To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

I'm told it's worse north of here and here (Dudley) is pretty crap so heaven help you if you go further north.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/05/2020 20:56

I don't know much about the north of England, have only made a handful of visits up there and only been to Scotland two or three times. Have very much enjoyed my visits to Manchester, Derbyshire, Sheffield, Durham, Newcastle, the Lakes, Edinburgh and Glasglow - but purely as a tourist.

All of my family live in the south and Wales, furthest cousin north is in Northamptonshire.

I am sure it's all lovely but, apart from the fact I don't know a living soul who lives in the north of England, what could never persuade me to live up there is the cold. It's dismal enough in the warmest, sunniest part of the UK - I just couldn't stand the weather any further north than where I live now.

I don't think quality of life differs enormously other than that though?

NotMeNoNo · 17/05/2020 20:56

OP where do you currently live and have you traveled much in the UK? The north of England basically gets better the further you go, and I say that as a Midland resident who would love to live further north.

Re Warwickshire and Leicestershire, I’ve lived in both, suggest listen to a few episodes of the Archers for a realistic idea of village/small town life.

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 20:56

@KKSlider - you can afford stottie cakes? Tch, overprivileged much? I'm just mashing the keyboard with a lump of mud..

Lemonblast · 17/05/2020 20:57

They don’t have Waitrose north of Slough.

herecomesgeralt · 17/05/2020 20:57

Yes it's oh so grim, as you can see Confused

It's hard with no leccy, running water or gas. My 3 all sleep in one room as does our entire extended family

OhTheRoses · 17/05/2020 20:58

Grin the north that DH comes from is luffly. The north that MIL moved to is grim.. glass half full/glass half empty. It's all about the inner psyche.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/05/2020 20:58

Oh dear, I made cardinal error of posting without reading the thread. Will bow out now.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/05/2020 20:58

Warwickshire and Leicestershire do have general anesthetics. The North don't. They operate on you without anaesthetic

This is an outright LIE!

When my kids had their legs amputated so they could fit under the looms in the mill to pick up cut bits of cotton, they were each given a Lemsip to dull the pain! All 14 of them!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/05/2020 20:59

Aye they do, lass. There's one in Preston! But they don't have Booths down south...

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 21:00

@SchadenfreudePersonified You are clearly posh. We had to gnaw our OWN legs off.

Camomila · 17/05/2020 21:00

@herecomesgeralt I love the 3rd picture, looks like Diagon Alley. Is it Edinburgh?

Annacarter · 17/05/2020 21:01

@Lemonblast we do have Booths though!!
In all seriousness, we moved up first to St. Helens then Greater Manchester from Buckinghamshire just over a year ago and hate it so pre-covid were interviewing for jobs back down south. This is probably more to do with ending up in the wrong area (Skelmersdale for jobs) and being used to lovely rolling countryside which doesn't really happen between Manchester and Liverpool. So it's a no from me but there is a lot more north than this little patch and when we've driven about 40 minutes we've been on some lovely walks in really nice looking areas.

LockedInMadness · 17/05/2020 21:01

I'm just bashing a stottie cake against the keyboard and hoping it forms words.

🤣

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/05/2020 21:01

I'm from Durham, just god awful there, ask all the southern students.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 17/05/2020 21:01

No avocados up here thank you!
Chips and gravy for breakfast, dinner and tea Grin

alphajuliet123 · 17/05/2020 21:02

Definitely do not move up north. The fresher air, stunning countryside friendliness and clearly superior sense of humour, are all absolutely unbearable.

StealthPolarBear · 17/05/2020 21:02

Ooh get you with yer mill working children. Mine are still going up chimneys. Mind it saves money on baths, there's literally no point.

herecomesgeralt · 17/05/2020 21:02

@Camomila York! As it happens they have a lot of HP shops around there, it has a very ethereal vibe.

user1471565182 · 17/05/2020 21:03

Its York, Camomila.

Do they have cooplands outside of yorkshire?

KKSlider · 17/05/2020 21:03

Do NOT tell them about Booths.

What is the first rule of Booths Club?

chomalungma · 17/05/2020 21:03

Your mistake was looking at Lancashire.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/05/2020 21:03

Now St Helen’s and Skem are grim.
