Fucking barbecues...

The weather is gorgeous where we are, it’s been beautiful all week, perfect for line drying washing... except it’s not. Every last bastard on our road has decided to have a barbecue, pretty much Midday straight through to the evening there’s a bbq going somewhere. It’s driving me mad having to tumble dry our washing in this weather! I thought we were in luck earlier and put out my sheets... I’ve just had to go out to retrieve them as there’s at least two bbqs on the go now and my sheets now honk

Does anyone else think bbqs are antisocial or is it just me?

OP posts:
changedmynameforlockdown · 09/05/2020 18:42

It seems universally agreed bonfires are antisocial. Charcoal barbecues are little different in my view. If it causes plumes of smoke, has people coughing and closing their windows, then your garden simply isn't suitable for a charcoal barbecue, stop being miserly and invest in a gas barbecue or go somewhere more suitable.

I'm not ashamed to hold a higher standard of consideration to my neighbours than the average Joe, and I know who I would prefer as my neighbour..

BossAssBitch · 09/05/2020 18:42

@DOINGOURBIT

What happened to manners? People telling - or in today's climate - posting a note through someone's letterbox to warn them of a barbecue - so neighbours could get washing in

Grin

My neighbours would think we had lost the plot if we did this

lovinglavidaloca · 09/05/2020 18:43

I’m so jealous we don’t have a bbq-ing garden

SpilltheTea · 09/05/2020 18:43

Put the washing out asap in the morning.

Allatsea34 · 09/05/2020 18:44

This thread has made me realise how good my neighbour is at bbqs! His bbq doesn’t smell smokey or like lighter fuel Grin he regularly uses it and has done for 6 years and we’ve never had a problem

Office9to5 · 09/05/2020 18:46

OP you are being Very unreasonable! Within the last few weeks on Mumsnet we've had people complaining about all kinds of normal garden activity - music being played, children playing outside all day, children with autism stimming outside, couples having noisy sex 4 doors down while the neighbours were trying to eat cream scones with tea and now barbecues! The list is endless - shall people just sit in straight jackets in silence in their gardens to prevent upsetting the neighbours? People are actually entitled to use their gardens believe it or not! OP you need to chill out seriously...

myrtleWilson · 09/05/2020 18:48

We had a bbq earlier - just a butterflied leg of lamb marinaded overnight in a Harissa based mix (fat trimmed of the lamb) - was delicious with homemade flatbreads, hummus, green chillis, Harissa spiced yoghurt, salad.

we also have a smoker and have been known to do a 12 hour brisket on that.

DH knows his stuff so we don't tend to overwhelm the neighbours who have bbq's anyway

0MrsT · 09/05/2020 18:48

Do people actually warn neighbours that they're having a bbq.. I find that bizzare.. I live on an estate and if it's a nice sunny day at the weekend I would just expect bbqs? I'd never think to tell my neighbours I was having one, and I'd think they were a little odd if they made a point of telling me... must admit I don't like it when the smell comes into my house.. but when I notice it I then close the windows.. they have as much right to cook their food outside on a bbq as I do to have my windows open.. I find it so sad that all people can do is moan about others doing something that makes them happy.. especially at a time like this!!

Boireannachlaidir · 09/05/2020 18:48

It's not the taste that is vile, it's the whole thing over here.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/05/2020 18:49

It's not the taste that is vile, it's the whole thing over here

But what do you actually mean? Why is ‘the whole thing’ vile? And why only ‘over here’? Confused

Toly · 09/05/2020 18:51

We’ve been having barbecues about 3 times a week lately. Love them! Your washing doesn’t trump anyone’s right to have a barbecue, you’re not the air police.

Koppa2Toppa · 09/05/2020 18:51

Yabvvvu, anyone who doesn't like bbq's aren't doing them right. Shouldn't be masses of smoke and It's not all about burgers and sausages.

We keep our windows/patio doors open when we bbq and have never noticed our neighbours shutting there's either when we have one, but then they all bbq too. My house doesn't get smoky/smelly 🤷‍♀️

I like hearing my neighbours enjoying themselves in their gardens, that includes low level music, children playing etc. Not much else going on at the moment so why shouldn't they make the most of the good weather.

Just put your washing out earlier, will dry in no time at the moment.

This was ours. Just the potatoes not done on it. Veg on the bbq is delicious and not a burnt/undercooked bit of food in sight.

I'm glad you and a couple of other people on this thread are not my neighbours. Such grumps and I think you're probably the anti social ones!

Fucking barbecues...
BorsetshireBlueBalls · 09/05/2020 18:51

Nope, not just you, OP. I don't like them - greasy smoke hanging over the neighbourhood, yuk. Agree with a PP that restricting the hours to evenings would work. I'd quite like to be able to work and sit in my garden on a sunny day without wafts of burning fat drifting around.

All that said, people are pretty restricted on what they can do right now, so c'est la vie. Have to live and let live. There's plenty of empty space to go and live in in Lincolnshire or the wilds of Dartmoor.

Excited101 · 09/05/2020 18:54

Just hang it up inside, that’s what those of us who live in flats have to do anyway, it’s absolutely fine.

hellosunshine5 · 09/05/2020 18:54

Does anyone else think bbqs are antisocial or is it just me?

Just you! What a miserable life you must live. There’s more to it than laundry you know...

Poor woman ☹️

yellowbrickwhorl · 09/05/2020 18:54

To be totally honest, on a lovely warm bank holiday Saturday, barbecues aren't exactly an unknown phenomenon.

KingJarvis · 09/05/2020 18:55

I’d hate to be as miserable as some of the posters on this thread.

DustyMaiden · 09/05/2020 18:55

Right now it smells like petrol, not very pleasant.

Nixen · 09/05/2020 18:56

We have SO LITTLE JOY right now and you want to take away bbqs so you can hang your sheets out? No. Hang your sheets out in the morning, doubt anyone is having a breakfast bbq

hillbilly · 09/05/2020 18:57

Can you put your washing last thing at night? In this weather it will be dry by morning 😀

ktp100 · 09/05/2020 18:57

I thought the advice was not to have them during lockdown due to affects on asthmatics and increasing their susceptibility to serious harm from CV, or something like that?

Anyway, I'm with you. I hate bbq's. My family love them so I'm being nagged to do one. I will be resisting for as long as is humanly possible Grin

ChilliCheese123 · 09/05/2020 18:58

Why don’t you just put your sheets out about 9am they’ll be done for 11am then bring them in?

mbosnz · 09/05/2020 19:00

Nah, I think you're anti-social.

Current advice in our borough is don't have bon-fires, due to so many nuck-fuckles being too dumb to do it safely, but bbq's are okay.

Sorry barby haters - sucks to be you I guess! Grin

Chocolatericecakes · 09/05/2020 19:04

I totally agree OP. If I don't get the washing out first thing in the morning I don't bother. I really don't mind the occasional bbq party but one set of neighbours barbecues three times a day. The firelighters they use create problems for my asthma so often don't get to use my garden at all, never mind the washing. It's been going on for years but seems worse now we can't escape. I'm seriously thinking about moving when lockdown is over.

I'm just leaving this here. She gets on to barbecues about halfway through I think 😂
