Death by M&S Ready Meals

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 19:43

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

I'm so hungry

SpillTheTeaa · 13/05/2020 22:02

I don't even look at the salt content when I see something I like Blush oops

2littlledarlings · 13/05/2020 22:02

Ffs give yourself a break..these aren’t normal times & as long as these aren’t your staple diet you’ll be fine! Enjoy, there M&S so they’ll be lovely-think of it as a one off treat

Kraejka · 13/05/2020 22:05

Thank fuck.
The OP's back and alive.

MsSquiz · 13/05/2020 22:09

TBF, that pie is bloody tasty! DH and I shared ours and had a heap of veg and mash with it!

Ready meals aren't usually eaten every meal, every day and so can balance out the salt/fat/sugar content! Just balance it out with cereal, fresh fruit & veg, none processed protein and you'll be fine. A few ready meals definitely won't kill you!

OP, did you honestly just say you never use salt in your cooking? What, never? I find that quite hard to believe!

Casualbride · 13/05/2020 22:11

This is possibly my favourite Mumsnet expose ever...m&s in luxury meat pie high in salt shocker.

glasgow357 · 13/05/2020 22:18

I've had M&S deliveroo. I got healthy stuff 🤷‍♀️

Praiseyou · 13/05/2020 22:23

It all balances anyway as DH eats more than he should so my lack of salt doesn't have any effect on the universal salt intake.

What is the universal salt intake?

Bluntness100 · 13/05/2020 22:25

Do people eat like this 3 times a day

Do you mean you don’t? Who doesn’t eat three steak pies a day?

Stop being a drama llama. It’s not going to knock you sick. Calm down.

glasgow357 · 13/05/2020 22:26

But only because they didn't have any four cheese ravioli in their tomato sauce 😍😍

Candyflosscookie · 13/05/2020 22:26

Over reaction much? Hmm what did you expect, a pie made from unicorn tears and fairy wisps?

HowdyBubble · 13/05/2020 22:32

I agree with a lot of posters on here - it's not ideal but as long as you're using it as a stepping stone to recover, it won't make you ill (unless you have allergies/ food intolerances to any of the ingredients). If you continued to eat it all year around, yes it could make you ill (e.g. cause obesity, skin issues, digestion issues, etc.)

For food that's salty, just make sure you drink a lot of water before and after eating - to stop you feeling the uncomfortable effects of dehydration and keep active (some gentle exercise at least a few times a week)

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 13/05/2020 22:38

Dont patronise us OP. You know full well ready meals are high in salt

Its not going to cause you any harm. And how do you think your going to get calories in without eating fat or sugar?

Also have I made a mistake and you ordered a takeaway instead of eating your readymeal 🙄

Leflic · 13/05/2020 22:39

You want a Fray Bentos tin. Old school. Know as Babies Head. Half the salt and all the ingredients are recognisable.

TheRoyallingStones · 13/05/2020 22:48

Oh do get a grip

You CHOSE three meals which were clearly going to be full of fat! M&S have plenty of healthier options but you chose pies and luxury lasagne and then clutched your pearls about them having fat and salt in. A situation you could easily have avoided by choosing different options.

Saying it’ll make you ill is just bonkers and a ridiculous overreaction.

CorianderLord · 13/05/2020 22:48

You've bought it now so eat it and don't order them again

AnneOfTeenFables · 13/05/2020 22:48

I'm more concerned about the men in their changing rooms than the salt in their pies Hmm

CorianderLord · 13/05/2020 22:50

No people don't eat that 3x a day, it's a treat dinner

SodaSloth · 13/05/2020 22:53

Freeze it until your well then eat it.

avroroad · 13/05/2020 22:53

We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again.

It's a pie ffs.

RedRed9 · 13/05/2020 22:53

I find it so funny that you chose a pie and are shocked it’s not healthy. 😂

What did you think the ingredients would be: a head of lettuce, a pint of water and a multivitamin?

Alsohuman · 13/05/2020 22:54

I'm more concerned about the men in their changing rooms than the salt in their pies

Waste of concern when there’s nobody in their changing rooms at all.

taraRoo · 13/05/2020 22:55

You made poor choices. There are lots of healthier choices in m and s. However, if you've been ill surely some added calories and salt won't hurt you? The ingredients themselves will be good quality if not healthy. At least you have food which is less than lots of others .

RedRed9 · 13/05/2020 22:56

I couldn’t get a supermarket delivery slot so got a Deliveroo delivery

What takeaway did you get @BluSky5 ?

Thisismytimetoshine · 13/05/2020 22:57

Deliveroo deliver M & S stuff as well. But M & S don't only sell pies.
