How do you sleep together?

Seriously. How do couples sleep together and manage to get a good night's sleep?

I haven't spent the full night with my husband in over 2 years. Whenever we try it results in an argument. Either because one of us is taking up too much space, or one is breathing too loudly or snoring, disturbing the other. And then there's the fact we both often get up to go to the loo in the night which disturbs the other. So he will always leave to the spare room so we can actually sleep.

How do people manage it? We have a king size bed and we aren't big people. I never imagined spending my married life like this.

Superking sized bed.
DH's snoring is now controlled by using s CPAP machine.
He uses the loo really quietly and doesn't wake me up.

It sounds like you both need to be a little more considerate towards each other, or sleep in separate bedrooms.

ElspethFlashman · 31/05/2020 12:11

Earplugs.

The yellow and pink ones, Laser Lites. Otherwise we wouldn't have lasted a year!

QueenofmyPrinces · 31/05/2020 12:15

We spend about 4 nights a week in separate rooms.

His snoring drives me up the wall.

meow1989 · 31/05/2020 12:16

Facing away from each other and a good poke if dh snores!
In the colder weather recently I came up with the game changing idea of each having our own (king) duvet. Bliss as I could wrap myself up in it!

If dh has been drinking though we do sleep in separate rock.s as the snoring is too much!

Mycatsmellsbad · 31/05/2020 12:17

We don’t. If our bedroom was big enough I’d get the biggest bed we could afford (or have separate beds) but it’s not so separate rooms for us. Made a huge difference.

Pollony · 31/05/2020 12:17

Dp doesnt snore really but we bought a king sized bed and really good mattress that doesnt move about when someone gets in or out of bed.

Elouera · 31/05/2020 12:20
  • Earplugs
  • Put the bed in the centre of the room, so each of you can get out of bed on your own sides for the loo without disturbing the other
  • A fan helps keep you cooler, which helps with sleep and also helps drown out the snoring slightly
Avelosa · 31/05/2020 12:20

We have a super king, and like @meow1989 we have a duvet each! Game changer!

Elouera · 31/05/2020 12:21

PIL's have a bed which is independent on each side and they have remotes that can rise the back of the bed.

MooseBreath · 31/05/2020 12:22

Some nights are better than others. DH is a big guy, and I'm not as slender as I used to be, and we have a double. We often overheat on hot nights. Snoring is something that we've had to power through!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 31/05/2020 12:24

Separate beds, pushed together, with a single duvet.

DH is incapable of rolling over without bouncing himself about a foot into the air. He always maintained he barely moved at night and I was just a ridiculously light sleeper. Which I am, but.... once we slept in a hotel room where the beds were on wheels, and every single morning he would end up on the other side of the room, by the door. He'd literally spend all night slowly bouncing across the room Grin

RingaRosie · 31/05/2020 12:24

Our bed isn’t big, lucky we like sleeping close together. I took the duvet off yesterday & put on a lightweight cover. That’s helped with the heat.
DH is sweaty, hairy. Snores like crazy after a few drinks, morning breath a mix of sinus & cigs.
I’m pregnant, waking every hour to turn (while groaning loudly) or pee, switching the light on.
We’re both really annoying right now, at night. But it’s getting us ready for the baby, at least...
Baby’s room has a bed, so I reckon one of us will be in there a lot once Baby transfers from our bedroom.

ParkheadParadise · 31/05/2020 12:25

Super king bed. At Christmas we stayed with friends who had a double bed I never slept all night. I couldn't go back to a double bed.

dudsville · 31/05/2020 12:26

Super king size bed. Separate duvets. White noise machine. A bedroom that's just for sleeping, bit for clothing putting on or off or anything else, no ensuite.

RingaRosie · 31/05/2020 12:26

DH also tends to jump into bed, rather than slip under the covers quietly!

By the way, it's seen as traditional for couples to sleep together only because, for a long time, most people couldn't afford separate bedrooms. Those who could afford it did sleep separately, but they were in the minority so it eventually became the done thing.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 31/05/2020 12:28

@RobBBCNews first day, mate? Grin

SimonJT · 31/05/2020 12:29

Like this with me usually being the big spoon as he is a very very heavy sleeperr, however it’s only been just over a year. Come back in five years and we’ll be like “stop breathing” “you’re taking up too much space” etc.

How do you sleep together?
poilymo · 31/05/2020 12:29

Separate duvets!

recycledbottle · 31/05/2020 12:30

We have the bed in the middle of the room and leave the hall light on so we dont disturb each other. Neither snores though.

Undies1990 · 31/05/2020 12:31

Super king size bed is the absolute answer to your dreams

MinteeFresh · 31/05/2020 12:31

Superking bed. Modern mattress that doesnt react when one person gets in or out. Spare room bed for anyone that has been on the piss.

StartingGrid · 31/05/2020 12:31

We don't - seperate bedrooms! Selfishly I'm happy with that as he is a terrible sleeper, I'm not

raspberryk · 31/05/2020 12:32

Like the dead, I have been known to sleep through small earthquakes and storms directly overhead though.
We have slept in a smaller than double with access only one side, now we have a kingsize and have never had any trouble sleeping or disturbing each other if we get up to use the loo. We like being in the same bed though. I am a duvet hog and DP is like a radiator so that might be part of how we work. Either of us would just yank the covers back if we needed to. We have a fan when it is hot and have a low tog duvet or just a sheet to prevent overheating. If one of us is breathing loudly or snoring we just turn the other way. DP needs noise to sleep so he has sleep music on - not sure if this helps us both, I don't notice the difference I can sleep through any radio, tv, neighbours party.
