To think that the looters should be ashamed of themselves

I think that the protests are fully justified, and support them, but imo looting is ridiculous. Using the horrific death of someone as an excuse to steal?? This is not what George Floyd would have wanted. Probably quite the opposite.

I completely agree, it entirely undermines the original protests and disgrace the name of George floyd, God rest his soul.
If you truly care about a cause you wouldn't exploit it.

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 01:27

I agree OP. I have never understood why smashing up one's own community and stealing are excused as acceptable forms of protest

The Minneapolis Mayor Confirmed that 40 arrests made in for looting were of people linked to white supremacist groups.

serenada · 01/06/2020 01:29

But someone has said that the person doing the smashing was an undercover policeman - many of the protesters may be from other areas/there precisely for the looting.

There was a very interesting article I read from a Russian graduate who said he funded his studies by organising a kind of rent a mob for people in his city. There will be people who are deliberately trying to discredit the black community, who know that tensions are high and get off on the adrenaline of a riot. A protest in the US today, where a white man brought out a bow and arrow quickly, changed in tone but all of the people you could see on camera were white.

In cities like London, it is very easy for people to pile in on these things for ulterior motives.

Aclh13 · 01/06/2020 01:29

I agree with above posts? The point about black lives matter is for equality and to eradicate colourism? Why label black, white ect when the OP was stating how the protest itself was undermined by the action of the looters. Action is not defined by colour and neither is evil.

serenada · 01/06/2020 01:31

@MorganKitten

Thanks. That video of him is chilling. He was so methodical and matter of fact in the way he smashed the windows.

WhatwouldLangdo · 01/06/2020 01:31

Action is not defined by colour

Do you not know how racism works? Hmm

I myself as a BAME individual can see that this is hypocritical, you cannot fight against a problem by labelling those you are fighting the same problem.

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 01:37

@serenada trump was endorsed by ‘the grand high wizard’ of the KKK.. yep they are called wizards, so it’s not really a shock that people will try insight violence.
I’ve lived here and all over America, Michigan has the KKK headquarters and Working there was very strange, my heart hurts for people there it really does.

@MorganKitten

I can't believe they are actually still around. They were ridiculed out of existence in the 70s or so I thought. With their history, how can they not be seen as a hate group and banned?

Dazzband · 01/06/2020 01:42

You don't know what George Floyd would have wanted. I'm not disgusted at looting at all. I'm disgusted by the police, the killing and the ongoing systematic racism that has been allowed to continue. Enough is enough

I’m horrified by the white looters. Disgusting excuses for human beings.

serenada · 01/06/2020 01:46

The focus on looting is a real red herring, isn't it?

I think it is worthy of a debate in itself as then it can be examined in light of ideas and experience on social contract and how it is part of a wider system of failure.

You don't criticise someone who self harms or turns the anger on themselves - that people can't see this all for the pain it is amazes me.

Doesn't mean I condone it at all - rather I just see judgement on as a deflection of the real issues.

USirName · 01/06/2020 01:47

Hi OP, can you link me to your thread "To think that the police should be ashamed of themselves" cause I know you must even more outraged at the senseless murder of an unarmed man by the police and the brutality shown by the police against unarmed peaceful protesters with rubber bullets, batons and pepperspray, oh yes and a fucking police vehicle!

If you were paying attention you would see that the cities (like Flint) where the police took to the streets and actually talked to the protesters, walked with them, told them they understood their anger and they supported them... there was NO rioting. Rioting occured in cities where the police came at the protesters with violence. Pay attention!

NeutrinoWrangler · 01/06/2020 01:49

YANBU. Looting and destruction of property doesn't promote positive change. It only distracts from the message, creates division, and hurts the community as a whole.

Not even righteous anger is an excuse for breaking laws, two wrongs don't make a right, etc., etc.

MorganKitten · 01/06/2020 01:50

@serenada they have their own newspapers and claim they are Christian... unfortunately the neo Nazis groups have started to join them.
Trump won’t say much against them as his father was once a member, including being arrested at a KKK riot.

BelleHathor · 01/06/2020 01:50

As a BAME woman I am disgusted by the looting. I am disgusted by Black owned businesses being burned down by non Black out of town protesters acting in the so called name of racism. Of affordable housing being destroyed, as I know when the story moves on in a few days, it will be black people with no housing, no jobs and labelled as violent. When the cameras go with no actual purpose or "Black agenda" what would have been achieved? Killer Mike said it best :

ShinyFootball · 01/06/2020 01:51

Thank you chinam!

Aridane · 01/06/2020 01:54

Reminds me of what happened with the London riots. The BBC were interviewing two young-ish (early 20s) women in the street in the midst of the peak of it, drinking wine from the bottle. The interviewer said, 'So why are you here, joining in?' One said, 'Oh I dunno, everyone on fb said they were doing it, and er... we hate the government!' 'Why do you hate the government?' 'I dunno!' I doubt she had any idea who Mark Duggan was.

Yeah, right

Because 400 years of slavery, oppression and killing of black men by law enforcement - and the long slow burn erupting into fury - is so like the female wine drinkers

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2020 01:55

The focus on looting is a real red herring, isn't it?

It's almost like the entire system has a vested interest in blaming black people and exonerating white ones.

Individual acts by individual people is one thing. Systemic racism from the very top down is quite another.
