I find this concept so far from my reality that I always contribute something sarcastic on the threads... but it made me think, AM I in the minority? Is this an actual thing ? Personally I would NEVER not answer the door... is this because I live in a quiet village in the Highlands.. or because I have scant regard for the worst of human kind...and will come a cropper.

YANBU = I always answer the door , why would I not

YABU = It could be someone wishing to do you harm and not worth the risk, be it a parent , parent-in-law, psychotic axe murderer...

Age would be helpful to understand this mindset (but not essential obvs)

mostly, no, if I am not expecting a delivery.
I would have very few visitors, so on balance it's going to be a religious person or someone selling something and I'm not really interested.

TheFuckingDogs · 21/05/2020 19:44

Yanbu - always answer the door, too nosey not to

OnlyThenWhen · 21/05/2020 19:45

I'm 30s, BTW, and I don't have any fears for my safety. I just CBA to deal with persistent doorstep nuisances!

lokoho · 21/05/2020 19:46

Nowadays, in my friendly town in the dales, I always open the door.

I lived half my life in an extremely deprived inner city area notorious for gang violence. One of my classmates was shot to death on his doorstep when I was at sixth form. When I lived there, I looked through the spy hole!

Spied · 21/05/2020 19:48

Yanbu
I absolutely MUST open the door.
I spend hours ruminating about who and why there was a knock if, for example, I've been in the bath and not ran downstairs quick enough.

ParkheadParadise · 21/05/2020 19:48

Yes I'm a door opener.
I don't actually know anyone who isn't.

SpokeTooSoon · 21/05/2020 19:53

I’m selective. Luckily I have a spy hole and you can’t see inside at all from the front step so nobody can see that I’m in. I also keep the chain on when I’m at home. I know this sounds a bit odd. I’m a normal person and welcome friends and family with open arms. But we have a LOT of scammers and teatowel sellers, kids I don’t know collecting for some random charity, people wanting me to sign up to charities and startup businesses. We get a LOT of it so that’s why I am now very careful about opening the door.

Tedgy · 21/05/2020 20:12

I always answer the door, and for bonus points, I answer the phone too.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 21/05/2020 20:18

Lots of people are missing the fact that you can answer without opening the door fully, or often even at all...

I always answer unless inconvenient. For example after shower or when I have my hands dirty. It's usually nothing important, but my front door are not miles away and it can be important.
"No thank you" to sellers. No need to sob and shake while lying on the floor so no one can see me insideGrin

AlecOrAlonzo · 21/05/2020 20:19

My neighbours knock and open. There's very little time lag!

Devlesko · 21/05/2020 20:22

I always look before I answer but unless they look like they're selling something, I answer.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/05/2020 20:28

I don't answer my front door unless I'm expecting someone. There's no reason for someone to knock my door unsolicited that I believe merits me acknowledging it, so I simply don't bother. It's a request after all, not some sort of legally binding demand that compels you to respond to their knock.

Same with the telephone. I don't answer unsolicited telephone calls or calls from numbers I don't recognise.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 21/05/2020 20:28

I always open the door, I’m too curious! Plus it could be a parcel.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 21/05/2020 20:29

I'm a " if I can be bothered unless expecting a parcel then I race to the door because if DP gets there first it gets put somewhere random , that he forgets about and I spend an hour looking for it "

I'm 40 by the way but not sure that matters , I've always been a bit anti social.

Mind you these days if DP cross the m25 to get to me unannounced without calling....I definitely don't want to hear what they have to say. Dsis would expect a hatchet thrown at her for unexpected pop ins and if dp's dm turned up from Wales....the world has been invaded by aliens....hmmm I might open the door to her...if she can evidence she is not a pod person. Those are really the only options for people we know turning up unannounced.

rottiemum88 · 21/05/2020 20:30

Always open the door. We have two very large Rottweilers, unsavouries don't tend to call here Grin

LakieLady · 21/05/2020 20:36

Having spent the best part of 30 years living with dogs that can open doors, then turn themselves invisible so that they can slither past you unnoticed and escape, I got out of the habit of opening the door to anyone that I wasn't going to invite in.

We have a bay window at the front and one of them opens right next to that, so I lean out like a mad fishwife and ask them what they want.

Anyone peddling god-bothering nonsense gets told to fuck off. If there is a god, I'm surely going to hell.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 21/05/2020 20:37

Im the same as @wanderingmilly....i was brought up to always answer the phone and door and its taken me years to break the habit...my mum fell down the stairs one day in her rush to answer the landline....my friends and family dont drop in unannounced so its usually someone trying to flog me something i dont want....i save myself the hassle and dont answer the door.

nokidshere · 21/05/2020 20:38

I can see (and hear thanks to a loose slab) someone coming to my door. If it's someone I know I just shout 'come in', if I don't know them I answer. Very occasionally its JW and I don't bother.

But from about May onwards if I'm in the living room I just leave the front door wide open anyway because I like lots of air.

I'm 59

CherryPavlova · 21/05/2020 20:39

The doors often open in this warm weather. It’s rarely locked and if I don’t answer people usually walk in anyway.
I can’t imagine not answering the door.

Hadjab · 21/05/2020 20:43

Opener - I’m a grown up who can tell JWs/Salesmen etc I’m interested.

Hadjab · 21/05/2020 20:43

*not

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 21/05/2020 20:43

I hang out my window to see who it is first (classy) Friends don't 'pop in', they always check as they're not rude. If it's someone unsolicited ie JW's or folk with a petition I yell a cheery no thanks and shut my window!

Livpool · 21/05/2020 20:45

I always open the door - I think most people I know would 🤷🏼‍♀️

heartsonacake · 21/05/2020 20:49

I only answer the door if I’m expecting someone/something. I’m in my thirties.

I think it’s terribly rude to pop in unannounced.

AJPTaylor · 21/05/2020 20:50

I always open the door unless I have spotted through the window that they are flogging religion
