To think that the looters should be ashamed of themselves

I think that the protests are fully justified, and support them, but imo looting is ridiculous. Using the horrific death of someone as an excuse to steal?? This is not what George Floyd would have wanted. Probably quite the opposite.

Lot of white people doing that damage. Have a wee Google OP.

clipclop5 · 01/06/2020 00:01

@PicsInRed I have. I’m willing to say that a lot of those people, no matter black or white are probably not there for the sake of the BAME community. They are there as there is an excuse to loot, which I find utterly disgusting.

Wtfdidwedo · 01/06/2020 00:03

I don't know, if I was murdered by someone whose job is to protect people, leaving my children without a parent, I probably wouldn't mind if some people looted in my name.

NCbutnotaweirdsextroll · 01/06/2020 00:06

They're angry. They want to hurt the system.
TBH I don't blame them. It's a way to act out, to make an impact, to cause some anarchy.

It might not be the right thing to but fucking hell, crushing a man's neck whilst he slowly suffocated, calling for help and begging for his life wasn't relaly the right thing to do either was it Angry

The OP didn't say otherwise did she? Confused

YANBU OP

It was the same with the London riots years ago. Lots of thugs just looking for an excuse to steal and burn things.

They generally have nothing to do with the peaceful protesters at all. They're just bandwagon jumpers.

Sparklfairy · 01/06/2020 00:08

Reminds me of what happened with the London riots. The BBC were interviewing two young-ish (early 20s) women in the street in the midst of the peak of it, drinking wine from the bottle. The interviewer said, 'So why are you here, joining in?' One said, 'Oh I dunno, everyone on fb said they were doing it, and er... we hate the government!' 'Why do you hate the government?' 'I dunno!' I doubt she had any idea who Mark Duggan was.

ClarencesMum · 01/06/2020 00:08

I doubt the poor guy was giving much thought to looters as he was getting suffocated.

clipclop5 · 01/06/2020 00:19

@Wtfdidwedo if it was your parent that died would you really want a bunch of idiots putting their entire memory and the BAME movement at risk for the sake of looting a TV?

FortunesFave · 01/06/2020 00:26

The reasons behind the looting are complex. There is crushing poverty and hopelessness in some communities. Those people are desperate for change, they feel worthless and hopeless. If they had been given more opportunities then they would not.

squeekums · 01/06/2020 00:30

The cops brought this on themselves, americas government has brought this on themselves

With a lifetime of hate, discrimination and STILL nothing has changed, are you shocked people so angry.
The rodney king riots 30 years ago, flint Michigan in recent times, take a knee at NFL games, nothing has worked
The people have been ignored and abused and they are PISSED, rightly so
This is simply what happens when you treat a whole bunch of people like shit for so long
This is what happens with a corrupt police force and government

Greenmarmalade · 01/06/2020 00:31

I don’t care about the looting. It’s a distraction.

safariboot · 01/06/2020 00:31

If being a law-abiding citizen doesn't stop the police from killing you when they feel like it, why be a law-abiding citizen?

This.

I'm astounded that looting has riled up more people than the events that lead to unrest in the first place. If you thinks it's as simple as being angry about the tragic murder of George Floyd that has lead to looting, you are misinformed and need to do some serious research.

Who cares? Honestly in the big picture I’m
astonished people who don’t live directly in an area affected by looting get upset about it.

There would be no looting if the persistent inequalities in American society had been addressed. Time after time it has failed. You reap what you sow.

serenada · 01/06/2020 00:49

Trevor Noah's video covers this really well. He talks about how the social contract that exists between people and the 'state' is effectively being broken every day for black people. How in the end, if you are being confronted with racism at this level, it must break your will to want to contribute to a system that does this to you in return.

I'm not sure we white people are getting this. That in itself shows the huge disparity between our relationship with the state and that of POC. I think of every thing I read and hear and internally my voice is measuring these things up with what I know of the world. I think what I would do in that situation and how I would react and then question why didn't that person do the same?

It is only once you realise that for some people they have come to believe - actually believe that the game is rigged against them - that it becomes too hard to try - to even get the mental wherewithal together to try and then it makes sense. That, as white people, we don't see this only underlines the point being made, I think.

We have to do more.

serenada · 01/06/2020 00:51

Meant to add...

It is only once you realise that for some people they have come to believe - actually believe that the game is rigged against them AND ALL THE EVIDENCE THEY SEE TELLS THEM THAT THEY ARE CORRECT TO THINK THIS

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 01/06/2020 00:58

Black people tried to be polite and protest peacefully (Martin Luther King, Colin Kaepernick) but nothing has changed.

I think the police using brutality to police the protesters is far worse.

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 00:59

Who started smashing the windows at one protest? Confirmed by his ex wife... a white cop... who then ran off when black protesters filmed him.

serenada · 01/06/2020 01:11

@MorganKitten

Really? Someone confirmed he was a white policeman?

I watched the video on Reddit where the guy in pink follows him. I think they suspected he was a policeman.

Unbelievable.

You know, in the days when more people believed in ghosts, a man brutally murdered by the police would be exactly the kind of situation to give rise to an "unquiet spirit". I don't believe in ghosts, but what I'm trying to say is, do you really think that the soul of George Floyd would be looking down on earth a scant few days later and feeling all worried about other people's property being destroyed? After an agonising, traumatic event?

He was an ordinary man who got murdered after going out to buy something, not a Christian missionary who'd spent his entire life expecting to be martyred!

CalmYoBadSelf · 01/06/2020 01:22

I agree OP. I have never understood why smashing up one's own community and stealing are excused as acceptable forms of protest

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 01:25

@serenada his ex wife, but the police are saying he’s not from that state
Also the Minneapolis Mayor Confirmed that 40 arrests made in for looting were of people linked to white supremacist groups.
