Fucking barbecues...

The weather is gorgeous where we are, it’s been beautiful all week, perfect for line drying washing... except it’s not. Every last bastard on our road has decided to have a barbecue, pretty much Midday straight through to the evening there’s a bbq going somewhere. It’s driving me mad having to tumble dry our washing in this weather! I thought we were in luck earlier and put out my sheets... I’ve just had to go out to retrieve them as there’s at least two bbqs on the go now and my sheets now honk

Does anyone else think bbqs are antisocial or is it just me?

I hate barbecues. So anti social. Why does one family's desire to have a barbecue trump the surrounding neighbours desire to enjoy their garden.

In the local park there is an area for barbecues, that is where people should have them. The smoky ones are the worst. I'm a keen gardener and I have planted scented plants, why is a smelly barbecue more important than me enjoying my garden?
I live in a normal residential street, metres away from neighbours. We don't barbecue, play music, shriek, have a trampoline - because we actually consider the impact our actions have on others..unlike the "you can do whatever you like in your own garden" brigade. Do what you like, provided you are not disturbing others..by noise, sight or smell..it's not complicated. Don't be anti social

This has got to be the most miserable thread I have read on here! There is loads of time to dry washing, life is too short to worry about things like that. Enjoy yourself!

I put our washing in the dryer so the kids can play in the garden as it would be in the way, or dry it early in the morning. Most washing would be dry in this weather before a BBQ starts.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/05/2020 18:17

changedmynameforlockdown why is your desire to smell your flowers more important than someone else’s desire to have a bbq?

ShakespearesSisters · 09/05/2020 18:18

We are about to get ours going. Its gas though so no smoke. However we are getting the firepit out as my DD's are doing a virtual camp and we will be making s'mores and having a sing. Things like that dont really impact, my neighbours do similar. However, the great big bonfire that caused a smog 150m away that a back neighbours (so never met) had last week was making everyone cough, splitter and have watery eyes. It's people like that that give everyone a bad name. He (I assume) has run out of stuff to burn now after daily fires for almost 3 weeks, all wet waste too or it wouldn't have smoked so much.

TinRoofRusty · 09/05/2020 18:18

FFS, unless people are BBQing 24/7 365 days a year the impact on you enjoying your garden is minimal. Hmm

Roussette · 09/05/2020 18:19

Yup, they are vile in the UK

Eh? Why? I barbecue in another country too and it's just as delicious as here. But I do it properly.

Do we have to live in Australia to have one?!

Teaformeplease · 09/05/2020 18:20

YANBU I hate them too. I have to close all the windows and we have to come inside. Gas BBQs are not too bad, I can just about stomach the smell of the meat cooking (vegetarian here) but the charcoal BBQs are awful - the smell of lighter fluid to get them started and then the clouds of smoke are awful. Neighbours a few doors away are always having noisy BBQs with family invited round even during the lockdown.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/05/2020 18:20

Pretty sure my bbq’s tasted the same when I lived in France, Spain and Italy as they do here.

Roussette · 09/05/2020 18:20

Lol I'd probably have to drive 150 miles to find a local park that allows barbecues. What nonsense

ChickenFight · 09/05/2020 18:23

It's bank holiday weekend and over 20 degrees. Of course people are having BBQs!

But then I don't think a single one of my neighbours (6 of us have back gardens in a rectangle) has a washing line.

TinRoofRusty · 09/05/2020 18:26

LOL, yeah, people are so going to pack up everything needed for a BBQ to go to a fucking park in case the neighbour wants to smell their flowers 😂😂😂. Parks are closed now, anyway.

TimeWastingButFun · 09/05/2020 18:27

I love the smell of a BBQ. They don't last long. YABVVU in this weather

NoWordForFluffy · 09/05/2020 18:28

hang your washing out overnight

what's the point of that? It won't dry...

Yes it will, if it's windy enough. We live on the coast and we often get the washing dry overnight.

If I ever get to the point where I see lovely weather and think 'ooo, I could wash the sheets' I know I'll have reached peak boring

I hit that point ages ago. Every soft furnishing in my house has been washed since lockdown started! BlushGrin

LakieLady · 09/05/2020 18:28

Some barbecues smell lovely, some smell a bit rancid and burnt fatty.

But the smell of barbecue lighting fluid is vile and triggers migraine for me (along with the smell of paraffin, some paints, and whatever they used to put in Formula One cars).

Mullikins · 09/05/2020 18:30

Use your tumble drier/airing rack/hang it over the radiators, you miserable so and so. There is very little to get excited about at the moment. A bbq is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

MaryBerrystolemyflour · 09/05/2020 18:30

” it's using a tumble dryer when the sun would dry the washing in a few hours that's a waste of energy! grin”

I wouldn’t know, my smart meter thingy is ignored in a drawer while the dryer is on and I enjoy a bit of bbq chicken from my chavvy sex pond! 😂

cardibach · 09/05/2020 18:31

It is complicated though, @changedmynameforlockdown
I’m not disturbed by a barbecue. Or by children playing. I’d be disturbed by loud rock sometimes, others I’d enjoy it. I don’t think I’ve a right not to be disturbed by sight of what my neighbours do in their garden. If they are hanging willies over the wall, it’s different.
You can’t definitively say what would disturb someone.

mummyshoes · 09/05/2020 18:32

Put it out before midday. Easy.

joystir59 · 09/05/2020 18:33

Hate BBQ

FromEden · 09/05/2020 18:33

Lol can you imagine the pearl clutching on here if people dared to have a BBQ in the park right now?

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkMaud · 09/05/2020 18:33

Only in MNland are barbecues so smelly that they taint the neighbours' washing. It's never happened to me in real life.

dementedma · 09/05/2020 18:35

Personally not a fan of barbecues. Far too much hassle and food is messy to eat. Round here it means a load of drunks shouting in the garden all night.
However, given the current situation, there isn’t much else people can do to amuse themselves so I suppose you will have to grin and bear it,

CigarsofthePharoahs · 09/05/2020 18:35

I'm also very annoyed by the sheer number of my neighbors who are busily BBQing away, pretty much every day. The smell, oh the smell! Reminding me that I can't join in as we don't have any BBQ briquettes and they're not exactly an essential item so getting some isn't happening.
I'd really love a slightly charred sausage right now.

bellabasset · 09/05/2020 18:36

I fancy a BBQ now, but as I'm on my own I don't bother.

Itwasntme1 · 09/05/2020 18:39

To be honest we are all spending too much time at home, everyone is in their gardens pissing each other off.

I am inside, had to come in because my neighbours are so bloody loud. They talk over the fence to each other all bloody day everyday. I can even hear every word inside.

And Christ they are boring. Even the sound of their boring, crappy, loud voices makes me want to scream.

They are of course entitled to talk (well it’s close to shouting) in their gardens. And they clearly can’t work from home so have a lot of time on their hands. But Christ I hate them😂.

This needs to end soon.
