Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

Is this information not available when ordering in the very small print?

Ragwort · 13/05/2020 23:00

Did you eat it or not? Can’t believe you would throw away a delicious M & S pie .... that’s not any old pie, it’s an M & S pie Grin.

But as a PP said, it’s a relief to read about hysteria that is not related to coronavirus.

transformandriseup · 13/05/2020 23:06

It won't make you ill but there are way better ready meals available.

Anything made with all butter pastry will be high in fat, even homemade.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 13/05/2020 23:11

Sounds amazing to be honest.

BreatheAndFocus · 13/05/2020 23:12

I love a nice fish pie - but all the ready meal ones are disgustingly high in salt 🤮 I had a nice Co-op posh one but it was so very salty, I could hardly eat it.

I don’t understand why they do it. It’s not just salty, it’s horrible and makes your mouth dry for hours. When I make fish pie, I don’t spend the next two hours gasping for a drink.

M&S should know better. I sympathise, OP. Get well soon.

KingSheathBelle · 13/05/2020 23:18

It is one pie!

Just run a marathon tomorrow to make up for it.

Thisismytimetoshine · 13/05/2020 23:20

I think you got a dodgy one, Breathe. Any food fit for human consumption shouldn't leave you gasping for a drink for two hours 😂

GabsAlot · 13/05/2020 23:26

you want food to be remade without salt because of corona

shoot me now if i cant have my fat and salt right now

Allnamesaregone · 13/05/2020 23:35

Can’t be arsed reading the thread but M&S do a couple of ranges which are healthy options- one is Count on Us - all portions under 350 cals, the other is a fuller for longer range which is high protein.
You should’ve checked before you bought. Pastry is 1/3 fat.

Cocolapew · 13/05/2020 23:38

If you have a drink that will go away. Smile

angelikacpickles · 13/05/2020 23:44

Oh for goodness sake, eat the bloody meals and stop the dramatics.

LaurieMarlow · 13/05/2020 23:50

Steak pies are fucking delicious, but not exactly a healthy option.

Did you really need M&S traffic lights to tell you that? Grin

Glitteryone · 13/05/2020 23:57

As a once off it’ll do no harm.

M&S have a brilliant ‘balanced’ range (high protein/low fat) that I buy a few off each week to have in the house for handiness.

However, I have noticed that their normal range of ready meals are very high calories & fat.

MissConductUS · 14/05/2020 00:00

That's an easy way to make them taste good to most people. People won't generally buy meals that taste like cardboard.

Nat6999 · 14/05/2020 00:47

To eat all M & S ready meals, I would have to take out a mortgage, the cost would make me ill before the food. Seriously I would imagine a lot of us are eating a crap diet at the moment, if you can afford it, don't worry.

Mintychoc1 · 14/05/2020 00:51

Re the mock exams - I meant how does a kid have exams when schools are closed?

glasgow357 · 14/05/2020 01:19

I probably have them for tea 3 times a week. The Italian range is usually 3 for £7 snd I get breakfast and lunch at with for free. It would be more expensive to cook fresh for myself. Not ashamed.

....
They aren't that expensive, no more than from anywhere else. I had an M&S deliveroo bag of goodies this week. I had spag carbonara yesterday, have a pizza and a bolognaise in the fridge and some salad. They're jolly nice and very handy.

RUSU92 · 14/05/2020 02:58

Savoury food has salt in it - shocker! And all butter pastry high in fat, who’d have thunk it?

Chill out, enjoy your pie and not having to cook and make sure you buy some lean cuisine or a jar of baby food next time to make sure it doesn’t have any fat, salt or sugar!

I bought an M&S chicken bacon and leek pie a while back. It was seriously the best pie I’ve ever eaten. And I had it with chips, with salt on.

I’m not dead, so I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Family of slugs. My comment of the day Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2020 03:19

Salt is great. People who cook without it are sad. I eat a shit load of it. DH and I have a long standing agreement that if my BP rises above optimal I have to refrain. It did once in pregnancy and thank goodness my midwife told him it wasn't salt related in pregnancy and I cracked on.

Mmmmmmmmm salt.
