To be mildly gutted about primark?!

As in that apparently it won't be amongst the 'non essential' shops opening June 15th....

I know they're doing what they think is the right thing (& at this stage in the proceedings non of us know for sure what's best) but I for one am seeing them as pretty darn Essential right now, especially as all my pre lockdown clothes seem to have inexplicably and simultaneously shrunk! Hmm

So many places online seem to have sold out of decent but reasonably priced cotton shorts in my size (newly acquired 12 - apparently - so fairly average) and till today I'd kind of been pinning my hopes on a brief stock up at my local in a week or two but alas it seems its not too be... Sad

Anyone else a bit peeved it's going to have to be either immediate diet or the drastic measure of the shoe horn (resulting in horrific double - ended muffin top, no doubt)?! And also recommend anywhere online I can get some cotton, preferably cotton linen blend, elasticated waist shorts??
I can't be only Lockdown Lardy out there? Grin

I buy all my t shirts and vests from Primark. Never thrown one away yet, they fit well, keep their shape, I can always buy the same size and they fit my tall frame. Also have fab long vest dresses that come out every summer. DD loves their PJs, which last fantastically well. No idea what people are doing with their clothes to make them disposable after one wear.

H&M is impossible online, their sizing is all over the place.

Lots of Mumsnetters are snobby about Primark and under the misapprehension that paying more for clothes makes them more ethical, when often it is just more money for shareholders. Some of the more expensive brands were the ones that behaved poorly over the Rana Plaza fire.

Hate H&M as they believe that every female shopper is 5"9 and a size 12. Everything boring and awful quality, trash trash cash.

Sainsbos is a zillion times better in terms of quality. Asda too. I digress...

@NothingIsGoing2GetBetterItsNot have you really not got anything at all in your wardrobe? I envy you. I have more clothes than places to wear them to. Or have you been Kondoing? Wink

OpenWheelRace · 28/05/2020 22:19

I'd heavily recommend watching this - our "need" for cheap, disposable clothing does not trump the need of the clothing makers safety and basic human rights.

OpenWheelRace · 28/05/2020 22:21

Does anyone have any suggestions of cheaper end of market clothing retailers

Also buying second hand

OpenWheelRace · 28/05/2020 22:22

Ignore People Tree - I wouldn't call it cheap!

Nottherealslimshady · 28/05/2020 22:24

Asda make awesome clothes. Mine have also shrunk but I refuse to buy bigger ones so I'm dieting again! My thighs are rubbing together so much I can only wear certain clothes now anyway Blush

MerryDeath · 28/05/2020 22:55

how depressing. you know all that rubbish is destroying our planet.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 28/05/2020 23:03

M&S have these and in the sale, size 12 available www.marksandspencer.com/linen-rich-shorts/p/clp22156182?color=NAVY#intid=prodColourId-60374377

Asda George is good for those kind of things, i had a similiar issue recently, unless you go for vicious diet and exercise. Guess what i went for?

I just wish supermarkets and online shops had more stock. DD has outgrown her clothes- moved up a size and every single supermarket near me is out of stock for essentials in her size. No age 10-11 shorts, leggings or pjs to be found. She has 1 pair of leggings I bought in ages ago and put away. A few t shirts that are still long enough so that’s fine. 1 pair of joggers that fit but it’s too warm for them just now. She’s resorted to sleeping in some of DHs t shirts as they are like big nighties.
I’ve been checking online too but most stuff has sold out in her size. The few items left are overpriced and hideous. She’s not a girly girl and wouldn’t entertain floral prints (which is all that’s left) she also won’t wear denim or stiff fabrics of any description so the vast majority of shorts available are a no go too. I don’t want to waste my money on hideous clothes she hates and won’t wear once we can get out again. Even places like eBay are slim pickings at the moment.
Next plan is to go into the loft and dig out my sewing machine so I can whip up some shorts, leggings and pjs for her. At least I can still buy fabric online that’s suitable.

And of course all the primark trolls jump on the thread telling us all how bad primark is for us. Don't think that was the question being asked .

Ginfordinner · 28/05/2020 23:10

Those of you saying that the OP should buy clothes from charity shops must live in affluent areas.

I live near what was traditionally a Yorkshire mining town which is not knows for being affluent. The most upmarket article of clothing the charity shops there would be from Next. Usually it is Primark, supermarket and the odd M and S item.

Also, I'm not sure how soon the charity shops will open

Ginandbearit1 · 28/05/2020 23:12

Try the supermarkets, Tesco had lots of stock and similar price to Primark.

Scruffyoak · 28/05/2020 23:14

I'm looking forward to doing a shop for nightwear and undies in primark.

Twofurrycatsagain · 28/05/2020 23:17

Got to say after extensive testing I have never bought anything from primark that falls apart after a couple of wears. I have capri leggings, 3 quid I think ,that are on their third or fourth summer, worn and washed weekly. No fade, no bagging, no holes. Pretty good cost per wear.
I like h and m and ordered online in lockdown. The sizing is too random. Over half went back.

When the building collapsed in Bangladesh in 2013, brands from Primark to Matalan, to River Island to Benetton, to Mango to Gucci and Versace, were involved. Mango was one of the brands that refused to give compensation. It took two years for Mango and Benetton to pay out. Primark had paid immediately.

Since then Primark has, become more ethical. Out of the shops that get their stuff from Bangladesh, they are no worse. There was another documentary a year later which showed clothing being shipped to cities in the UK, were it was finished just enough to not have 'made in Bangladesh' on the label. These were the 'higher retailers' and all employed people working akin to modern day slavery. But if you shop in a variety of places, you see the same pattern material used, the garments are just slightly designed differently.

I like their bras, they fit me perfectly. So I can't wait for them to open again.

Ponoka7 · 28/05/2020 23:32

Also Primark recruit their managers off the shop floor. I know people without qualifications, who've gone from £12k a year to £30k (in the NW) and can go further.

ButteryPuffin · 28/05/2020 23:38

I would guess that as soon as they can open safely, they will. I read something about the risks to them in particular - they don't sell online so won't have sold anything for the whole of lockdown unlike other retailers, they have large stores that will have high fixed costs, and their main asset, the clothes, is sitting on shelves right now going more and more out of date. I would expect them to be desperately looking at ways they can open even if that means restricting numbers in stores very heavily.

Ponoka7 · 28/05/2020 23:38

Asda was also one who didn't pay compensation. They switched to production from South Asia were they still don't pay a living wage. Workers can work from 8am to 3am and still not have enough to live on.

sunshinemode · 28/05/2020 23:42

Morrison’s have some cotton linen blend. I bought them last summer they were great and I noticed they were back again.

Am I the only one boycotting Chinese tat?
Bloody hell haven't we had enough pain. Giving Chinese products a miss at all costs.

Good luck with that. Loads of manufacturing done in China.

You must be boycotting thousands of things then. A lot of items are made in China.
