To ask ditherers whether they realise how annoying they are?

Caveat - I know some people need extra time due to age, non visible disabilities etc....

But - if you hold queues up because despite waiting for 10 minutes plus you wait until you arrive at the serving point to choose what you want......or you appear surprised that you'll need to pay and start rooting through a huge bag for a purse etc

Are you aware how annoying this?

Just really curious as the woman who held the ice cream queue tonight, deliberately over the many flavours seemed completely oblivious to everyone waiting, the children getting antsy etc

@EmpressLangClegInChair That makes more sense than my second guess lmao (Man Of the House!).

Ha! Like maid of honour!! No, it's my other half - cant get the hang of acronyms on here and didn't realise MOH was unusual, sorry!

Zoey92 · 02/06/2020 22:06

Its the people that as you're walking out of the shop just stop dead in their tracks & start searching through their bag, usually in the bloody doorway

stayathomer · 03/06/2020 06:29

As said before I'm a ditherer and I admit I do stop faff, drop things at the till forget stuff etc, the only place I'd stand up as and say you need to give people a chance is at the airport. I wouldn't agree most people know how to navigate an airport, I've been on a plane twice in 20 years!! I literally have no clue about the check in malarkey or security or where to go

Oblomov20 · 03/06/2020 07:18

I find ditherers very very annoying.

It depends where in the airport.

Not knowing where to go at speed, totally reasonable.
Standing at the top/bottom of an escalator looking bewildered instead of choosing to move out the way whilst working out where to go, not reasonable and simply dithering.

If someone is using the benches/organising/bin area before the security queue to double check they're following the instructions and have everything to hand because they'd forgotten to pack the required items near the top of their bag, then go for it.
If it's stand in a line for security for half an hour to get to one of 3 checkpoints before starting to rummage, pull out a giant carton of liquid having walked past loads of bin bags and signs about liquids, seem surprised that they too have to follow the same security procedures as everyone else despite all the signs and a whole queue of people removing coats etc, then that's dithering.

At the gate, if someone takes their time walking up to the gate so they can get their boarding pass ready, great. Not unreasonable because the plane won't take off til it's ready.
If it's stand in a queue for 5/10 mins, watch everyone have their boarding passes ready (just like the announcement said) and then stand at the front having a good old rummage, that's dithering.

Put your purse somewhere where you know where it is, i.e. a zipped pocket, etc - not just under all the other junk in your over-sized handbag.

Yes, this. You don't have to leave it out and exposed to any would-be thieves, but have it accessible.

It reminds me of when some janitors/caretakers let the power go to their heads by insisting on methodically sorting through a huge bunch of 200 keys that open every single rarely-accessed cupboard in the building every single time rather than clearly marking and keeping separate the 3 keys for the front and main doors that they need 30 times a day.

As for those people mentioned upthread who like to demonstrate their supposed self-importance by deliberately faffing at the till in Aldi to make the lesser mortals wait and pay them due respect, they really need to have a word with themselves. I wonder how long the Queen forces the little people to wait whilst she pays for her baked beans and toilet roll in Aldi....

stayathomer · 04/06/2020 12:41

LolaSmiles ALL of it sounds terrifying to me even just reading your reply, I think, yes, possibly people like me shouldn't even go to airports, I'd generally stand in line with everything in order then drop something, give the wrong thing etc, I'm hopeless!!!!

pawsies · 05/06/2020 01:17

If a faffer is held up by a faffer do they get annoyed or do they understand?

I'm a patient person mostly but working on a till I see some ridiculous behaviours.
One person today put her shopping on my till (the only one in the store because of Covid and we aren't busy enough to put multiple tills on) so obviously I had to move it because she went to get other stuff. I don't get why you don't just put your items somewhere in the store until you have everything you want. Why clog up the till? Are you that important that I have to move your stuff to serve others?! Should everyone else wait for you whilst you accumulate your stuff?
Stuff like that winds me up.

The ones who have no disabilities or other vulnerabilities that mean they can't help it but they just think that the Sun shines out of their bottom probably get furious. I imagine there could be some fun in standing back and watching it play out between two of these sort, though - like the CFs who suddenly 'realise' after an expensive meal out that they've 'forgotten' their wallet in order to score a big freebie and then, to their horror, discover that their dining companion has been planning all along to pull the exact same stunt.

famousforwrongreason · 05/06/2020 04:26

I'm a ditherer due to disability, cognitive issues and huge anxiety. People can be really horrible about it, especially because I 'don't look disabled'.

It's really not that bad to be honest, which is probably why people get frustrated.

For example, each airline tells passengers what they can have, and everyone has to take out liquids etc. If you pack the things that you know need removing at the top of your hand luggage then when you get to the front all you have to do is open your bag, take out the top items and put them in the tray. If you drop something it's not the end of the world and it's not dithering. The dithering is people who ignore the requirements when they pack to fly, walk past all the signs, then at the front start turfing everything out because they've paid zero attention to all the information given about security.

At the end of the security area there's either space at the end of the area or separate benches to pack, so there's no need to block the end of the security conveyor. Some people can speed pack on their way out, others prefer neat packing so take our trays to the benches out the way. Dithering would be standing faffing with packing at the exit to the scanning machine when there's a giant queue.

oh god one of my best friends is a ditherer... Bless her lol.. we were going shopping, she msged oh Im just getting in the shower...30 mins before we were due to leave. 45 mins later another msg... im just getting dressed now... 15 mins later she appears... faffing is my other word for it.. faffing about. They seem to take 10 times longer than the rest of us to do something lol. but its just a personality type.. I probably rush things too much and Im always stupidly early wherever I go which probably annoys other people haha..

Asthenia · 05/06/2020 11:03

Ditherers drive me mad but on the other hand I had a man practically follow me round Aldi the other day on my heels tutting and sighing every time I stopped to look at something. There was plenty of space and it wasn’t at all busy. It made me feel quite stressed and in the end I asked him if he could give me some space and he huffed away. Ridiculous and I am certainly not a ditherer!
