To think that the looters should be ashamed of themselves

I think that the protests are fully justified, and support them, but imo looting is ridiculous. Using the horrific death of someone as an excuse to steal?? This is not what George Floyd would have wanted. Probably quite the opposite.

Did you not read it?

I am trying to point out the rank hypocrisy of condemning one group who caused civil disorder, fear and damage, while finding excuses to not condemn another group who carried out those acts.

And are getting very defensive about it.

It's interesting to see double standards in action like this.

Insurance in the USA is a lot more expensive than the UK, most of our insurance costs for family life are four times more.
Many local businesses here weren't covered and in the BAME areas the store owners were BAME too.
The anger in understandable but the destruction isn't helpful.
The local economy was just about to get restarted after months of lockdown and now we have a curfew and boarded up buildings.
I wonder if people who are cool with this destruction would be so enthusiastic if it was happening on their street and their local supermarket was shut and their pharmacy looted so they couldn't get their medication (usually you have a designated pharmacy here)

I don't think anyone is 'cool' with it.

Just looking at things unfold and understanding the utter rage that is spilling over. And that this is a very complicated situation with a long history behind it.

My concern is that trump is a warmonger. He is out of his depth with covid. This will escalate and why knows where it will end.

This is definitely true. His current culture war will resonate with his base, particularly in rural areas but will be challenge to keeping to center rightish urban/suburban groups. They are capable of having no time for either looters or policemen who kill unarmed blokes.

But looters allow the messages of racism to get lost which is why protesters as well as gangs and the police are trying to stop them.

The police seem more a symptom of the problems rather than the sole problem themselves.

The impact of looting and rioting when you are in community experiencing it shouldn't be minimized, it isn't just an insurance claim and everyone is back to normal.

@ShinyFootball Yes, I have read it, many times. You’re getting so defensive that you’re conjuring up random illogical situations that make absolutely no sense. The suffragettes and BAME movement aren’t even comparable.

If being a law-abiding citizen doesn't stop the police from killing you when they feel like it, why be a law-abiding citizen

THIS. Also - peaceful protests arent fcking working are they? This keeps happening over and over and over again- when people feel powerless and marginalised and that their basic LIVES don’t matter they aren’t going to be thinking rationally.

midwestsummer · 03/06/2020 23:07

Where I live the looters and rioters shut the city down meaning that vulnerable dc couldn't get their lunch packets, the pharmacies were looted so medication wasn't available and in areas that already are struggling with food deserts the few supermarkets there were shut down leaving real questions about where the most vulnerable in society can buy food.
It isn't difficult to understand why this behavior happened but it also isn't difficult to see that the vulnerable in society suffers most for it happening.

Protesting is a way of evoking change. Hundreds of people running out of a store with cool boxes full of Jordans and burning a homeless man’s mattress, throwing petrol over a refuge for single parents and setting it alight. This is being done out of anger is it ?
