed

And, again, so lovely of white people to be "concerned" about the health of black people.

So "concerned". Hmm

All lives matter. It's all well and good the young turning upmtomprotest when it's not young people on the whole whom die from Covid.

Do they not care who.they infect? These protests could kill hundreds of people ffs.

It's basically Cheltenham revisited. Insanity. And the police have given the streets up to allow it in case its 2011 revisited.

user1498647726 · 03/06/2020 21:22

I fumed about Cummings, I fumed about the beaches, and I'm fuming about this. I'm also so disappointed that we're already back to 'whataboutery' and 'selective adherence to rules ok if it's something I agree with'. And 2.2 million in this country still essentially stuck at home till further notice. 😢

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:23

Seriously you are comparing a happy celebration of horse racing with today’s protesting

I don’t think I can put into words how fucking stupid you are

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/06/2020 21:25

Yes I am well aware Shallwedancetomojito

Cadged animals right ok
