AIBU?

To be furious BIL is making us look bad to save his skin?

BIL and his wife have a 4yo. They went to stay on his parents estate 5 hours drive away breaking all lockdown rules. Because of his high profile job in government this has become something of an issue.

In order to defend the trip he's telling the papers that they had no choice, they were worried that they would both become so ill they couldn't care for DN and had to go so far to be near suitable childcare.

We live around the corner. Of course, in the unlikely event that BIL and SIL both became so unwell they couldn't care for him, we'd have looked after him.

I don't know if they think we'd we unwilling or we are unsuitable but they didn't even ask.

AIBU to be furious this is the story he's using to justify his actions?

Grin Sorry, I'll get my coat....

@Bloomburger Because this man is running our country. How can we possibly expect someone to make decisions in all of our best interests when that person has been proven to be a selfish lying sack of shit that holds the rest of us in complete contempt?

I just turned the tv off as sick of every Tom, Dick and Harry weighing in on webcam about this, Jeremy Vine show (hosted by Anne Diamond) thought we really needed to hear the opinion of some random healthcare worker fgs.

I don't think the cummings & goings of relatives should be your concern tbh they clearly do not care for your feelings or for the feelings of the country as a whole. I must say that they did very well to drive for five hours with a four year old and not need to stop for a pee Hmm

Actually, this one is quite funny, OP. You’re getting better. Actually you’ve probably peaked. You can probably stop now. 😉

I do like it when we are reminded that many politicians actually do the job for the right reasons and have integrity.

Well done Doug Ross.

That's not true. He said their normal childcare options werent available, and nieces in Durham had offered.

Problem is that we are then left with more shitweasels in power.

Did he Tabby? He said that initially, but then when asked said they didn't ask local friends and family.

A (very) mildly amusing post, OP. The post below was actually funny though, the irony Grin

I know Boss, I laughed too but isn't it the case that "Be Kind" is generally used to be anything but?

I genuinely would be furious if I were SIL though.

I agree, there is no need to read or comment if so dreadfully bored by it all:

Well, I'm sure you would have done in the end, but asking 'why can't Wormtongue look after his own bloody child for a change?' when she called last time possibly didn't help.

Early on in the prepared speech he said childcare options weren’t there. But when questioned afterwards if they’d asked anybody locally before taking the niece’s offer he said no they hadn’t.
So it is probably true that their normal nursery / nanny / childminder was not available, but that doesn’t mean friends and relatives wouldn’t have stepped in as they weren’t asked.

Oh FGS, he's one man, he is no worse than the dickheads milling about on beaches over the weekend.

He's not some random idiot on a beach; he's the government's chief political advisor and he is partly responsible for drafting and implementing the lockdown rules. It's also disingenuous to deflect by pointing out that lots of people have broken the rules. We know that. They are also in the wrong. That doesn't get Cummings off the hook whatsoever.

Will you guys get a life and stop banging on about him. People are still dying, the economy is fucked, people will be dying for years due to the socio economic results of the lockdown and there could be a second curve in which more people will loose their lives.

And do you think that the public will be more or less likely to follow government rules as a result of Dominic Cummings' behaviour? Leading behavioural scientists who initially advised the government on how to ensure public compliance are tearing their hair out because Johnson has undermined all their research by backing Cummings and they believe that fewer people will be inclined to adhere to the rules in the aftermath of this. Perhaps all those "dickheads" on the beach are an example of this in action.

Do you remember the phrase Be Kind?

Take the higher ground and stop being so fucking nasty.

Being kind does not mean giving up the right to hold the government to account. It doesn't mean that you silently accept dishonesty and weak leadership because to object is "unkind". And to be honest it carries a little less weight when it comes from someone who's just told another person to "get a life" 🙄

He is a man in a position of responsibility, and who was (for some reason) seemingly instrumental in developing the stay at home message. If you can't see the difference between him doing this and someone popping to the beach, then quite frankly that's ridiculous.

I'm loving all the people duty bound to comment about how pointless it all is, but you're right the thread is very insignificant.

The man's own party don't think the whole issue is insignificant though, when big Boris and Brexit supporters are calling for his resignation and stepping down themselves.
