I find this concept so far from my reality that I always contribute something sarcastic on the threads... but it made me think, AM I in the minority? Is this an actual thing ? Personally I would NEVER not answer the door... is this because I live in a quiet village in the Highlands.. or because I have scant regard for the worst of human kind...and will come a cropper.

YANBU = I always answer the door , why would I not

YABU = It could be someone wishing to do you harm and not worth the risk, be it a parent , parent-in-law, psychotic axe murderer...

Age would be helpful to understand this mindset (but not essential obvs)

YABU. I don’t think they’d do me harm but if someone hasn’t told me they’re coming I’m not interested (fed up with buying tea towels and spider catchers I don’t want).

If it's someone I know/ am expecting or parcels for us or neighbours then I open the door. If it's anyone I'd rather not see I don't.
I always check who it is through the window if I can first (without being seen). Our front door has 2 long bits of frosted glass so anyone outside would be able to see the outline of a person there, otherwise I'd use the spy hole. (Hate our front door. Hopefully we will be moving soon, if we don't I'll finally get round to getting something to hang over the glass in the door).

happymummy12345 · 21/05/2020 20:53

I'm 27

Jeleste · 21/05/2020 20:56

I usually dont open the door when im not expecting anyone. The post just drops parcels at the door and rings, then they leave. So unless someone is ringing a few times or im expecting someone, i just assume its not important.

Natsku · 21/05/2020 20:56

I open the door if I hear it, but as we don't have a working doorbell and the outside door is hard to hear because of the porch, I don't always answer. But I'm glad I'm not someone who doesn't answer because once it was the police in the middle of the night bringing DD home!

Friends don't knock though, they just walk right in as our doors are always unlocked in the day,

LockdownLoppy · 21/05/2020 20:57

I open the door. Dh and I were once woken by someone hammering the door at 3am.It was next door neighbours teenage son in a terrible state, we took him in, calmed hin down and helped him to find his key to get in (dad was away). We never really got to the bottom of what went on but the lad was terrified. We told his dad as we felt he shoukd know.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/05/2020 21:00

It depends on the time of day. Live in a residential part of the city.
I always look through the glass but generally open it in the day light.
My hall door doesn't lock automatically I leave it unlocked lots in the day though I shouldn't there is high opportunists crime.

Fluffybutter · 21/05/2020 21:02

Yabu, it was learnt from when I lived alone with my son at 17 on not a very nice estate !

Fluffybutter · 21/05/2020 21:03

Should add I live in a ‘naice’ area now with a dh ,teen and 9 year old but if I don’t recognise you and I’m not expecting anyone then I ignore it

B0bbin · 21/05/2020 21:10

I always answer in case it's a parcel

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 21/05/2020 21:10

Oh and its not that I'm scared, I just don't want to waste time.

HavelockVetinari · 21/05/2020 21:10

I always answer the door, although when DS was a very little baby, in the VERY unusual circumstances he took a nap in his cot I'd curse the very marrow of anyone who rang the fucking doorbell when I had a chance of sleep (he was a hideous sleeper, woke every 45 mins).

LastTrainEast · 21/05/2020 21:14

It's an intercom here, but the same principle. No one I know would visit without texting first. As well as people who want to tell me about Jesus we have people who come to visit friends and don't know their door number. I find this very odd, but they just press any button and say "I wanna see Fred or 'it's me!'

I got tired of this quickly so I stopped answering it.

Also given my area it could be one of my neighbours desperate for money for drugs.

bullyingadvice2017 · 21/05/2020 21:15

Sometimes I hear the door and i might not feel like speaking to anyone right now, may be working, cooking, having a shower, a nap, or just a bad day.

in a mess and not want it to be my mother in law...
Or my lovely elderly neighbour that I have lots of time for and do speak with him often but he just dosent get me saying I have to go... and I know I will be stood there an hour as he's lonely and i think a lot of him.

I actually have 2 popper winners who are welcome anytime, day or night and they know the secret knock! 🤣

Its the same with the phone.

halfmoonbay · 21/05/2020 21:16

I never answer the front door, there is a window next to the front door which I open if I need to see who it is or speak to delivery driver etc. My door - my choice is the way I see it.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 21/05/2020 21:17

Almost always open the door (although not if we're having a lie in!) I guess I grew in an era where friends came to your door all the time, because it was expensive to phone first. I'm 54, south of England. If I was at home on my own and felt vaguely worried by someone I could see through the glass I might put the chain on first, but the chain has been taken off the door "temporarily" for a couple of years now and I haven't really missed it.

DownADirtRoad · 21/05/2020 21:18

Is this about the other thread? If it is I think the OP was right to not answer the door to her father as she said he would have forced his way in. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I answer the door to people who I don’t think will force their way into my house, yes.

minielise · 21/05/2020 21:21

By the time we’ve finished bickering about who is going to answer it, and found the door keys we’ve usually missed it!

GinDaddyRedux · 21/05/2020 21:21

The irony of people on here being theatrically wary of creeps or nefarious sorts so they proudly proclaim "I have a Ring doorbell"...

..yeah, the same one that's regularly been hacked by nefarious sorts and creeps who get access to your WiFi network...

AnneElliott · 21/05/2020 21:23

I avoid if it's the JWs. I pretend not to be in! Other than that I'll open the door unless it's late.

TheGinGenie · 21/05/2020 21:25

I usually answer the door but I live alone so I am cautious and always look who it is first. I do know people who don't answer because of bailiffs so I don't think it's always unreasonable not to answer.

begoniapot · 21/05/2020 21:27

If I see the jehovas witnesses doing the rounds I hide behind the soda too. Occasionally I can't be bothered to answer the door (if it's the window cleaner and I don't have the money) but normally I do. Why wouldn't you? I live in a safe village so little crime, but I don't think that's relevant.

TheGinGenie · 21/05/2020 21:28

I almost never answer the phone though, no-one has my landline number so that's always a cold call. I'll answer calls from people in my contacts or when I'm expecting one but everyone else I let it go to answerphone and will call them back.

begoniapot · 21/05/2020 21:28

JW's also go away if you say 'I'm a committed catholic' lol

amusedbush · 21/05/2020 21:29

I’m 30 and don’t answer the door if I’m not expecting someone.

I also don’t answer the phone to blocked numbers - if it’s important they’ll leave a message.
