To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

It's awful. The national parks are shit, the cities smell, and everyone is grumpy all the time. I wouldn't bother coming here.

tarasmalatarocks · 17/05/2020 20:36

The crappiest areas I’ve lived in have all been in the Midlands . But that’s just me, others may have found them totally ok. There are good bits and bad bits absolutely everywhere including London and it’s what suits you and your expectations, you can have a very ‘yuppy’ Life in Liverpool and the Wirral for instance , saddleworth nr Manchester or Roundhay in leeds- all ‘up north’ last time I looked .

LaurieFairyCake · 17/05/2020 20:36

Depends what you want

If you want the weather you need to be in London - it's so built up it's at least 3 degrees above the rest of the country at all times

Tomorrow Newcastle has a high of 18
London 23

IWouldDie4U · 17/05/2020 20:36

Sorry (not) to be rude - but the North will manage just fine without a small minded person like you.

Bluebird3456 · 17/05/2020 20:37

Lol. Don't know what you were expecting with that one. People who choose to live in the north obviously like it. I love it. We tend not to like snobs though, just saying Grin

1Morewineplease · 17/05/2020 20:37

They eat whippets ‘t’up North! And they don’t even speak English!

In reality, as someone who grew up in the Midlands and who now lives down south, but has holidayed muchly in the North, I can honestly say that I’d move North like a shot.

You’ll never find friendlier people , the air is fantastic, the scenery is top notch , foodies are exceptionally well catered for, there’s so much to see and do and property prices are more normal.

As to Warwickshire and Worcestershire ( know them well) , it’s very twee there and , in many villages , you’ll need a boat or a horse to compete.
( Dons hard hat and ducks.)

BakedCam · 17/05/2020 20:38

Gosh, OP, don't move to Warwickshire, Shakespeare reportedly died from the clap.

Marginally better than the North though, Warwickshire and Leicestershire do have general anesthetics. The North don't. They operate on you without anaesthetic. If you've got any kids, they'll be removed to work in the mills.

Stay where you are love. IT IS NOT SAFE.

Cherrysoup · 17/05/2020 20:38

Yes, it's fucking awful. The streets are running with shit. Don't come here

It's awful. Don't even dream of it. We barely have electricity and eat our pets to survive the winter

Pissing myself here!

Right, sensibly, property can be ridiculously cheap. The beaches along the coast of Northumberland are yellow sand, beautiful. There are forests, stunning countryside, lakes, some very good shopping, some excellent schools, including the one I went to.

My only downside is that, inevitably, it is colder. Depending on area, it can rain a lot and of course, the coast on the north east can be windy.

Housing by the coast is generally more expensive than more inland, so Whitley Bay will cost you lots more than certain suburbs of Newcastle.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2020 20:39

Absolutely nowt wrong with the North - friendliest people you could meet.

(Ssshhh. Don't tell them. If enough southerners come up here we'll end up knowing what quinoa is, having avocado on toast for breakfast and not saying hello in the street. Unless you want dry chips and congestion shut the fuck up.)

You are right OP. I live in Lancashire, it's awful. It's not worth having a 4 bed detached, in a lovely area, with an enormous garden because you have to put up with crime and being called pet and.....(checks stereotype list)....whippets. Don't move north, I hear Milton Keynes is lovely if you like roundabouts.

Lovestonap · 17/05/2020 20:39

Urgh, yes, the North, and its national parks and outstanding areas of natural beauty.... Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!

(side-note, am devastated that my easter holiday to the North York Moors got cancelled and am really hoping things open up by August! Please open the North up again! I promise I won't bring any corona with me!!)

Notmyrealname855 · 17/05/2020 20:40

I don’t think you’d like our wickerman ceremonies or the smell.... we’re also covered in dirt and soot from the mines and mills Biscuit

Slumcat · 17/05/2020 20:40

Nah it’s rubbish I’m always slipping on beef dripping and loosing my flat cap, tabs and ale be cheaper though, and Greggs

LockedInMadness · 17/05/2020 20:40

Bloody hell, what with this and the 'middle class towns' thread, what the hell has happened to mn recently? Hmm

Cherrysoup · 17/05/2020 20:40

@SpinMill a single newspaper as a blanket

A whole newspaper? You lucky, lucky people!

PeppaisaBitch · 17/05/2020 20:41

Is London all full of gangs, pic pockets and stabbings?

Wheresthesanitygone · 17/05/2020 20:42

Roundhay’s not posh anymore tarasma if you want to yuppie OP don’t go there 😀

helpmum2003 · 17/05/2020 20:42

It's awful, don't move up here.

SerenDippitty · 17/05/2020 20:43

Don't come to Wales either. It's a backward deprived shithole.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 17/05/2020 20:43

Aye it’s grim, we also sacrifice stuck up southerners at every given opportunity so you best keep away!

AuntieMarys · 17/05/2020 20:44

And the houses are so bloody cheap.

YouTheCat · 17/05/2020 20:44

I live in a lake and eat cold gravel.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/05/2020 20:44

It's like hell on earth.Do not come here!!! (We dont want you)

MissCharleyP · 17/05/2020 20:45

Depends. I moved from NW England to SE England for work as I could not get a job, or at least a job that paid anything above minimum wage. I absolutely loved living within half an hour of London and not having to drive (I hate driving and unless you live in a city you’ll have to), I’m tearing up now writing this. I’d move back in a heartbeat.

To cut a long, boring story short. I met my DH at work and we lived in a cheaper area of the Home Counties, both got made redundant and sold up there and moved back to my hometown as we could buy outright and obviously, neither of us was working. DH took his pension when he got made redundant.

I wish we’d had more time to look at other areas, either in the North nearer to/in a city or the Midlands or a slightly cheaper area a bit further out of London. Or DHs home city - but that’s expensive now as well. But we didn’t want to buy somewhere we weren’t familiar with and I knew my town and which areas to avoid etc.

I found it VERY difficult to get a full-time job, had one for six months on a temp contract but the department (there were four of us) were all let go at the end. Jobs generally aren’t as well paid here and much harder to come by. COVID aside, the only jobs in my town are minimum wage; unless you have one of the usual professions: doctor, lawyer, teacher etc.

Where I lived before had a 24 hour train service, it was 30-45 minutes into London with direct connections to loads of different places. We have talked about possibly moving again one day and I play the lottery a few times a week to help!

I'm voting for a sacrifice of op at the stone circle. Any takers for ritual pagan sacrifices?
