To be pissed off at people who constantly say we need to fly less?

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but here goes. Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed by the people who constantly say 'well, we need to fly less anyway'. Well, yes that's ok for you to say at 40/50 years old after you've spent the last 20 years flying all over the world and brandishing yourself as ' well travelled' and cultured. What about those of us in our early twenties like me who has been abroad four times in my whole life, not even to anywhere particularly exciting and I'm just about to finish university and was hoping to finally be able to travel a bit? It's ok to spout nonsense about flying less when you've been lucky and already had your experiences but I find it very hypocritical to want to deny others the same experiences that you were lucky enough to have.

GreenTulips · 10/05/2020 10:37

It’s not us denying you your freedom.

Flights will be more expensive and less of them, if these companies survive.

We’d love you to travel. But you need to accept it won’t be as far or a wide for a long time.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 10/05/2020 10:37

I'm 40, have flown once in my life. We do need to fly less, or we won't have a world to see anymore. Be annoyed if you like, but its true 🤷‍♀️

lockdowncockdown · 10/05/2020 10:38

I'm not just talking about because of the corona virus, I'm talking about those who say we need to fly less anyway because of climate change.

OP posts:
araiwa · 10/05/2020 10:38

I didnt realise it was 40/50 year olds saying it. More likely to be young people saying it

Plus you can get to loads of places without flying at all

lockdowncockdown · 10/05/2020 10:40

I have seen it a lot on mumsnet and mumsnet is not a predominately young demographic.

OP posts:
Porpoises · 10/05/2020 10:40

They're not saying it for no reason. The future is looking very bleak if we don't get climate change under control, and flying is an element of that.

As a younger person, sadly you're going to be even more impacted by the worst of climate change. Sad

ContessaferJones · 10/05/2020 10:40

You might be annoyed but they still have a point. You can still travel to other continents by train/ship, you know.

BigBairyHollocks · 10/05/2020 10:41

YABU, as much as it pains me to say it. I would love my children to be able to see the world, but the reality is what it is. Emissions must be lowered and unnecessary flying is something that needs to be reduced. And anyway as previous posters point out it’s going to be extremely expensive to fly anywhere after all this.

vanillandhoney · 10/05/2020 10:41

Flying abroad has only been possible for most people in the last forty years or so, though. It's not exactly something that's been going on for hundreds of years. It's a very modern thing to go travelling abroad every year.

That being said, you can still travel abroad, it's just things will be different now. Foreign holidays will be by train or ferry to Europe or people will still fly, just much less often.

It'll just be our new normal.

7Days · 10/05/2020 10:42

We do need to fly less.

Bad timing for certain individuals, but that doesn't make any difference to carbon levels .

Tuftytail · 10/05/2020 10:42

Flying is not the only way to travel. You can go overland and see way more. Trains are fantastic.

SistemaAddict · 10/05/2020 10:42

I'm 43 and have been on holiday abroad requiring a flight 6 times as a child and 7 times as an adult. I've not flown since 2007. My ex flew that many times a year. To some flying is as common place and regular as getting the train is for me (under normal circumstances). Business flights need to greatly reduce. They just aren't necessary when people can zoom or similar.

june2007 · 10/05/2020 10:42

YABU as a whole poeple should be flying less. It,ss not the poeple going on holiday once a year thats the prob. I

Frazzled2207 · 10/05/2020 10:43

Frankly, if the younger generation keep on destroying the planet in the way the older generations have done it will be a disaster for the planet. Flying is only one part of it though.
I see no problem at all with younger people taking a year out to travel the world. Flying off on city breaks several times a year “just because you can” will have to stop. The cost will eventually become prohibitive anyway, sadly.

Yes it is unfair but when you think about all of history the period of time when people have been able to fly willy nilly has been very very small. And clearly unsustainable.

Far more serious a problem IMO is cars. We have become so accustomed to all having cars that breaking that habit is going to be very difficult. Yes EVs can help to a point but that doesn’t stop congestion and big cities grounding to a halt at least twice a day.

LadyGrey66 · 10/05/2020 10:44

We do need to fly less because of climate change though? It’s not a personal slight on you, or an attempt to deny you your freedom. You can be annoyed as much as you want, but reducing unnecessary air travel is important. What you deem to be necessary is up to you.

ThePlantsitter · 10/05/2020 10:44

It's not that I think yabu. But we're all going to have to suck unpleasant realities up in the near future. And as far as air travel goes it is so nice not to have those bloody stinky, noisy jets overhead all the time at the moment I'd probably sacrifice overseas flights forever in order for it to continue.

Was just looking yesterday at round the world tickets on container ships you can get. You can travel. It might even be more interesting.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 10/05/2020 10:44

I'm 40, been abroad 3 times in my life and not for nearly 20 years.

Yabvu. Climate change is a huge issue and the fact is one of the biggest reasons for it is plane travel.

Stop being so entitled and try educating yourself in the facts

MrsBromeliad · 10/05/2020 10:45

I am 30 and haven't flown since I was 22. Only ever been on one holiday requiring flights since adulthood, then realised the environmental impact and stopped. It's not all older people.

The younger you are, the more climate change is going to impact your life. Someone who is fifty is only going to see the impact for another 30-50ish years, whereas if you're twenty, you might easily have another 80 years on this planet. Things will be very very different then.

Hypocrisy is annoying, I'll give you that. And it's not fair that older generations have benefited from things we now know we oughtn't. But please don't let perfection be the enemy of trying – no-one has a perfect carbon footprint but the more people who are making big efforts, absolutely the better.

Sorry you're feeling upset Flowers; I would dearly dearly love to have the chance to see so much of the world but when we know better, we should do better if we can!

sgampoiandtv · 10/05/2020 10:45

Agree op. Three kids is more carbon in the atmosphere then me with a holiday a year having more than 2 kids is more climate irresponsible than flying.

EmeraldShamrock · 10/05/2020 10:45

Yabu. We definitely need to fly less. It is not only directed at holiday makers but businesses.
Many people fly for work and business trips these will need to be reassessed most are unnecessary with the communication we can do online.
Changing how business is carried out will dramatically reduce flights.
Allowing the air space to be spread out.
Once or twice a year is fine, not once or twice a month. I haven't been on a plane in 5 years. My friend flys to Germany twice a month to do get job.

cosytoaster · 10/05/2020 10:46

We should fly less.

I'm mid 50s and have been abroad on a plane four times in my life. Stop tarring everyone with the same brush.

madroid · 10/05/2020 10:47

Don't be daft @lockdowncockdown

Just get a ferry to France then onwards by car, bike, walking, train, ship, roller skates etc whatever takes your fancy.

Just because you can't/shouldn't fly doesn't mean you can't travel.

Tatty101 · 10/05/2020 10:47

YABU - I'm also in my 20s. Why does your desire to travel trump people's literal safety?

We're seeing increasing numbers of natural disaster due to climate change. Your OP is very selfish.

lockdowncockdown · 10/05/2020 10:47

How am I being entitled to want to have the same opportunities that the older generation have had? Essentially the younger generation are paying for a mess we haven't even caused and then are being preached to about needing to fly less to 'save the planet'

OP posts:
Rayn · 10/05/2020 10:48

Swings and roundabouts. The young generation have a lot of things that older people didn't. Access to information at the touch of a button. Acceptance to be who you are gay, trans etc

Ok you may
be limited in the future on travel but have a lot of things older people didn't!
