Are you a door opener or a non door opener

I find this concept so far from my reality that I always contribute something sarcastic on the threads... but it made me think, AM I in the minority? Is this an actual thing ? Personally I would NEVER not answer the door... is this because I live in a quiet village in the Highlands.. or because I have scant regard for the worst of human kind...and will come a cropper.

YANBU = I always answer the door , why would I not

YABU = It could be someone wishing to do you harm and not worth the risk, be it a parent , parent-in-law, psychotic axe murderer...

Age would be helpful to understand this mindset (but not essential obvs)

Disclaimer: if it is clearly Mormons or “we are on probation and are selling rubbish dusters as part of our rehabilitation” then I probably wouldn’t. Otherwise, yes.

I always open the door. It might be a parcel, a friend, someone in need.

We've got a ring doorbell so screen the front door

No one we aren't expecting usually comes and amazon have instructions to leave parcels in the porch

I've never met anyone who isn't a door opener, mind you that's probably not surprising.

However I’m very comfortable shutting it again with a cheery, “No thank you” if it is someone selling something, persuading me to vote for them or trying to convert me.

If I don't like the look of them in my peep hole/ not expecting a parcel etc then I won't answer. Years ago I had people chasing me for debt my ex had accrued (Scotland, so no bailiffs just sheriff officers), and I still have the fear of opening the door all these years later 😂

I’ve always been baffled by people on here who claim to never answer an unsolicited door knock and seem outraged at unexpected knuckles on their wood.

Not only is it odd, they must be the least curious people in the world. How dull.

It's wise to check who's there though. I was the victim of an attempted robbery by a cold caller so now I don't open the door unless I'm certain who it is and why they are there. You also have to be mindful of distraction burglaries in this weather where one keeps you talking at the front door while the other nips in your open back door.

I open the door when I can be bothered 🤷

If someone pops up unannounced, and I am busy working/in the shower/cooking/ on the phone or already in my pjs in the evening, I am not interrupting what I am doing or opening without clothes on.

Real friends don't turn up without warning - their time is not more important than mine and they wouldn't expect me to drop everything I am doing to entertain them. A bit of respect is actually quite nice.

Generally I’ll open the door. Unless it’s 2am in which case I stick my head out of the upstairs window and ask them what they want. I’m 56, live rural south, have lived in London too.

I learnt a long time ago that JWs can be got rid of with a firm clear “I’m not interested and I’d like you to leave.” Followed by “Now” and a hard stare if they dither.

I look out if the window first. If I don’t know them I answer the door with the chain on. In the hope it may save me from a madman!

I'm almost 30. I don't answer the door to anyone trying to spout religious shit at me. But other than that I answer the door to anyone.

He probably would be so surprised you'd have time to slam the door. Bit pointless against the axe, but every second counts

YANBU. I always answer the door. I never answer my landline phone to though as nobody has the number so it is guaranteed to be a cold call

We've got a Ring doorbell, a gobshite dog and a drive that leads straight up to our front room windows - we see who's coming before they arrive.

The only time I've ever refused to answer the door was when our drunk neighbour came knocking a few years ago. She's quite an aggro drunk and not someone who I'd open the door to any other time, either.

I use to open it all the time. Sometimes we'd race each other to see who could answer first but then we started getting alot of cold callers. I was getting fed up with them and what made the decision final was when a man put his foot in the doorway, leaned in and shouted into my face. I thought I would be able to handle situations like this but I froze his strength scared me too, he only leaned in without any real force and I nearly fell over. So after that I don't answer the door at all. If I see it's the postman or courier I'll answer. I've glass now so can see right out, I don't care if they see me looking and not answering.

You never know, he might be a nervous axe murderer in training and you just might catch him out

I don't always answer the door! I agree with PafLeChien, if I'm not expecting anything/anyone then I won't stop what I'm doing if I'm in the middle of something. I know people who would jump out of the bath and run down the stairs in a towel to answer the door! I find that weirder. I don't answer the phone if I don't want to either I'm 29.

I would open it, but my 3yo always beats me. She lives in hope of the social contact of being able to wave at a delivery man from a distance if she’s quick enough to get there before they’ve completely disappeared (feel a bit sad that she’s that desperate to see people!)

I always open the door. I find it very odd that not opening it is a thing. The suspense of not knowing who it is and/or what they want would kill me. I always assume people avoiding bailiffs don't answer the door

I order a shit-ton of stuff online so it's usually a delivery person There is some blasted child who keeps trying to sell me delicious fudge. I'm tempted not to open the door to him but he can see us in our living room when he comes up the drive.

I don’t answer it unless I can see it’s a delivery. Friends and family do not randomly knock at my door, although I’d probably answer if they did, as long as it wasn’t late. I’ve ignored the door to people I know in the evenings if I’m in my pyjamas and don’t feel presentable. Especially if I think they’re going to want to come in.
My real friends are not like this though so would never knock on my door in the evening out of the blue.

I answer the door after checking the spyhole. I don't open the door if it looks like chuggers, pedlars or Jehova's witnesses but I would open it to anyone else.

Why wouldn't you answer the door if someone knocks ? Yes the world is full of weirdo's, the are the ones that are too scared of human interaction
