Nodding through these powers

I just don't know CallItLoneliness, I just don't know. I would need a lot more information before I had an opinion on what would be 'best'.

What I do know, is that there is no 'good' option, only less bad ones.

rwalker · 14/05/2020 06:57

I don’t think the success of CV can be measured till it’s eradicated
NZ has a massive advantage of low population and vast country it’s completely stupid to make like for like compassions
Uk had nearly twice the population squashed into the m25 circle as they have in there entire vast country

TheClaws · 14/05/2020 06:58

New Zealand is not “vast”.

FredaFrogspawn · 14/05/2020 07:01

Just an aside - NZ have just had a lovely summer and so are loaded with vitamin D. I hope they keep those levels up with supplements - there is growing evidence that this will protect to a degree if there is a second wave. They cannot stay in their bubble forever.

pollyglot · 14/05/2020 07:16

It's only just over 5 weeks till the shortest day here. I'm still in shorts and tee-shirts in the garden, soaking up that Vit D all day.

antisocialdistance · 14/05/2020 07:18

They cannot stay in their bubble forever.

Why not though?

heartyrebel · 14/05/2020 07:20

NZ is approximately the same size land mass as the UK, but only 5 million population

Enb76 · 14/05/2020 07:23

NZ are the boy in the bubble. With many countries not attempting to eradicate this virus and neither a vaccine nor an effective treatment on the horizon at what point can they reopen to the rest of the world?

antisocialdistance · 14/05/2020 07:37

NZ are the boy in the bubble. With many countries not attempting to eradicate this virus and neither a vaccine nor an effective treatment on the horizon at what point can they reopen to the rest of the world?

NZ can reopen travel borders gradually to countries in a similar elimination position with similarly excellent trace and isolate systems. Australia looks likely to achieve elimination and they are NZ's largest trading and tourism partner. Taiwan. Dare I say... China, the second largest trading partner. Trade borders are still largely open.

The virus seems like to continue to ravage Europe, the UK and the States in waves and genuine herd immunity will likely never be achieved until a vaccine is created. So NZ is not in such a different position to everyone else in needing a vaccine or effective treatment... just with exponentially less death, mental health issues, everyday fear and probably a more stable economy.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 14/05/2020 07:42

Kept people alive tho hasn't it ? 💁🏻‍♀️

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 14/05/2020 07:45

As an Aussie, I very much view Kiwis as 'Us' and am making a deliberate effort to buy from them as much as I am trying to buy Australian. If the borders re-open to us, they will be on the table as much as other Australian destinations as far as travel goes.

CallItLoneliness · 14/05/2020 07:52

Jacinda Ardern has already been making moves to attract international businesses. Once NZ has eliminated COVID a 2 week quarrantine for staff isn't much price to pay for the massively reduced risk...

violetbunny · 14/05/2020 08:03

Kiwi here. All I'll say is that I'm still very happy to be in NZ vs most other counties at the moment! DP is British and also very relieved he is here.

violetbunny · 14/05/2020 08:03

*countries not Counties!

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:07

Grin lots of English people view Scottish people as 'us' - the feeling isn't necessarily mutual. Much like canadian travellers back in the day making a big point of NOT being American I remember Kiwis being the same if potentially mistaken for Australians. Maybe that's changed dramatically - i'm getting on a bit and my proper travelling days were about 15-20 years ago.

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:11

And even Africaans and South Africans felt their distinction quite important being entirely different groups despite both being white and living in South Africa.

My ability to distinguish between American and Canadian accents, Aussies and Kiwis and Africaans and South Africans developed whilst young and traveling has actually served me really well in lots of situations since. People really appreciate it when you get it right where they're from (mostly the canadian, kiwi, africaan side of those pairs) which can mean much better service for one thing.

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:13

Sorry totally derail-ing the thread. No sleep and quite chatty.

Oaktree55 · 14/05/2020 08:22

Yes obviously keeping the death rate to near zero and extinguishing the epidemic protecting citizens is clearly an infringement of human rights. Christ do some people even have a brain 🤦🏽‍♀️

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 14/05/2020 08:31

Nah, my experience of travelling was that Aussie/Kiwis were 'Us' and sometimes the South Africans. It was all very chummy. Unless. The. Rugby. Was. On.

Then there was no "Us" only "Them". [Grin]

WhatWouldJasonBourneDo · 14/05/2020 08:34

It has to be parties/gatherings in private homes. Or something like that.

NZ has been on a hardcore lockdown for over a month and still they're seeing new cases.

A small minority of people are flouting the law and these powers will allow them to be shut down.

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:35

It all got very serious if a pool table was found as I recall. Brits and antipodeans 'got' that we weren't going to actually fight we were just affectionately 'playing' with deep banter. Other nationalities tended to shrink back from the table thinking something was about to kick off Grin

Irish, English, Aussies and Kiwis tended to enjoy the 'craic' whilst other europeans and americans looked very nervous

eaglejulesk · 14/05/2020 08:38

@antisocialdistance - well said!

Regarding Vitamin D - we have more sunshine in winter than the UK does, and certainly there is plenty at the moment. It's forgotten how to rain in much of the country.

By the way - we love to hate Aussies, but if it comes to taking on the rest of the world then we stand shoulder to shoulder Smile

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:38

This was north africa/the middle east in mid to late 90's.

After that you fuckers all disappeared. Kiwis, Aussies, South Africans gone - who knows where. Suddenly everyone was speaking German. Then by 2005 or so everyone was russian. Bizarre how the demographic changed.

LiesHumansTellThemselves · 14/05/2020 08:38

Ah Americans. Who do not understand the method of showing deep affection by being as rudely insulting as possible.

If I am being polite to you, it means I have either only just met you and am still in formal mode, OR I can't stand you, and think you are a twat.

I would never be rude to a stranger/someone I don't like!

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2020 08:41

By the way - we love to hate Aussies, but if it comes to taking on the rest of the world then we stand shoulder to shoulder. Love this.

Another silly memory is playing Risk with some Irish dudes once and they'd made a board. Where the UK should have been there was a massive Ireland Grin

I miss taking the piss out of each others nationalities and histories. It's all gotten very serious.
