Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

YANBU but it won’t hurt for a few meals if you just eat them with plenty of veg, if you have any? 😬

Pukkatea · 13/05/2020 19:46

YABU. All ready meals are salty and saying it will make you ill is just ridiculous. Don't eat it if you don't want to but would be a real waste.

z0fl0ra · 13/05/2020 19:47

That first one is shocking, 133% of daily sat fat Shock

flamegame · 13/05/2020 19:48

Yeah eat them with bags of microwaved veg - some of their plant kitchen and other ranges are pretty healthy. Who can blame you for making dodgy food choices with that setup!

Haggisfish · 13/05/2020 19:49

Well in fairness anything smoked will be high in fat, as will anything involving all butter pastry!

Haggisfish · 13/05/2020 19:49

Smoked is high in salt, not fat, sorry.

Years ago I brought one of their chocolate brioche bread and butter puddings. It was ages and ages ago, they probably don’t do them now and it may have even been before the traffic light system made it painfully obvious when you are being ‘naughty’. I gleefully scoffed it all and then turned over the packet and was horrified to see that just half of it had 160% of my daily recommended fat in it!

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 19:51

Imagine if you were to add in a side of chips or something else, that would be an entire days allowance of salt. The daily guidelines for salt seem too high to me already.

Shouldn’t food standards be modified in light of the fact that we have enough to contend with in relation to our health without the shops adding to our problems by chucking all this shit into our food? Just a thought to add to your list Boris...

That pie looks amazing.

It’s not Uber healthy but it will not make you sick. Do you ever eat in restaurants and wonder why it’s nicer than at home? It’s cause it’s bloody full of salt and butter, way more than you would at home.

flamegame · 13/05/2020 19:54

Tbf I’d ages gone for the pizza meal deals in your shoes so...

Veterinari · 13/05/2020 19:54

There's probably just as much fat in a homemade steak pie. It's just that you don't have a convenient label pointing it out.

It's a couple of meals - you'll be fine Hmm

Blue5238 · 13/05/2020 19:55

I assume you don't eat out, and hardly eat bread? Just balance it out with plenty of steamed veg etc. It won't make you ill.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 13/05/2020 19:55

Fat isn't the enemy. If you consider your overall daily food/calorie intake it's fine, just have less salt and that at lunchtime.

The plus side is all that fat is very filling, you'll not want to snack afterwards!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/05/2020 19:55

@wellerhugs5 Grin low in sugar, so it's practically one of your 5 a day.

opticaldelusion · 13/05/2020 19:56

Mmm. I love salt.

Oh god, please no. The food police have ruined enough, previously delicious, foods by removing salt, sugar and fat from them. Let us have some pleasures left in life.

Heismyopendoor · 13/05/2020 19:57

For them to redo recipes it takes quite a lot, time and money. It’s not just chopping out the salt and ta da!

They are ready meals. Ready meals aren’t great for you. Surely we all know that?

Plus you have picked foods that are all quite luxurious and naturally fatty? All the puff pastry on the pie, cheese sauce in the lasagne, and so on. There are healthier meals out there if you take the time to look.

mouldysprouts · 13/05/2020 19:57

It clearly says all butter pastry though so it's about what I would think if I looked at it.

merryhouse · 13/05/2020 19:58

It will not make you sick, unless you're allergic to dairy. It won't make you ill either (at least not for another twenty years, and not by itself).

It's got protein. It's got carbohydrate. It's almost certainly utterly delicious (they're not going to make it taste hideously salty, are they? that would be sub-optimal for their profits). Shove some sliced carrots in a saucepan and microwave some frozen peas. Serve with orange juice.

Are you normally this neurotic over food?

DesmondTheMoonbear · 13/05/2020 19:58

And no, it won't make you sick, unless you have an allergy, intolerance or some other health condition where you have to closely monitor your carbs/sodium/fat intake.

Alsohuman · 13/05/2020 19:59

We’ve had that pie and it’s bloody lovely. It definitely didn’t make us ill. I might buy another one this week now I’ve been reminded of it.
