Classroom Lessons via Zoom

AIBU to expect the teachers at my daughter’s rs primary school to offer at least some lessons via Zoom? The feedback I have been given is that that they aren’t offering it due to a) safeguarding issues, and b) it would add to the teachers workload. Well, surely if we parents consent for our child to sign in for these lessons then no safeguarding issue. Plus, at present, we parents are doing at least 60% of the teachers work for them via homeschooling. (I appreciate that they are setting work for the children, but this is part of the planning they would do anyway).

Yeah go for it - if you want porn images flashing up halfway through a lesson. Better to use Microsoft teams.

The fact that you think that 60% of their workload is printing off a worksheet and explaining a concept for five minutes says it all for me really.

Complain to the school or add your comments to another of the many teacher bashing threads

If schools are told not to use Zoom-it’s hardly the teachers’ fault.

Actually, when you send your child to school the teachers are doing your job for you. Your child's education is your responsibility.

But I understand it's frustrating.

Does it have to be zoom specially?

We have a ban at my school on using video lessons at the moment. This may be relaxed once school have researched the safety of the technology and now that we know we will be doing lessons remotely for a lot longer (secondary)

Why don't parents realise that there are huge safeguarding issues here as well as issues surrounding equality ( a family with three children struggling to make ends meet won't have three separate devices for three separate zoom.meetings) this is not equivalent to an office department meeting carried out on zoom involving several adults in their dining rooms on their work laptops.

You do know that huge numbers of teachers also have their own children and are in the same position as you trying to home school? Could you conduct a lesson with 30 pupils while your child was running around in their pants in the background trying to nip you over the head with a plastic T-rex? Cause that's what remote learning is looking like in half the teachers houses I know...

We are not 'working/teaching from home', we are coping during a pandemic and trying to do our job to the best of our ability in the circumstances.

Plus I can't think anything worst than a lesson via Zoom. It's (friendly) chaos enough when there's a kids birthday gathering, absolutely not suitable for a proper lesson.
Plus I have things to do during the day, I can't schedule my work around my kids zoom meetings

I totally agree. They need to deliver actual lessons. It's astonishing that isn't happening yet.

Between our children (age 6-13) they are enjoying online dance classes, drama classes, cubs sessions, instrument lessons.... (All paid for. These clubs all switched within a couple of weeks of lockdown) .

Our 9 year olds haven't heard their teachers voices since lockdown began (different schools so not like it is just one teacher).

My six year old is loving her online dance classes and really look forward to them

Bore off, love! Yet another whinge about teachers. If you’re not happy, speak to the school. As you’re such an expert home schooler, why do you even need their input? They are also in the same position as you, trying to work and look after their own children.

I did one lesson via zoom, with no audio or video - just chat. This was with the agreement of the head. 20 mins in, someone invaded the lesson with porn and racist abuse. Turns out the student (v middle class, leafy suburb type school) had shared the link to his mate. It was just ‘banter’. I’m not tutoring him anymore and no one in our Trust is using zoom.

@Guiltyfeminist1 it is starting to feel to me that a lot of teachers are prioritising teaching their own children over teaching their classes.
I am starting to lose a lot of respect for teachers. I still have to do my own job from home and am still expected to deliver to the same standard.

Well @LaraLoui is all you normally do in a schook day hand out one worksheet from Twinkl and tell the children about the move time you just had walking the dog? Because otherwise I, and many other parents, are doing the teachers jobs at the moment.

I don't think you have a very good understanding of safeguarding if you think parental consent resolves that issue.

I also think you have a very poor grasp of what teachers do.

I have DC at two schools. One is using video calling for classes, the teachers are teaching and it's a joy to see and hear. The other school is sending photocopies home. No feedback, no interaction, at one point no answers for us to check the work and no chance of them doing it. Not all teachers are doing brilliantly but not all are awful. But we should be able to praise the good and call out the bad. It may not be the teachers ot may be the SLT some good, some bad. We should be able to call it.

At some point teachers are going to have to pick between delivering proper lessons online (and the technology exists for this - all the private schools are managing) or having the schools reopen.

I am happy to have my children at home indefinitely. But not if the teachers aren't teaching. I have to do my own (vital ) job supporting some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Google Oak national academy, go on, knock yourself out, 15 minute slots of lessons for primary or secondary. We’re not allowed to do live lessons. I’m not going to go against what management are telling me.

It's not teacher bashing to say it how it is.

While children in private schools and those whose parents (and there are many) are now paying for private tutors are steaming ahead, many other children aren't getting anything more than a Twinkl worksheet and a link to the BBC bitesize. If teachers are saying this is in any way ok then I question their vocation.

ahem... and WHO is going to pay for that technology exactly? Have you seen the budget the schools were dealing with? Have you seen the budget of a private school....

You are confusing completely separate issues. Your school is not a private business, and the teachers are the ones deciding to open or not.. They have as much say as you or I.

Many parents are absolutely against reopening the schools too soon and in the wrong condition. Nothing to do with the actual teachers.
