To be furious BIL is making us look bad to save his skin?

BIL and his wife have a 4yo. They went to stay on his parents estate 5 hours drive away breaking all lockdown rules. Because of his high profile job in government this has become something of an issue.

In order to defend the trip he's telling the papers that they had no choice, they were worried that they would both become so ill they couldn't care for DN and had to go so far to be near suitable childcare.

We live around the corner. Of course, in the unlikely event that BIL and SIL both became so unwell they couldn't care for him, we'd have looked after him.

I don't know if they think we'd we unwilling or we are unsuitable but they didn't even ask.

AIBU to be furious this is the story he's using to justify his actions?

I think the issue was that your BIL had covid related eyesight issues, poor chap couldn’t see to read his address book and come find you. Luckily he could remeber the way to his parents house, 250 miles away so all good in the end.

Haha OP this really made me laugh! And to the people defending him with, there's worse things happening, covid is serious etc, we are all fully aware of the implications of Covid which makes his piss poor decision making even worse. Why he thought he was exempt from self isolating when someone in the household is showing covid symptoms I will never understand. He put people at risk! The guy you are asking us to 'be kind' to could be the reason somebody you love dies as he is clearly above the rules being used to contain the spread!

Isn't it because people are still dying that this is such an important issue?. It gives the impression that the rules aimed to control the virus don't always apply

@Bloomburger totally agree with your post! This family may have or may not have done wrong in people’s eyes but the abuse he is getting now is vile, the poor 4 year old must wonder what is happening outside his home with all the shouting etc. Even Cummings parents are getting abuse at their home. It’s wrong and like you say there is so much more going on right now. How some people live with theirselves I will never know.

The problem with this is, is that there are three routes to releasing lockdown:

1. vaccine - not likely to be available in sufficient quantities until 2021 and no one is sure how well it works

2. 'herd immunity' much higher death rate, swamping the NHS, bad for the Conservative party and makes the initial lockdown entirely pointless; or

3. track trace and isolate. This only works if people download the app, allow it to track their movements and then isolate. If any of those are broken by people following instincts, or just using common sense or whatever else, we're back to option 2.

That's why it matters.

"hey dad, can I come and stay at yours because we think we've got covid?"

"Hey son, no, thats a stupid idea, get well soon though!"

He acted wrong if he owned it and apologised I would be ok with it but he wont because he is above all that

If people are harassing him he can call the police like the rest of us they have the right to disperse fine even taser people especially if they are distressing his child it's his choice he should do what he feels is right
