Boris and a costa?

I am so confused now. What message is he giving? We're in Lockdown and he's having a costa. I had a close look at the picture and it doesn't look like one of those fill them up at home cups. I'm moving planets.

OP posts:

Costa isn’t only for the NHS. They advise it’s for “key workers” but this isn’t enforced.

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 20:10

and the tail backs caused such a problem that Costa

Pretty unlikely in Central London......

amicissimma · 09/05/2020 20:11

" it hasn't been made clear at all. "
"It's very confusing"
"he should be making clear rules and sticking to them."

Below is the law. Not some Mumsnetter's 'guidelines' but the actual law. I can't see how it could be clearer.

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020, Section 4:
Requirement to close premises and businesses during the emergency

4.—(1) A person responsible for carrying on a business which is listed in Part 1 of Schedule 2 must—

(a)during the emergency period—

(i)close any premises, or part of the premises, in which food or drink are sold for consumption on those premises, and

(ii)cease selling food or drink for consumption on its premises; or

(b)if the business sells food or drink for consumption off the premises, cease selling food or drink for consumption on its premises during the emergency period.
[My bold]

(SCHEDULE 2Businesses subject to restrictions or closure
PART 1

  1. Restaurants, including restaurants and dining rooms in hotels or members’ clubs.

2.—(1) Cafes, including workplace canteens (subject to sub-paragraph (2)), but not including—

(a)cafes or canteens at a hospital, care home or school;)

sonjadog · 09/05/2020 20:12

Surely Boris counts as a key worker?

mollibu · 09/05/2020 20:13

This has given me to much amusement this evening. Thank you very much for cheering me up, OP.

Have a coffee on me. Grin

Dozer · 09/05/2020 20:15

Envy of places where take out coffee is available.

PrimeroseHillAnnie · 09/05/2020 20:15

You’re getting your arse out coz the Prime Minister has coffee ?. I think we can allow him that , surely. I mean they were preparing to announce his death not long ago.

Phifedean123 · 09/05/2020 20:15

I'm no fan of Boris but good god get a grip. There's enough legitimate stuff to actually criticise him over, not for him having a coffee, which is allowed. Not like he's chugging a bottle of vodka in the park is it (although he probably feels like doing so)

WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth · 09/05/2020 20:16

I think you're right OP. He must be aware that he'd be photographed with it. I think his words are firmly saying one thing "stay home, saves lives, only go out when absolutely necessary" but his actions are saying we need to get the economy going, don't stop buying, start venturing out.

He's aware of his actions and how they'll be perceived and its intentional. Do as I do, not as I say.

SonjaMorgan · 09/05/2020 20:17

Presumably he is trying to balance the risks of ending lockdown with the risks of the economy imploding if the UK remains under house arrest. An unenviable decision. When do you think lockdown should end?

I think that the lockdown should be lifted. But Boris needs to be honest with people. Lots more people will die, but as long as hospitals remain at under capacity this is our reality now. We can't stay home until a vaccine is found as that maybe years away.

480Widdio · 09/05/2020 20:17

This is hilarious,he is doing nothing wrong!

@ThisHereMamaBear ,go and spend a bit of time Googling the rules. You are batshit barking mad if you think that Boris is in the wrong!

Permanantlypuzzled · 09/05/2020 20:17

Obviously he should be tarred, feathered , and paraded through the streets.

Kortnee · 09/05/2020 20:18

It's disgusting behaviour. I heard a rumour the other day that Matt Hancock had an ice-cream on his break and Kier Starmer bought a bag of humbugs from Esso to eat on the front bench. The whole country is going to shit.

Silvergreen · 09/05/2020 20:19

We've got a Costa in our hospital that's open 24/7. Even the sitting down bit is open.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 09/05/2020 20:20

It could be worse- he could have had a Starbucks cup Wink

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 20:21

but as long as hospitals remain at under capacity

I don't want to dampen the funny vibe on this thread, but I think your analysis is flawed. Hospitals operating under capacity is going to cause an increase in deaths from cancer. The NHS needs to resume as much of its previous functions as possible. Capacity is a meaningless goal if people are dying because they aren't getting the medical care they require.

Peggysgettingcrazy · 09/05/2020 20:21

I think his words are firmly saying one thing "stay home, saves lives, only go out when absolutely necessary" but his actions are saying we need to get the economy going, don't stop buying, start venturing out.

He was out for exercise and bought a take away coffee. Both entirely within the actual guidelines.

KimchiLaLa · 09/05/2020 20:23

It's obvious they're trying to inch people towards going out more and that's what the photo (clearly set up) was about. That's it. Who cares if he got a Costa - there are Costa's open in various guises, just not cafes.

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 20:23

Obviously he should be tarred, feathered , and paraded through the streets

He could sing No More Flippant Items to the tune of White Cliffs of Dover....

B0bbin · 09/05/2020 20:24

Are you really surprised? He is an absolute clown!

LilacTree1 · 09/05/2020 20:24

Excellent trolling OP. 👏

iklboo · 09/05/2020 20:25

I thought this was the new Netflix & chill when I saw the title.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 09/05/2020 20:25

Quite possible that he was walking to another meeting. Not sure what it's like right now but considering London traffic, it could be faster and greener to walk.

He's lost weight since being with Carrie and I suspect that some walking (exercise) is what the doctor ordered. Somebody mentioned a Costa at No 10/ Cabinet Office. Maybe he brought his drink from the meeting ?

Sandybval · 09/05/2020 20:25

I thought this was the new Netflix & chill when I saw the title.

Costa and kill evidently. Hmm

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 09/05/2020 20:26

Coffee is much more important than garden centre items and they reopen on Wednesday
